Marvel Cinematic Universe Figure Discussion

Is that the Eternals' fault? I guess I'd have to go back and analyze whether or not we stopped having completed MCU teams after that wave but in any case I'm glad to have all of them in my display.

I'm STILL shocked at how bad both the Eternals movie did and how badly the toys sold. At the time that wave came out, I thought that it was one of the best that Hasbro had ever done - and I'm not even really an MCU collector. I even double and tripled down when I started finding them for $5-$6 each. I enjoyed the movie as well and am disappointed that the characters aren't likely to appear much again.

To my recollection it was the last time they went All In. I'm not a full MCU toy guy, someone can educate me.

I think you're right... No Way Home was in stages. MOM they skipped the multiverse illuminati, L&T they did quite a bit but not everyone, Wakanda Forever they did quite a few, and had the best of wave before it. Plus it came out a year after Eternals and the toys were already happening when Eternals was released. Quantumania they didn't do everyone but no one minded, GOTG 3 they left out a bunch, Marvels did just the title characters, as did DP&W, and Brave New World did the main characters. Now FF did most of the characters.

Definitely lower production numbers and very selective character choice. Eternals definitely represented a turning point in how MCU figures are released. I can't think of a harder peg warmer collection than that series.

I was only personally interested in the Shalla-Bal Surfer and Flamed On Johnny. I pre-ordered those from Amazon and had them in hand on June 28th but I've not yet ever seen any of the wave at retail at any time during the movie's theatrical run. That's just beyond odd. It's almost like both Disney AND Hasbro knew the movie was going to flop from the get-go, or at least had little to no confidence in sales.

In fairness, the last comic Fantatic Four wave bombed hard also. I remember picking up cases of that entire retro card wave for under $50. I've since sold most of the Ben, Johnny and Reed online but I may never sell through on High Evolutionary, Psycho-Man and Sue.

Eternals is certainly the king of clearance peg-warming, but other waves since have done about the same. Multiverse of Madness and the comic Bonebreaker wave can still be found for single dollar prices today. The Avengers anniversary wave in the white packaging did so bad that the Hasbro Marvel team doesn't even want to do Avengers figures anymore. That's kind of crazy to think about. I feel like all of the Disney+ waves seemed to have performed really badly as well. My Gamestop STILL has Agatha figures!

Probably fair to say that Legends experienced incredible success during the height of the MCU, across all lines... and given the lackluster performance of the films lately... numbers are way down. The whole release model is being re-examined. It would also not be a surprise that sales have slowed so dramatically in parallel to the current MCU that it led to Ryan being let go. The movies aren't his fault, obviously - but I'm sure they needed someone to blame for the lack of fever in the toy isles.

I really wonder what the next Avengers movies will do for the brand. The success of those is probably leading many sleepless nights for the Marvel people.

If the 2 upcoming Avengers movie don't make a substantial profit then that might be it for a while until Disney can figure out a different way to profit off the IP. They're having the same struggle with Star Wars and others. It's been a lackluster run recently. The X-Men relaunch might give them a golden opportunity - but are non core audiences going to be interested in a reboot of that franchise after so many still relatively recent Fox films? I don't necessarily think that Deadpool & Wolverine should be taken as a statement that they will. Regardless, I badly want Disney and the MCU to re-find their mojo!

The MCU thriving definitely helps move all types of merchandise. But next year is Spider-Man and Avengers. If Marvel can nail these, they may win back some of that goodwill. Those are the big money makers.

I'm not an MCU collector because I only have so much shelf space, even with 3/5ths of my basement finished just for my collection. Having said that, the figures, for the most part, are amazingly well done. But the movies aren't dominating like they used to, and that is reflected in the lack of MCU Legends sales imo. That's gotta be disheartening for the sculpters of the MCU line.
