PLAYMATES Mutant Mayhem/Tales of the TMNT/etc.

I think so? I'm not as plugged into it. There were a couple of characters (like Ray) that were in shorter supply when the movie came out, but they all seem to have been refreshed. The section seems to have decent upkeep around me with stuff coming and going.

obviously have no sources, but that would be pretty wild. I can definitely see Playmates trying to exert more control over the license given how TMNT is seemingly available to everyone - why pay the big bucks for a "master" license with very little in the way of exclusivity?
Given that it appears Playmates was able to basically stop Super7 from doing the vintage toy upgrades just by sitting down and having a little tantrum suggests Playmates was already asserting quite a lot more control over the license than most licensors would ever allow anyway.

I don't know about that. I think there's a reason why we don't have X-Men or Batman figures from other companies in the collector section at Target like we do TMNT. And I think they got their way with Super7 eventually because the returns probably weren't great after a few years for Paramount. It certainly took them awhile to finally get there.

Every license is different. And not to 'well acksually' you, but X-Men were simultaneously being made by Hasbro as general retail, and DST as collector-oriented. Not very different at all from the TMNT break-down. Likewise, McFarlane was/is making collector retail action figures of Batman at the exact same time as Spinmaster is making kids' action figures of Batman one four-foot section over.

Why Playmates got their way with Super7 probably has more to do with them being technically legally correct in a specific case (their ownership or specific design elements) and it not being worth it to Viacom to fight it out when they can just direct the licensor to do something different and still get their money. It doesn't matter to the license holder what we want, after all. It only matters that all contracted licensees are out there making product.

On the other side of it, it definitely seems like Hasbro - Star Wars and Mattel -WWE are TRUE master toy licenses because it doesn't appear ANYONE else is allowed to play in those sandboxes at all (within the action figure realm).

There's some talk about this on the Party Wagon podcast. Gary (the host) is one of the owners of Bull Air who has dealt with Paramount and is very friendly with people at NECA and has other contacts in the industry has some interesting stuff to share. Nothing earth-shattering and I think it's what most would assume (Skydance is increasing licensing across the board), but something to have on in the background. Doesn't sound like he's too concerned about what this means for NECA so if you want to assume that's the vibe he's getting from them you're free to do so.

When they talked about the Playmates situation on Toy Anxiety last night, Blake from Toycollectr was chiming off in the comments. He made it sound like there was already a done deal on who got the rights from Playmates. I don't know if that conflicts with what's being said here or not. I wouldn't' be surprised if things are still shifting around.

That’s interesting. It only conflicts with what Gary was speculating, which he noted he had no inside info on, which is that he felt Playmates wanted the news out there in hopes that it would lure Skydance back to the negotiating table. I definitely trust Blake’s word as he tends to have good sources and I’ve been waiting for him to pop-up on one of these shows to talk about it.

Interesting times. Toy Fair is now a month and 14 days away. Guess we shall find out more then, or early summer at latest.

I wouldn't mind Mattel or Hasbro getting it. If they treat it with respect.

My fear is a Spinmaster or Jakks getting it.

But again, the big question/answer here is NECA.

While Playmates may be done with TMNT on December 31, 2026, in the meantime it seems they are doing TMNT X GI Joe Crossover figures. Have you guys seen these?

Have a look.

I kinda love that Shredder/CoCo mash up. The rest, I donno. I think Bebop and Rocksteady as Dreadnoks makes sense. Krang as the arms dealer makes sense. Joes with turtle proportions just seems silly. But Mike as Shipwreck and Pigeon Pete as Polly is hilarious.

I can't believe they're getting vehicles! I wonder what scale this line will be. Typical TMNT scale?

I don’t know enough about GI Joe to know who Donnie is.

It’s also unfortunate Ninja Turtles doesn’t have a high enough ranking evil lady for Baroness to get a counter part (but if I’m not mistaken, Evil-Lyn didn’t get a Turtles of Greyskull figure either so, might just be how it is)

Also too bad April is Scarlet, I was hoping for Covergirl (Classified red head Cover Girl is the only Classified I own aside for a Snakeeyes I threw away to get the wolf, she lives on my Turts shelf as “embedded war reporter April”) but that’s just my taste…

Only one of these I’d consider getting is Destro Krang, because that’s a cool look for Krang (but again, not a GI Joe guy…)

If true, I find it amusing that Playmates had to remove the tooled gun accessories from the mutant military reissues, but are now doing a G.I. Joe mash-up. Some of those mock-ups look so bad though that I wouldn't be shocked if it's fake, but it could also be cheaply produced mock-ups just to sell the licensor on the idea. Either way, no interest from me.

According to Blake at Toy Collector magazine, Mattel is the one (per Dan Larson). 1:04:00 mark:
