Star Wars Black Series

Has anyone ever seen the Red Letter Media longform critiques on the Prequels? They have a gimmick, but once you're past it, the points and discussion are solid and worthwhile.

Anyway, last week they dropped a new one about Star Wars Right Now. It wasn't a lot we already don't talk about, but the Sequel and TV show section had some points I hadn't considered about designing by committee and the way Disney functions. Ten years on and I'm still bummed about how they fumbled Rey and co.

I think, more than anything, it's the complete lack of cohesiveness in the trilogy. I actually really liked Last Jedi, and I didn't think Force Awakens was bad, but watching those three movies back-to-back there is an utter lack of direction and it shows. Lots of threads set up that never pay off, and that really bugs the crap out of me. Rise of Skywalker is obviously the worst offender, by a wide margin, but it also somehow befouls the other two entries by association. So much was set up in the first two films that you think are going to pay off, but nope. RoS even goes the extra mile of setting up MORE stuff that it doesn't address by the end of the film, which is really maddening.

Yeah, it's a cohesion thing. TFA was a fun film that had a lot of potential. I actually had fun watching that. I never, ever, ever want to re-litigate TLJ, but all I'll say is I saw it twice in the theater, enjoyed the first viewing because it's very deft filmmaking, and on the second viewing it just made me feel like shit about everything all the way to my core and I never wanted to see or think about it again. If I go the rest of my life never thinking too much about TLJ I will be a happy man. And of course ROS is objectively a fuckfest of bad decisions that undoes everything that came before it and leaves a brilliantly talented cast swinging by their tits with no material to work with.

I left ROS thinking okay, I'm good, I never want another Star Wars story again. They can stop now. Clearly nobody there knows how to tell a story anymore. It's time to move on and bury the franchise in the past. But then we got multiple shows that kicked ass in different measures, so mostly I just never want to think about any of those three films again except in passing. Jump the franchise 300 years in the future and make sure no Skywalkers are left alive to continue the saga. It's part of why I wanted the Acolyte to succeed. If they're afraid to go into the future, then go into the past far enough that Vader isn't even a glimmer in his non-existent father's eye.

It's why I always feel a little bad for people who refuse to watch the Clone Wars

No but I watched some, throughout the series, especially the end, and I can appreciate it for sure. Just have a harder time with animated as I get older. And that's entirely a me thing. I know I'm missing out on a lot even behind star wars.
I often wonder if they'll ever do something similar that salvages the sequels
I don't know if that's possible, at least with ROS.
I don’t really get the sequel hate. I mean, I get the Rise of Skywalker-specific hate, because that film was obviously just totally cowardly assembled by committee. But The Force Awakens is totally solid, and The Last Jedi is, like, the second or third best SW film of all time.
I can... Avoid disagreeing with you heh. Both Force Awakens and Last Jedi weren't horrible on their own, but I'm sure I've expressed here before that their faults could have been remedied and their high points magnified had the third movie done its job. And as I've said before, they went another way. They did not see the third movie as a chance to wrap it up, tie it together, unite the tones and plots, just nah. Just gotta have something in the theater that month.

I have. Not in a while but I remember really enjoying them. Funny enough, didn't they show bits of Abrams' trek reboot showing how star wars should be handled? Psh.

Heh, so YouTube is another thing I apparently am reluctant to dedicate time to anymore. I'm interested but I doubt I'll get to it. I suck.

Honestly... I know TFA gets hate for recycling plots and such, and I get that on some level but don't care because it did it pretty well for the most part. And if the trilogy got stronger with each entry, it would make a lot of sense to kick it off with some greatest hits. Then Last Jedi took a hard turn in a different direction, maybe even too severe. I know there's issues with Luke's choices and I agree, it was also interesting to me to have flashbacks and slow motion, something not in star wars before. Weird to introduce that stuff in the send movie. I did kinda see some choices they made to be a bit of a middle finger to both Force Awakens AND whoever had to do the third movie.

Exactly! It could have made the other two even better. Once you see episode nine, the go back to seven and eight and damn but they're even better now! Instead they gave me a movie I never want to watch again and made me regret buying seven and eight on Blu-ray. It's just a breakneck race to get to the place and find the thing!!!

My distaste for the Sequel Trilogy can be all but blamed on my expectations. I went in expecting something new. TFA was 2 hours of "look we're not the prequels," but by aping the OT. TLJ had one trick: setup a nostalgia expectation and 180 it. Since the setup was still a repeat it didn't feel new. TRoS sounds really promising with the original director (Stormtrooper revolution!) and the director's kick-off speech reportedly being about this movie being an opportunity to do something new with the franchise, then he was canned.

That's really the hardest thing a lot of times, which is why I try to rewatch some things and sometimes I'll come to appreciate what they did over what I wanted it to be. Sometimes.

When I watched TCW for the first time, we did the chronological order, and it really helped my enjoyment of things. I can't imagine watching things all out of order and being confused on why things are happening and when. It definitely helped my love of Anakin and Obi-Wan that the films didn't bother to fill in, but moreso than that, it helped me feel a little better for loving all the side characters I do like Plo Koon and such because, you know, they actually had a character for once.

Same as Rebels; I totally get the kid-focused presentation of things, but if you can get past the moments that are clearly aimed at kids (which become fewer and farther between as the seasons go on), it's really a great watch with so many memorable characters.

I'll die on the hill that TLJ is a damn good movie- both story-wise and aesthetically (the marketing campaign might very well be my favorite in all the saga). I do think, despite what many would say, it feels like a (mostly) natural continuation of TFA and takes things in arguably a more interesting direction than I was expecting. But my distaste and loathing of TROS is strong and unyielding. It just feels like they completely chickened out on doing anything interesting. Instead of honoring what came before and running with it, they undid it almost immediately. Instead of trying to silence the toxic fanboys who ran Kelly Marie Tran off the internet, they just wrote her out. They completely caved to the complaining of the fans, which I feel was the complete wrong thing to do. They went for quick, easy shock value like Chewbacca's fake-out death, and didn't even have the guts to stick with it for more than, what, 90 seconds? Just felt like a timid movie, if that makes sense.

nd sure, Carrie's death, I'm sure, threw a huge wrench into things, but I really think they should've kept the bones of Trevorrow's script, Duel of the Fates, and ran with it. Was it perfect? Not at all, but like TLJ, felt like it honored what came before instead of just saying "psych!" and doing their own thing. Yeah, Leia was a big part of it, but they could've either rewritten her role for someone else, or just deepfaked her. Would've been a controversial choice, I'm sure, but they seem to have had Billie's blessing, and I can get over some shoddy CGI, if it works for the story. Tarkin doesn't really bother me that much in Rogue One. It would've at least, to me, felt more natural than shoehorning in unused dialogue and reaction shots, which looked kinda off anyway, into the film.

Anyway. That's enough from me. I could be here all day discussing my dislike of TROS. It's the only piece of Star Wars media that I have no real interest in rewatching. I've seen it a handful of times, and that's plenty for me.

Don't even mind the recycled plot of force awakens because I grew up with all the legends, books and comics and those were very formulaic and repetitive.

I also knew exactly what I was signing up for.

As has been said it was really the third one that just gave the finger to the second one and then kind of tried to cover parts two and three on new terms which was really stupid and disrespectful to the story and audience.

We've talked about it before with fan bases. The vocal minority on the internet is nothing compared to the actual ticket holders and popcorn buyers. Every single person I know that complained about the prior movies was never really in on it in the first place. They were not buying toys. They do not read the comics. They do not have interest in the video games. They are just Star Wars fans by virtue of liking the original trilogy 40 some years ago and not being able to sort themselves out.

People like my mom will go see the movies and come back and say this was awesome, I had fun and go about their day and ready and willing for the next one. I don't know why they catered to the biggest complainers. History has shown us across television and video games and everything else. There is no need to listen to those people. Even if it's just capitalism and money, the real money that counts always shows up for authenticity.

This is my partner, and she's a librarian who consumes a staggering number of books and TV shows a year. She almost never, ever says a negative thing about anything unless it's a book that stealth traumatizes her ("this fucking book better not make me cry before I try to go to sleep tonight"). I've tried to make an actual effort to give fewer fucks over the past 15 years and really live by the rule of "talk about what you love, ignore what you don't like, because complaining is boring" but any time I mention some online brouhaha she looks at me like I'm insane. The silent majority of viewers are wicked okay with "that was fine" from their entertainment.

I go to the theater a lot. Like I just want to get out of the house and quiet my brain and eat buttered popcorn. I see almost everything.

Rarely do I see something that actually makes me go. This is terrible. Or as I would like to phrase it, Well that was a waste of my time. In truth, it was never a waste of my time, because I was sitting in the dark with a quiet brain, looking at a pretty actress at the very least, eating popcorn and candy, and it was just like 2 hours of my brain off away from the stupid world.

There are movies that have changed my life. There are movies that are near and dear to me. But most things are just fine. Wouldn't recommend it. Wouldn't see it again. But I don't regret it. Can't think of anything I've actually walked out of or been upset that I spent the money and time on.

As far as " my childhood is ruined crowd", sure, sometimes they do things in the comics or other media where I'm like. Oh, that's not what I like about Batman. But guess what. I still have that and I can watch and read it. I don't have to induct whatever they're doing with X-Men into the new Canon if I don't want to. It's my imagination and brain and plastic. I can do what I want.

Buddy of mine is upset that Mark Waid recently rewrote all of Batman Canon for this new relaunch they're doing. Long Halloween is no longer canon. The thing is I never knew what actually was. I always thought it was just some standalone side story. A great story. One of my favorites. But I was not aware that it was part of whatever main line DC historia they have going on.

Okay so it's not canon because Mark Waid okay said so on this particular relaunch. I'm just going to ignore that.

"You can't, it's official!"

To who? F Time Warner. I do what I want.

So I will never understand the people that take it so seriously. There is a deeper nostalgic childhood wound there.

Some of the rumored figures from the start of this year still haven't been mentioned, and I really hope they get revealed soon. Especially Saesee Tiin, Agen Kolar, Pong Krell, Kyle Katarn, Cere Jundha, Darth Sion, Darth Traya, and Lord Starkiller.

But there are so many others that have been rumored, and I'd think most if not all of them would be real since all the others have come true this year like EPIII Obi Wan and Anakin, the new Chewie and Han, Clone Lieutenant Galle, etc.

But besides all the Jedi and Sith I mentioned, we are supposed to get

A new Obi Wan, 3PO, and R2 from A New Hope, Blind Kanan, Hera, Zeb from Mandalorian, Carson Teva, Embo, Season 2 Luthen Rael, Cinta Kaz, Kino Loy, Snowtrooper updated, some other Clones including the Galactic Marine and EPII Clone Pilot and more.

Hopefully we start seeing some of this stuff revealed or up for pre order soon.
