Articulated Thoughts General Movie and Series News & Discussion

I like the Odyssey a lot. But as of right now, the only half-decent adaptation of it I've ever seen was the one with Armand Assante as Odysseus.
I would recommend Hector Berlioz's epic opera Les Troyans, which is based more on Virgil's Aeneid, but suspect that would be a waste of time...

It was! I watched it when it originally aired!
Assante has such a great screen presence. I still remember the speech at the end after he reveals himself as Odysseus to the suitors. "Your crime is that you tried to steal my world, the world I built with my hands..." So good.

Heh, even when it said "THIS SUMMER", I could barely see it.
RIGHT?!

True story - I watched that on YouTube a few years ago (3... 4?). It's... wild. I remember it made me think about that Odyssey space cartoon.. Ulysses 21 or something? But yeah, the Aeneid is definitely worse than The Iliad and the Odyssey in every way and is just Roman propaganda. But still fun.

You must have watched this version (
) which is highly modernized and definitely idiosyncratic in its staging.

No easy way to see a more traditional staging for free, but this version conducted by Gardiner (a Berlioz expert) - if you can find it - is probably the best (https://www.amazon.com/Berlioz-Troyens-Blu-ray-Susan-Graham/) as is this version from the Metropolitan Opera in NYC from 2013 conducted by Levine (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2661764/) - the Met's 1970's staging probably is sung better, but the modern video, design and sound is better. But of course none of them are going to be especially accurate in terms of attire or anything like accuracy.

I am a bit of Berlioz geek, hence more than you need to know....

That is the one I watched! I'll have to look into seeing another version if I can.

What's the humanoid vertebrae on the back of the helmet thing about? That the historical equivalent of a Greek scrunchie?

Remember how Bane broke Batman's back? Can't happen to GREEK BATMAN because he has a -bronze- spine. Instant visual cue for the audience that this Batman is 800% tougher and 12%, at least, less breakable than regular Batman.

To be fair, dressing in an ostentatious Batman costume does seem like an Agamemnon move. Make that Curse of Atreus work for ya, buddy. I’m sure your daughter misses you a lot.

I saw both avatar movies in theatres and I... I don't know if I enjoyed them. It was a lot like watching a videogame let's play (which I do not vibe with), but least I had popcorn. I don't think I'd be invested in this third one, but I do want an excuse to eat buttered popcorn.

Then I think I should see the third one just because I already have? I really just want to go to the movies before Christmas. It's Avatar or SpongeBob at this point.

I'm only interested in Avatar movies for the technical advancements, but I'm REALLY into the technical advancements.

Still, I couldn't make it all the way through the water one. I'll just wait for some online VFX breakdowns or something.

I enjoyed Avatar 3, personally. It felt like something actually happened this time, versus in 2, when it was just kind of an effects reel. In fact, one could argue too much happened in 3, but I still found myself enjoying it. Some good character moments for sure.

I've heard surprisingly good things about the Spongebob movie, but I think it's been ruined for me in advance by that damn Ice Spice song. The fact that they had the cast, including Mark Hamill, say even a word or two of the song for a promo video just feels wrong to me. Ice Spice is the equivalent of giving a Kindergartener a rap career; all the even semi-decent writers of history are rolling in their graves. Only thing I like her for is that she makes me feel better about my writing. 😅

I can't give Assante's version full marks just because it's a product of its time, with the budget appropriate to a TV mini-series/movie. I will always give it that the material culture mostly looks better than anything Hollywood is probably ever going to do in my lifetime.
