Just saw Orville Peck as the Emcee in Cabaret on Broadway a few weeks back
Ahhh I love Cabaret (play, not film, Liza Minelli was woefully miscast) and now I am intrigued.

I think I'm most intrigued by Dastmalchian
I will watch anything he’s in. Fantastic actor, and he and I definitely swim in the same aesthetic pool. He’s “one of us”, definitely.

Same. No matter how small the part, he always nails it. Really wish we got more of him in Dune. Plus, he's from Overland Park, Kansas, where I grew up, so like with Sudeikis and Paul Rudd, I always gotta root for my hometown homies.

Just saw Orville Peck as the Emcee in Cabaret on Broadway a few weeks back. Granted, it's not a role with any dialogue, and the whole point is to kinda be mysterious and playful, but he did a really good job. There's a few heavy moments in the show that he pulled off well. I'm not entirely sure that Street Fighter is going to require much heavy lifting acting-wise, but in terms of actual physical heavy-lifting, he's definitely already got the body for it.
He sure does! I only remember him from his music videos. I liked his vibe, but didn't realize he had buffed up until I image searched him earlier today. And why has he been covering that face!!? Sorry, as an old uggo I get unnecessarily angry when beautiful people cover their faces or people with luscious locks wear hats or shave their heads. Like, flaunt it before you lose it, people! But I digress...

Maybe I'm looking at this movie the wrong way- I don't know how they are approaching it, genre-wise. I honestly don't know anything about it other than the cast, so maybe it's in good hands and I should trust the process? I don't know. I have a 31 year old sour taste in my mouth that's hard to get rid of.

Heheh he went to my acting academy, before me, but still same “root for the homie” energy.

My eensy weensy connection to fame is that my grandpa, who was adopted- his brother was both a teacher and principal at the high school that Paul Rudd and Jason Sudeikis went to. I know he worked there when Paul went there, and I believe Jason too, but I could be wrong on him. Almost every time Paul comes back to KC to visit, he gets together with him. I've never met Paul, unfortunately- I've really only met my grandpa's brother like twice in my life, so I really have nothing to brag about, but I like to think I have that connection to Paul anyway. 😅

From what I understand, it's similar to what Sia did- it's both an anxiety thing, and a character to hide behind so that people will judge him by his musical talent rather than his looks. Though, to be fair, being a gay singer and having a gay audience, there's really not much he leaves to the imagination anyway, but I, too, digress.

I'm definitely curious as to how the movie will turn out. I feel like Street Fighter has always been the slightly less angsty, slightly quirkier younger sibling to Mortal Kombat, so I wouldn't be surprised if the vibe is that- lots of flashy colors and combat, but not too much violence and gore, at least comparatively. Wouldn't be surprised if it gets a big, loud, soundtrack as well. And just the fact that Eric Andre is in it would lead me to believe it'll be at least fairly quippy as well. So....whatever that genre is. Less cheesy than the original, but still tongue-in-cheek.

Very good points. I had a knee-jerk reaction when I saw the cast, but this could work.

Y'know, it's funny that I said what I said. When I was young and decent looking I would have hidden my face too. Now I look back and wonder why I didn't have any self confidence. It's all about self-perception. To get back on track, uh...hadouken!

If you don't like pro-wrestling you are dead inside.

Seriously, do you need accomplished thespians for Street Fighter?

I mean, I’m definitely dead inside, but I doubt the two are related. 🤣
You never know...maybe a few months watching the WWE and you will be out planting trees and rescuing animals?

More seriously, I think Reigns and Rhodes should be fine. Both want to follow in the Batista, Cena, "The Rock" path to move into acting. I doubt this film will tax their skills too much.

There is a slight though significant possibility that being forced to watch wrestling by some of my friends when I was younger is what killed my insides. So many wet and creepy dudes shrieking about how tough they are! Kinda sapped my will to live.
😉

Well, are they gonna follow Batista (solid and improving, better in supporting roles than leading so far), Cena (a mothafucking unicorn of untapped acting talent who is SLAYING it, and has abandoned his silly ring persona for authenticity and humility) or “The Rock” (acting skills analogous to his silly nickname, getting worse over time, sinking fast due to an anchor around his neck composed of his own hubris)?

Bottom line and (kinda) joking aside, I always get the “ick” when a non-actor “celebrity” performer, wrestler or otherwise, forces their way into acting. There are a few exceptions I could pick out (John Cena absolutely, and guys like Harry Connick Jr and such) where it turns out that they are good/great actors, but usually you get Beyoncé Knowles in Goldmember, by which I mean an embarrassing and abominable performance that is lauded by “fans” simply because they “like” the “celebrity”. Totally bums me out.

I know some folks are like “it’s a popcorn flick, turn off your brain”, but I hate that. Movies should be as well-made as possible, regardless of subject matter or genre. And “well-made” means insisting on a solid, *finished* script and skilled actors. There is no movie that “doesn’t need” good acting.

Also it’s one thing to be limited by budget and such and have to “make do with what you can get” when it comes to actors and such, but in a studio production there is no excuse for cut-rate talent. Street Fighter certainly requires actors well-versed (or willing to be hardcore trained) in martial arts, but I know tons of excellent actors who also can fight well. Indeed, when I direct fights onstage, I always harangue my fighter-actors that the storytelling and especially the acting come first, and I would much rather have the audience believe the performance than believe the fight.

Anyway, yeah, I’m pretty passionate about this one. And, if I’m honest, I just don’t connect to the blunt, aggressive style of pro wrestling “performance”. It makes me incredibly uncomfortable to watch grown humans behave like that. Reminds me a bit of the one time I tried to watch a bullfight in Seville: I couldn’t do it, had to walk out.

For what its worth, he seems to be getting a lot of hype for his performance in his new film, we will see.

That's fair, I think of it more along the lines of any comic book or action movie with campy/absurd violence and over the top characters - good guys and bad guys have a dispute, bad guys get the initial upper hand through nefarious means, but eventually the good guys win by beating up and shaming the bad guys. Not an actual philosophy I subscribe to myself, solving things through violence, and not really sure that I think that kids should be watching it without some context from adults that this is all a story and not how to handle problems. I liken it to the sequences with the diner bully in Superman II... And as we discuss in the wrestling thread, it is as much the goofy/silly/campy aspects that are enjoyable as anything.

Bullfights are barbaric. I hope it gets relegated to history in Spain soon. Would never watch.

I totally get that read, for sure.
But that’s not what I, personally, am into comic book storytelling for.
I’m all about the “modern mythology”, “desperate struggle with high stakes to save people”, “epic stories that are morally inspiring” stuff: the “beating up” is not what I’m there for at all, certainly not the “shaming”. Those are the things that upset and dismay me about the MCU/Iron Man stuff; the arrogant taunting, the posturing, the put-downs, the focus on “we’ll damn sure avenge it” rather than helping people.

I’m definitely a “my heroes are firefighters” type guy. What I’ve seen of pro wrestling is all about ego and machismo and “who’s the *greatest*”. Honestly I despise competitive behavior in general, whether real or fictionalized.
I’m sure there is more to wrestling than that, but I’ve seen a lot and what I’ve seen is not palatable to me.
