Playmates Vintage Rereleases

He was always one of my favorites. I've got a vintage one, complete so I'd probably pass on a re-release (just trying to patch holes in my collection). I'd LOVE if Neca did him in the '87 cartoon style for that line though. I also would have loved for Super 7 to do an updated version in their Ultimates line before they stopped being able to do that.

What do you mean by stopped being able to do that for Super 7?

And yeah, I would love NECA to do more of the later figures that never showed up in the cartoon. They just did it with Wyrm.

Playmates got testy with Super 7 for basically ripping off their old designs and just adding articulation and I guess they complained to Viacom about it. It's why Rat King was originally "Sexy Rat King" when solicited but people complained so much that Flynn went back to Viacom with his fan complaints and was able to do something closer to the original but still not quite the original. Then they started pivoting to weird stuff like the Mirage Casey and the like and now 2003 Turtles.

I'm sure someone might correct me on some of that, I'm just going by my vague memories of what I have read about it.

Oh, I didn’t realize that Super 7 was done being able to do updates of the original Playmates. It does look like they got to most of the original few years of the ‘80s line, though.

Kind of hoping the figures go on deep discount somewhere so I can build a collection.

I love mine but with the prices Super 7 is probably going to I'm kind of glad they aren't making too much else I'm interested in.

I'm honestly glad Super7 is likely done with the Playmate toys vintage Ultimate's as well. I still need to get Rat King, but I have all the others based on the vintage Playmates line. The only major character I wish they had made for TMNT Ultimate's is General Traag. I just feel like he is a well-known, iconic figure and important character. But it's no big deal.

But I'm excited for when Playmates releases Antrax, Scale Tail, Chrome Dome, and Wyrm. They are also doing the Mutant Modular and Foot Cruiser along with the Sewer Layer. I wish they'd re-release Kraang's Android Body. And I mean the big deluxe version.

Super7 hasn't confirmed anything, but then again, I don't think tomorrow is exactly promised to them at this point. The assumption going around though is if a character or accessory only existed in the toyline (or perhaps because of) then it's Playmate's and Super7 can't do it. If the design appears elsewhere (the rock n' roll turtles are a good example as they appeared on some licensed products back in the day) then it's fair game, but Super7 can't copy the accessories directly. For Rat King, one can notice they were able to basically recreate the sculpt of the toy because of some exceptional circumstances, but none of the old accessories were recreated. Even the dead cat belt had to be changed to a bandolier. And also hurting them is the fact that NECA gets to do the cartoon stuff so that might close that out, though I don't think it's actually written into a license agreement or anything (from a legal standpoint, it sounds like both NECA and Super7 have essentially the same deal), but if Super7 starts doing characters from the cartoon then NECA might start complaining and I would guess Viacom is getting more money out of NECA than Super7 so they're likely to get their way. I would also guess that a lot of these vintage reissues from Playmates stem from their conversations about Super7 and strengthen their argument. At any rate, if the 2k3 stuff is selling as well as Super7 claims then I wouldn't be surprised if the vintage inspired line is dead which is going to really tick me off since they have yet to do Heavy Metal Raph.

This seems like the most appropriate thread for this. Pixel Dan's TMNT book is done and going up for preorder soon. It's going to span two volumes, but it looks like volume 1 is going to cover the bulk of the vintage line:

I never got his MOTU book as I'm just not much of a fan of that franchise, but I look forward to checking this one out.

Thats cool. I may have to pre order that. Loving both MOTU and TMNT, and having Dan's MOTU book, might as well grab this too. Volume One definitely covers the years/era that is most important to me.

Hey, has anyone heard anything about when the Vintage Sewer Lair Playset will be going up on Amazon? I really want to get one or two of those.

I got an ad for the Sewer Lair on Mercoid (UK retailer) saying it was shipping in December and was $170 USD. It had these stock pictures with it.

I’m in the US but have ordered from them before.

I always thought it was so weird that the Technodrome just connects to the Sewer Lair like that. Krang flushes his toilet and it runs right into the Turtles living room.

$170 is a Jem and the Holograms price to be sure. I think I will wait for Amazon to get it since its exclusive to them here in the US. Because I think the Sewer Lair should be the same price or less than the Technodrome on there. Maybe around SDCC it will finally go up for pre order on Amazon.

I really appreciate the info though gpmartin414 :) It's good to know of another place and option to be able to get it.

This retailer way overcharges. I bet it’ll be $99, though.

I’m pumped for it. I have a vivid memory of begging my mom for the original in like 1989. I don’t think I had ever wanted something that much. I did end up getting and played the hell out of it.

Never got a Technodrome as a kid, though! I did buy the new one from Amazon, but am waiting to put it together to have with this sewer lair. The new version looks too small connected to the sewer lair.
