Mattel DC Figures

The more I think about this, the more sense it makes. It's the perfect Batman to kick off Mattel's line.

Yeah, while I selfishly want it (and will happily take Todd's) to me it's just an easy pick.

It's a simple classic looking Batman. I don't want to hear nitpicking pushback on that, it's got a basic ass logo, trunks, no piping, it's even blue and grey and he runs around in daylight. It's an update and still what everyone claims to love.

It's new. It's modern. The new book is cool. It's just a nice innocuous design that's timeless and toyetic, and it would just be early waves, so I'm sure we'll get Knightfall and Neal Adams and whatever. But if I was launching the line, this is my Batman. And then Absolute and a DC Classic Look follows immediately after

And if he does, it's doing to be the 20th Batman released on the Knightfall or Hush bodies, so nothing special.

I don't see Absolute being a huge mine of toys for the mass market Mattel line, there's just too many weird or gross designs outside of the Trinity.

Doesn't need to be a huge mine, we get one off and period specific looks all the time across every superhero toy line.

Batman and Wonder Woman print money whether you're reading it or not. Superman can go kick rocks, though. If we get a Flash I'll be happy, if we don't, I got other toys to buy.

Those are all valid points but I think the suit is still too recent when compared to the lead time it takes for Mattel to make a toy. First there’s character selection, then comes the approval process. Then the toys are prototyped, put into production and hopefully released within the calendar year. That’s like a full 2-2 1/2 year long process. This costume only debuted like 7 month ago. So there is no way that Mattel has one just ready to go in time for this summer let alone NYTF.

Unless it’s a digital prototype which is typically not their strategy. They still like to show off physical products at toy shows. They may be able to show us something ahead of SDCC or Power Con of a quick digital prototype courtesy of Entertainment Weekly or Comicbook.com or any other magazine or pop culture related resource. But I think you’re probably praying for a miracle that’s not going to happen this quickly. It may be winter 2027 before a figure of the Dan Mora/Joe Kelly batsuit is unveiled and solicited by Mattel

I just don't know how true that is anymore of action figure production, how much DC has worked with Mattel already, what Mattel's pitch was, and how basic and generic a suit it is in the first place.

Logo aside, there's not a thing there you wouldn't already be making for any number of Batman.

But I'm not putting money down or anything, it's all Tinkerbell butt dust and orphan tears until they show us something.

My understanding is we won't see the line we actually care about until 2027?

That’s all fair. I realize that this suit is pretty barebones and is easy enough for Mattel to make. But it still has to go through the approval process and the appropriate channels. Royalties are involved for the designers of this suit too so you can’t just leave everyone in the lurch for the sake of bum rushing a particular costume in time for wave one of a relaunch and then apologize to all parties who weren’t informed until after the announcement. Not a good first impression for a partnership. Especially if it’s the second time around and Netflix/Warner Bros/DC is expecting more decorum on behalf of Mattel

Mattel could have received advanced art when they agreed to the deal too. In fact, I would assume they did as DC would probably have a few ideas and would know roughly what they'd be doing come the window these will be released in arrives. Mattel, as far as I know, still owns their own factories too so their turn-around is probably not as long as it is with other companies.

Mattel's got their wrestling figures down to less than a year from gear debut to figure release. This is a new line, so lead times are probably going to be longer when you account for a lot of new tooling and all the initial decisions made regarding line format, but if the new costume's already been approved by DC for a reasonable length of time, I don't think it's impossible that it could show up early.

Like I said, the new Batsuit debuted about 7 months ago. Right about the time that Hush 2 wrapped up and the new Deadpool vs Batman book was solicited. And Mattel announced their takeover bid last June. Which means that they probably initially sat down and discussed their new partnership maybe about exactly one year ago and then spent a couple of months informing their factories, other license holders, parent companies (which changed hands again just a month ago) and shareholders that they were making the switch. All of that probably took 4-5 months to arrange so by late may they were ready to make the announcement and by June they dropped their bombshell. So there is a chance that the new costume was talked about in that window but I would hazard a guess that most of that time was devoted to more pressing priorities and preparations
