Tracking toy tariffs

I think the UK accounts for something like 3% of our trade? It's a nothing deal they want to sell as some sort of victory.

BBTS charged me for a bunch of items today -- ML X-Force X-23/Warpath pack, X-Force Archangel, and some Funko Batman: The Animated Series Pops -- and there wasn't any indication of a tariff charge. They're still in my pile of loot, so not sure if that charge would be added. then.

Had Target cancel a long-standing Star Wars preorder and now I'm wondering if and when preorders will start dropping. I don't want to be paranoid but I wonder if we'll start seeing bigger chains who can eat the customer rage dropping and relisting. I've got two or three orders on Target and maybe a half-dozen spread out between now and the end of the year on Amazon about half of which I'd be really annoyed if they got canceled, mostly Classified stuff.

Per the BBTS FAQ, items in POL will not be affected:

Q: If I have already paid for an item in my Pile of Loot, will I be charged an additional tariff?

A: No, we will never add an additional tariff surcharge to an item you have already paid for. When shipping items from the Pile of Loot, the standard shipping and sales tax (if applicable) will be collected at the time a shipment is created.

Also, just to note, BBTS just e-mailed me that all my "locked-in" Hasbro preorders won't have a tariff charge. Which was just She-Hulk lol.

Hasbro must be eating that charge then. I wonder if that also means Hasbro ships to BBTS as opposed to BBTS taking ownership in China. For companies like EE and BBTS that do that sort of thing, the entire burden of the tariff falls on them since they're essentially the one importing product.

Here's the email in full, if it helps:

Thank you for pre-ordering HASBRO Marvel Legends, Transformers, Star Wars, or G.I. Joe! We are excited to let you know that the prices of your pre-orders placed prior to 5/9 are locked-in to the price on your order. This means that for these items there will not be any tariff surcharge added to the price on your order. We are very happy that our continuing tariff efforts with HASBRO has allowed us to provide this assurance today.

Any pre-orders placed from 5/9 onwards may be subject to additional tariff surcharges. Please refer to the product listing on our website for details.

Hasbro imports everything and pays the tariffs. Hasbro packs cargo containers as full as they can get them, and they split up the product off the container and ship to retailers from the dock warehouse.

There's not a separate cargo container for each retailer. Rarely would a retailer place an order that fits neatly into even numbers of cargo containers, so Hasbro maintains possession all the way to the US port they arrive in. The end retailer also doesn't know the declared value of any given product as
well as Hasbro would to assess the tariff and pay for insurance. I saw a manufacturer recently comment that they were hoping their container ship sank instead of arriving because they'd get more from the insurance payout than they would after tariffs ate most of the profits on containers shipped on products that were already purchased using pre-tariff prices.

I never thought about how goods come from China until early in the pandemic when the cargo containers weren't running. I saw a few documentaries of the process in 2021 and 2022 including the one 60 Minutes did.

Let's not even entertain the idea. I've had an X Men 97 Rogue preorder since November, and she's due out in a month or so. If it were to get canceled now, I'd probably enter into my own Dark Phoenix saga.

I think major retailers like Target and Walmart may have their own shipping containers and handle the transportation and distribution from overseas to the US.

So the 97 Gambit that gets pushed back one month every month and the three GI Joes I preordered for October are locked in? That's nice.

They might, unless Hasbro just doesn't play that game. Big Bad and EE, for pretty much anything out of China, has it trucked from the factory to their warehouse where they handle having it packed into containers and shipped. It wouldn't surprise me if Hasbro, being so large a company, is very regimented with its process and doesn't want to deal with the added documentation of having a retailer take ownership at the factory vs just shipping it all out once it reaches US soil, even if it means less expense for them during the shipping process.

I love how not only does he think Mattel is a country and a solitary "him"...

But he also wants to put 100% tariffs on them...for deciding to take their operations to India or Vietnam or any other country than China.

So...now we are just punishing companies for finding ways around his war with China? China, the supposed big bad, right? So Mattel says "Fine, we will go somewhere else", and that fat, orange bitch gets angry over THAT?

He really doesn't understand much of anything.
