Sure. Include what they want but just to be clear Medusa had legs from 1000BCE to 1982CE more or less. I’m just saying it’s really cool FO focuses on classic representations of myth and folklore. We have enough lines that video gameify everything. I don’t want Apollo with an anime sword or Shiva with a machine gun.i think it’s awesome Ganesha came with a bowl of sweets and not a sword.
To me what Medusa needs more than a snake body is a grotesque and a beautiful head as well as optional wings which Gorgons have in their earliest incarnations. The 2 heads is essential of course. The wings less so as that falls away in later antiquity as she becomes less monstrous
In my view, she needs ALL of this, as well as an assortment of alternate heads to make her sisters, Stheno & Euryale. I'd seriously have to consider buying three of the figure to make these different characters.
Of course the only reasonable solution to all this is a lamia-harpy-medusa-siren 4-pack to cover every possible combination of bird, snake and sexy ugly woman from Greek mythology.
I'd be SO down for this.
This would absolutely be my preference too, and I was hopeful that they'd go in this direction when considering how much work they seem to put in when being faithful to classic interpretations of mythology, folklore and characters from literature (also hoping for that mustachioed Dracula as well!).
When they did their version of Frankenstein's creature, I immediately started hoping for a Stoker accurate Dracula. Still holding on to that hope!
The introduction of the mermaid has me worried that they'll just do full snake lady with optional snake legs though, when I think the best compromise would be maybe snake lower half (to cover the Harryhausen interpretation that's become quite prevelant) with a human body and a set of human legs to swap in.
I REALLY hope, when they get around to doing her, that they include both the snake body and more humanoid one like they've done with this mermaid lady. I want the mythological look for her, but I also want the option to make her look more Harryhausen-esque. As a kid, Clash of the Titans introduced me to Greek Myths, and while I prefer the more mythology-based look I still would want an homage to that film as well.
Absolutely would love if they included the wings as well, as it's something that often isn't referenced and would be a fun nod to the earlier mythology.
Agreed. My ideal pack-out for this figure would be multiple heads to create all three Gorgon sisters, wings, swappable lower torso with both snake and humanoid configurations, a soft goods dress that could be removed, and diorama pieces. Of course, I'd want them to also do a mythology accurate Perseus as a separate release with the winged sandals & harpe sword of Hermes, the helm of Hades, and the shield and knapsack given to him by Athena.
I recently read Stone Blind by Natalie Haynes, which is a really thoughtful re-telling of the Medusa myth from the perspective of several characters, including Medusa's. I'd heavily reccommend it if you have an interest in the character, or Greek mythology in general. It's firmly rooted in the mythology, including some aspects of the earlier myths, but explores the manipulation of the mortal characters and the brutal way in which they're treated by the gods.
Oh! I definitely need to read this! Sounds fantastic!
Not disputing. Was only pointing out the siren had optional legs, so they have the means to include options since ML is modular.
They definitely should do both. With the swappable lower torso being shown here, it only makes sense.
They've been so meticulous with these figures, I would be surprised if it wasn't a human body with several portraits by default. Would also love to see what they do with soft goods.
I truly hope this happens. It just seems like a perfect fit for the line. They're doing Hindu, Chinese, and Egyptian mythology...no reason they couldn't branch into Greek & Roman as well.
