Yeah, that's a solid take. I do appreciate the "that's already paid for" thing cos I think that's what a lot of the comedians involved were probably thinking - how much is a ration of shit worth? And if the US is on the verge of the end of free speech, make your bag and run. Integrity doesn't fill your gas tank.

Republican Sen. Susan Collins, the chair of the Senate Committee on Appropriations, sharply criticized OMB Director Russ Vought's decision to fire federal workers in a new statement released on Friday.

"I strongly oppose OMB Director Russ Vought's attempt to permanently lay off federal workers who have been furloughed due to a completely unnecessary government shutdown caused by Senator Schumer. Regardless of whether federal employees have been working without pay or have been furloughed, their work is incredibly important to serving the public," she said.

"Arbitrary layoffs result in a lack of sufficient personnel needed to conduct the mission of the agency and to deliver essential programs, and cause harm to families in Maine and throughout our country," she added.

Transportation secretary threatens air traffic controller cuts

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Thursday that air traffic controllers who don't show up for work during the shutdown won't get paid and could be let go from their positions.

"When you come to work, you get paid," Duffy said in remarks on Fox Business' Varney & Co. "We need the best and the brightest, the dedicated controllers, and if we have some on our staff that aren't dedicated, we're going to let them go."

Once one of the big airports shuts down I'm sure we'll see some movement to pay air traffic controllers as essential workers like some other departments.
