Hasbro Made-to-Order Figures

I'm comforting myself by saying that the giant enemies I'm collecting are at least getting smaller over time. Haslab Snetinel to 97 Sentinel to Apocalypse. And surely they aren't going to get me for any other characters. I mean the only way they could do that is by releasing Cameron Hodge or maybe a Brood Queen. And they'd never do that... they'd never... do... that...

Even though I would probably prefer something a little more comic coded, that Apocalypse looks dope as hell. I think he'll still sit ok on my comic shelves.

Okay, first of all, I would buy Brood stuff but they HAVE to promise to release space-suit Wolverine or they can GTFO.

Second of all, as a hardcore TAS fan, this really is pretty much 'my' Apocalypse. The problem is just that I don't have very many X-Men figures that are cartoon-coded and I'm not sure how I'm going to split the difference on having them fighting a Sentinel AND Apocalypse. Which means I might be talking myself into buying more cartoon figures that I didn't plan on or even -really- want. Ah, slippery slope, my old friend...

I ordered Apocalypse a few days ago. The retro one won’t do, its sculpt is a mix of too detailed comic style and smoothed out anime style. The MTO has the proportions and build I most associate with the character. The last Apocalypse figure to nail that was the Toy Biz BAF.

The only Apoc figures I've owned since the beginning of the 'super articulation' days was ML7 and Age of Apocalypse. I regret getting rid of the latter. The former was such a fucking awful but awesome figure. I still don't even know where they got that chunky-ass design from, but given what we'd had before that, it was such a huge leap forward for action figures. Special place in my heart and in hell at the same time.

Totally fair.

With this Apocalypse in specific, aside form the color, I don't think it's as strongly cartoon coded as a lot of the 97 stuff. He doesn't have hair so the sculpt there doesn't give anything away, and though it's somewhat lower detail than you might expect on a comic figure, it's not *that* much less. I feel like it will probably fit better than I'm fearing it will.

The Sentinel, that'll be an odd one, but fuck it. I'm just going to live with that one. I got used to the Arcade Sentinel look. I'll get used to these.

See, there's the rub. I kinda want to pose Apoc with the cartoon Cable. Maybe I'll just do that and have a few X-Men fighting the Sentinel. At least I've got a year to figure it out.

I didn't go in on the '97 Sentinel because of the cartoon asthetic. After seeing some reviews I was second guessing myself and thinking of trying to pick up a couple, even though I'm at capacity for large figures. That price hike has made my decision for me.

One thing I don't see many folks talking about (yet) is they confirmed the Haslab Sentinel tentacles fit in the 97, which means those blast effects should also work on the Haslab. So in some ways, they compliment each other for accessories.

Ooooohh, I hadn't thought of doing the reverse! That's exciting! Not including even one blast effect in the Haslab was always an unfortunate oversight.

It wouldn't surprise me if they did some pre-work on the larger blasts for the haslab and it just didn't cost out with everything else. At the very least, seeing the opportunity to give repeat customers a bonus is nice.

I ended up purchasing him as well. I regret not backing the Sentinels; the Titan Heroes versions are nice enough, but it's apples and oranges, and even if Apocalypse ends up getting a TH, I don't wanna make that mistake again. Since it doesn't charge until it ships anyway, and season 2 airs next summer, I can always cancel on the (very off) chance I end up not liking him in the show. The only Apocalypse I have currently is the old BAF, which is certainly nice in its own right, but an appropriately sized, appropriately deco'd one to go in the 97 shelf is more than welcome too. Hasbro's got me by the balls for any 97 release at this point.

For me, the “smoothness” of the ‘97 Sentinels is a feature, not a bug. I appreciate the hyper-detail of the HasLab and the old BAF and such, but this smoother, less-detailed aesthetic is what I associate with “classic”, pre-2000s, Kirby-style Sentinels, which is what I would most want in a Sentinel figure. The made-to-order design feels the most “authentic” to me.
