Mini Comic Wave 2

I mean... it might be cool to be the Silver Surfer (minus the 'assist in global genocide over and over' part)... but I don't find his adventures intersting at all. He's got very little personality, and so much power that any threat he faces has to also be stupid powerful. I've tried reading Silver Surfer led stories and just never liked 'em.
Read the Ron Lim era. It really is great even though it does have a lot of tie in issues during the Infinity Saga's.

My personal issue here is we're in a market where some figures include entire ass comics with them, but these have a comic accessory for your figure. Personally, if it were up to me? I'd include a mini poster or something of the art as well, at least that would have SOME tangible value as a display piece, even if it's technically just more shit not really needed here. I don't see the point in the 1/12 comics themselves without a spinner rack.

Marvel is pushing 4.99USD and up on their covers these days. Hasbro is raising prices. Ain't no way they throw in tangible paper goods, comic or print, in this economy.

The 1/12 mini comics are really dumb IMO. A spinner rack is also just not saving the concept, either. That said, I just went through a drawer in my desk and found those inserts from the ML20 set.. The cardboard backers that plugged into the lame black plastic bases, you remember those right? The ones that were based on the original ToyBiz diorama bases? I must have tossed them in there when I opened the figures and completely forgot about them. I promptly threw them in the trash when I was done going through that drawer.

I think the 1:12 comics are fun, but it sucks that they don’t open. They’re just not so much fun that they can carry a line of figures. If Hasbro wants to include one, that’s cool, but it doesn’t motivate me to buy the figures and it certainly is no replacement for a BAF, which seems to be a rarity these days.

Hot take, I think the idea of a BAF is cooler than the actuality. I've never once bought an entire wave to have one, and have always instead had to hunt the few I've got on the secondary market. For me, as is, they're typically just junk in with a figure I like. I think if lines were a little different that might change. I can't imagine how much money I'd part with if lines were more geared to completing teams in one shot, or giving you all the main characters of a storyline in one go (for solo characters like Spidey). I'm sure that's not usually practical from a production angle, but still.

The mini comic isn't something I'd miss if it went away, but at least it's an accessory I could see using *somewhere* in a display. A random leg from Super Skrull? Not so much. I do sort of wish they'd throw out a spinner rack, but I have no doubt if there isn't a 3d printed 3rd party one already there will be soon. Shit I could probably make that.

I think team completion needs to be considered if they're going to continue the BAF model. The mixed bag assortments may be appealing to some, but a themed wave is probably going to draw more people to complete the wave.

My guess is there's a two-fold problem. The first is that due to mold use and new parts needed it might not be economically or even physically possible to do a full wave of many teams (exceptions like the X-Men training outfits notwithstanding). The other is sell-through. Let's say they release a line that's "Maximum Carnage" or "Sinister Six" wave with a BAF. Have Spidey be the part-less fig and the villains be the ones with BAF parts. Everyone who loves that storyline or villain team picks up most or all of the wave, but a lot of folks skip it entirely. My guess is looking at annual percentage sell through, mixed waves are more successful since they are more likely to pick up more of the total audience more of the time, and the whales always buy most of the figures regardless what you put out. Sort of insurance against entire waves that end up peg-warming if you misjudge the popularity of Golden Age Defenders or whatever.

At this point in the line there are enough parts the mold use problem might not be as bad, but I'm not sure if that's enough to overcome the rest.

I like the concept of the BAF more than the reality as well, but it usually is just because I don’t care about the final figure. Back in the Toy Biz days, it absolutely got me to buy figures I otherwise would not have, but back then they could be pretty damn big and were new characters. Now they’re just a victim of a lot of characters being done and we’re never getting a 14” character ever again as a BAF and, for me, the vast majority are pretty underwhelming. At least now they’re get stand-alone releases if you’re willing to be patient so you don’t even have to buy a whole wave if you don’t want to.
