Third Party Figures

Damn, some nice croc dudes coming down the line:

I know that I don't *need* this Sobek fella but he's calling my name and I can't stop hovering over the preorder button.

I was mistaken. He hates them.
The one on the left has elements of Hollow Knight, which my nephew is super into. I suppose this is an intentional visual reference, but it strays far enough from the character design that I can see many Hollow Knight fans passing it by.

Then there's always the question for action figures related to popular card and video games, "would a video game enthusiast rather buy an action figure based on their favorite game or another video game?" This always comes up when Magic the Gathering figures are made and I (unfortunately) think that MTG fans in my circle of family and friends would much rather buy more MTG cards than action figures based on cool character designs from those cards.

Even in my D&D and magic circle, they would rather 3D print little models to assemble and paint at this point.

To be fair, my son IS an action figure collector and he still thinks those figures suck.

Genuine third party question.

There's a lot of third-party Dragon Ball. There's also no shortage of sexy women. Certainly, there's no shortage of knockoffs of a lot of licensed things.

Why is there no Sailor Moon? I could also list a bunch of other '90s anime I want but like specifically, it occurs to me that it's strange we don't have unofficial Sailor Scouts from any of these sources.

so is Hornet on a knock off SexyIce Vermin body or is this one of those times where a Chinese company puts on a little hat and fake mustache to make unlicensed figures? (“LingJiHun?! I don’t know who you’re talking about! My name is Mety Toys!”)

Because that’s my problem with the figure… if it’s SexyIce why does it cost a quarter of their figures usual price?! I’m just worried QC isn’t gonna be there for such a thin figure, especially if it’s not SexyIce and some other company just tried to dupe the body on a budget…

Holy shit, I would buy the crap out of a set of the inner scouts on that new Rage Toys body. Something a little larger and more fun to pose than the figurarts, that would be amazing!

I’d put them with my NECA Gargoyles. There’s a lot to be said about Mummies Alive and Gargoyles being a shared universe, but I think DIC’s dub of Sailor Moon (Serena, not Usagi) fits in there too… can’t you just see the Moon Empire and Ancient Egyptians having a cultural exchange?! The Egyptians taught the Moon how to build great stone monuments and the Moon taught them the secrets behind pretty guardian transformations! … anyway, 5k, Rage Toys Sailor Moon and Mummies Alive! Now! Chop Chop! Don’t think I forgot about that Ja’kal render you showed off! NOW!

The simple answer is that Chinese companies, licensed and unlicensed, just does whatever interests them on a whim. They'll make a million Dragon Ball and Shonen Jump figures because those characters don't exist yet or suck if they do, they made a random Capcom character just because he has the likeness of an actor popular over there, they'll make Old Master Q, etc. Even the licensed releases, Yolopark and Storm are pretty much just making SNK and Tatsunoko (namely Shurato) figures en masse because China loves that stuff.

All of the Sailor Scouts' figures are pretty readily accessible and CHEAP, especially so in China, so they just don't have a demand for it. That said, I'd kill for figures of the Shittenou. Those guys were always my favorites, ever since I was a kid.

Out of curiosity, what would the rest of your '90s anime (or really, any other old ass anime) wishlist look like?

Yeah, I'm Color Arts complete with Figuarts (and just POed the new one). Friend of mine heard I used to watch the show back in the day and gifted me everything, I triggered a secret hyperfixation they wanted to share. But as I'm going deeper into third party and gooner figures (the shame), just occurred to me that it's weird the options are so few.

Your China point makes sense. I wonder if I can dig deeper and find goods to fudge what I can.

Had a lot of my anime from the back of the rental shop (they kept it by the curtained porn section at one place), so I was never sure if we were supposed to be looking at it when my friend's mom took us to the video store.

Watched a lot of it through one friend who was super clued in because his dad was prototype weeb. And then when I was a skater, one of my top brands was Hook Ups which copied so much of that art, and I had like every possible t-shirt, many of which got me in trouble in high school.
