Do You Still Actively Read Comics?

I’ve always wondered how many Marvel Legends collectors still actively read comics. By that, I mean that you still maintain a pull list at your local comic store or whatever the contemporary (digital) equivalent is.

I haven’t had a pull list since 2002. I do maintain a Marvel Unlimited subscription, but that’s mainly for either reading Silver and Bronze Age books or learning about characters that pop up in Marvel Legends that I’m not familiar with but pique my interest. In general, I have no clue when it comes to comics published in the last 20+ years.

What about everyone else? Are you pretty much up to date with the comics, or are you just in it for the figures these days?

I read when the mood strikes. Sometimes it’s a bit of a push/ pull kind of arrangement and I have to talk myself into doing it because I still find them entertaining, but my attention span can be all over the place these days. Novels are easier for me to read because I find that if I have the physical book with me and the unabridged audio version as well, I can read without distraction and the audio is enough to keep me focused on the story. The only other downside to reading comics is that I prefer to read omnibus volumes now because I am a bit of a one and done kind of completist, and I like the idea of budgeting myself to a few omnibus volumes a year because they are cheaper on the whole than reading buying up a dozen or more trades to complete the same story.

I haven't had a pull list since the early 90's. As for Marvel Legends, I'm mostly in it for classic versions of characters I love. Once and awhile I pick up a current issue or get a limited series, but I don't really collect or follow comics anymore. When I do get a current issue, I'm really disappointed in the art these days. Frankly, most of it isn't very good :(

I use Marvel Unlimited to read current books. It actually makes me sort of feel guilty since I haven’t bought a comic book from my LCS in a decade and that’s kind of their bread and butter. I do still rack up a lot of random toy and hardcover buys there though.

I still like a book in hand and not buying single issues made it so I have enough for a nice Marvel Omnibus collection these days.

I maintain my pull list, but it isn't a particularly long list of titles right now.

I haven't had a pull list since the early 2000s. There were some cascading crossover events that left me overwhelmed, underwhelmed, and pretty disinterested.

I go back to trade paperbacks all the time. And sometimes I will dig out some of my favorite issues and enjoy those stories, but newer Marvel stuff just doesn't have much pull for me.

My 13 year-old son gets the most use out of the Marvel Unlimited subscription.

Never had a pull list, personally, but if there's a story arc I'm interested in or variant cover I like, I'm more than happy to go get the individual comics on release date. Certain factors like my LCS changing their on-shelf date, late arrivals, and consistent delays (finishing Batman 89 Echoes took foreverrrrr) means sometimes I'll forget about something or it'll slip past, and I just wait to pick up the trade paperback, but I do generally try to stay up to date. Even if I can't read the stories themselves, I'll at least read a synopsis when all is said and done so I'm up to date on things.

I have a pull list but its for tpbs not single issues. I buy them like, every 6 months or so maybe? Its alot cheaper. But I don't have myself down for Marvel anymore. I get Red Sonja and Power Rangers when they come out. And I have most of the Sonja Omnibi, still missing the 2 queen Sonjas and the Black White Red hardcovers. Used to get Batman, The adventure continues, but that run ended. I've only bought a small amount of Marvel over the last... oof I unno. A while. I bought predator vs wolverine. That's the last one I remember. May get predator and black panther and/or Spiderman too. But if I don't it won't bother me. Alot of comics I notice from Marvel dont interest me anymore. They went way too... out of character? For some of my favorites and the stories seem mediocre. I was debating on getting the X Force runs with all the black and silver suits, mainly cause of Psylocke, Laura and Wolverine, but its not a priority.

I've been reading comics for going on 61 years now.

Comics have changed a LOT over the decades, but ya know what? So have I. Life is change and change is making adjustments and getting used to whatever the new status quo is.

I'll keep doing this until the day I die.

I no longer read monthly comics, nor have I since at least 2010. I do, however, get trade paperback collections. Primarily, Epic Collections of runs I like or haven’t read and always wanted to.

The only currently-ongoing series I’ve continued to follow in trades is Thor.

The only floppies I collect are Indie projects from friends of mine, usually bought through Kickstarter.

Still? I have only intermittently read comics. I have always been into the figures themselves more. It’s why I don’t feel too much pressure to adhere to “comic accuracy” or canon. Comics are fun, but as a kid I would have the most fun setting up battles and stories in my head with my toys, loosely inspired by the books or shows or whatever. I try to recapture that on my shelves and photography by creating interesting scenes or displays.

I only ever had a pull list briefly in high school and haven't in the 25-ish years since. I've been trades or graphic novels only since the early 2000's with the only exceptions being some single issues from people I know in real life and who I want to support. I don't collect titles just because I'm a fan of the brand, it's got to be a creator or story I'm particularly interested in. I keep tabs on the stuff going on because, I don't really know why, habit maybe.

The last big chunk of Marvel I read was House of/Powers of X Krakoa stuff. And I did like that, since my institutional fondness for the characters helped make up for some of the things I'm not as fond of in Hickman's writing (Hickman's not bad, but I think he's better at big ideas than character).

Lately I've been collecting and reading a lot of old stuff. Classic runs I never had and only ever got snippets of when I was young. Not surprisingly, much of it is 80's X-Men and Walt Simonson Thor. I think I'd like to start collecting comics a bit more seriously again, long live physical media, but I am very picky these days.

Yes, but I tend to stick to only 2-3 ongoing series at a time. Right now I'm reading Spawn Scorched and DC vs Vampires. No Marvel titles right now. I pick up trades here and there when they're heavily discounted (70% off is usually my sweet spot where I bite).

At $4.99 and up for a monthly title, I can't afford more than that. Figures have become my favorite part of the hobby.

Yep.

There's so much I want to consume from all the major publishers, and I keep losing ground. I used to keep a pull list, but these days I just Sail the High Seas and buy omnis and hardcovers.

I do think mainstream Marvel and DC are uninteresting at the moment. I keep up to date on X-Men books and cherry pick Marvel books following creators or neat ideas. The Ultimate books were very good. DC I'm mostly pivoted to Absolute at the moment.

Most of my stack is indie comics and non-superhero.

I try to read older Marvel and DC books that were before my time,.as well. And I always get stuck rereading old favourites.
