NFL Talk

Assuming most of these teams can avoid the injury bug. I'll go with the following picks to make the playoffs. But I wouldn't be surprised to see a much different list at the end of the season.

NFC
1. Philadelphia
2. Green Bay
3. Tampa Bay
4. San Francisco
5. Detroit
6. Washington
7. Seattle

AFC
1. Buffalo
2. Baltimore
3. Houston
4. Kansas City
5. Denver
6. Cincinnati
7. San Diego er L.A.

Maybe we can all make a new prediction at the half way point of the season. It would be interesting to see how much had changed and how much would stay the same.

And so it begins. Watching FNIA (what a dumb acronym).

Interesting to hear about the vote on the "Tush Push." I didn't know it was that controversial behind the scenes with the teams. I guess the success of it with the Eagles, and the fact it is pretty much indefensible, made enough teams in the league almost ban it. According to the reporting the Cowboys were the loudest voice for banning it, and the vote to keep it was decided by two votes. So it may be the final season of the Tush Push.

As a Bills fan I am all about them taking the AFC this year, but that nagging little doubt in the back of my head keeps me from being confident. Plus no matter what the Chiefs have earned the right to be considered the kings of the AFC. Also of course the Eagles are the team to beat going into the season.

Nice to have the NFL back.

Looks like we'll have a lot more football conversation this year than we have in previous years. That's exciting.
I'll go with the following picks to make the playoffs.
Who's your Super Bowl pick?
Interesting to hear about the vote on the "Tush Push."
I kind of see both sides of it. 1) It's not a fun or exciting play, but 2) It's the purest football play of anything in the modern game.

Personally, I'd vote to keep it. I don't think one team's dominance is reason to ban a thing. That goes against the spirit of competition. Get better at stopping it.

I think there's a much more compelling argument to extend the NBA's three-point line. Yes, the current rule favors certain teams, but more than that, it's homogenized the game. Every team's shot chart is the same now. If you're going to change a rule like that, I think you need more reason than "Philly is really good at it."

If Philly's O-line all get injured I don't think the tush push will be as scary. They lost two linemen last night and their run game evaporated... except for QB scrambles.

The game tonight was weird. Unstoppable offenses in the first half and no offense in the second half. And whoever pulled out their CD Lamb voodoo doll at halftime has to be happy. He has 100 yards in the first quarter and in the second half he acted like the football was covered in butter or something... just catch after catch dropped.

The Cowboys and Eagles are two of my least favorite teams so I wish they could both lose.

I've never liked the play or wanted them to get rid of the rule that forbid players from pushing teammates forward. It feels like a rugby play to me, so I'd have been fine with them banning it on those grounds. The calls to ban it though definitely ring hollow when it's coming from Philly's opponents in the NFC East.

Who's your Super Bowl pick?
Assuming both teams stay healthy, I'm going with the Bills vs the 49ers. Niners finally win another Super Bowl when no one expects it.

I thought I was the only one who said things like this :p

I'm not a fan of the tush push. It does seem like rugby. And it's quite boring to watch. But if it bothers Jerry Jones, we've got to keep it around.

That was a pretty good game last night between the Chiefs and the Chargers. The regression gods came after the Chiefs hard ending their ridiculous streak of play in one score games. Those waiting on their demise will wake up with a smile as I saw a group of receivers not able to get much separation or do much of anything with the ball in their hands. Mahomes took some uncharacteristic shots too on scrambles that he’s probably feeling today. They’re left hoping Worthy won’t be out too long, but shoulder injuries can be tough. Their pass rush was not good either and their offensive line might not be improved over last year. Still, I’m not sold that this is a sign of the end, but I definitely don’t expect them to coast to the top seed in the conference again.

The Chargers had a lot of success throwing out of heavy packages, even though Herbert primarily targeted his wide receivers. I am glad I’m not a Chargers fan who has to watch Quentin Johnston every week. What a maddening player. He has talent, but trouble hanging onto the ball and then he does dumb shit like run parallel with the line-to-gain on 3rd down.

It’s fun having football back though, even though I stayed up too late and got up too early. I’ve got a cook-out to attend to today for my sister’s birthday, but tomorrow it’s butt in chair and football all day!

Definitely can't say I am not happy to see them lose, and in a one score game no less!!!!

I also can't lie and say I am not hopeful that this is a sign of a team finally sliding from the top. However it is way too early to say that. The only thing to remember is that the team is a year older, and guys like Kelce were already getting questions about losing a step last year. Lovely to see Mahomes not get ridiculous calls after getting hit like he has been the last couple years (especially at the sideline). Who knows if that will be the case all season though.

Ok Bills don't fumble the start of the season now.

Yeah, I hate overreacting to week one, but this was my takeaway as well. I'm relatively confident they won't represent the AFC in the Super Bowl this year. The deficiencies on the offensive and defensive line are huge, and they never truly replaced Tyreek Hill. Their competition in the AFC—particularly Baltimore and Buffalo—is too stout.

Team-building is really fucking hard. It's even harder when you're picking 31 or 32 in every draft.

I'm sure Mahomes and the Chiefs will be back, but I think it's going to take a few years before they're Super Bowl-ready again.

Yeah... For awhile I thought Kelce wasn't going to be in the game ar all, but they did manage to get him that big touchdown. Still with Worthy hurt and Rice suspended they have problems at receiver, the O-line isn't special and their pass rush was non-existent without exoctic blitzes. The KC secondary did a good job taking away McConkey, but made 100 year old Keenan Allen look like a pro-bowler again.

Its tough to judge how the season will go based on the first game, played 5000 miles from home.

On a niners note... not thrilled to have whispers of a McCaffrey lower leg issue ahead of game 1 again. I remember learning he was a scratch for game 1 last year as we were walking in to Levi's Stadium and it tanked the season. If he really has a leg issue again the 49ers season, and McCaffrey's career, could be cooked.

I was a little surprised he managed to stay healthy during his first few years in SF. Those niggling injuries sidelined him all the time in Carolina.

Its true... and concerns over his durability is why they traded for a starting caliber back from Washington in the pre-season. But he was talking SO much about how good he was feeling all off season, so this is lame.

Trying to keep my expectations grounded for the Patriots this year, but game 1 went worse then even I was anticipating. The team was competitive for basically one half of football against a team, the Raiders, expected to be middling at best. Thirteen points is a bad showing for this offense. After a shaky start on both sides of the ball, the McDaniels scheme got rolling and guys were getting open and Maye was doing a good job distributing the ball. The offensive line could not get any push in the ground game which was unexpected and it didn’t improve after halftime. The Patriots had a chance for the double score before the half, but penalties and poor execution squandered some choice field position and then they came out and threw a pick on the first drive of the second half and it was all downhill from there. Pass blocking fell apart and the Raiders started squatting on routes because the receivers can’t win on talent alone. If the defense wasn’t sending extra men they weren’t able to pressure Smith. And when they did in the second half Smith was able to exploit the poor coverage abilities of the New England linebackers and safeties. And to top it off the special teams played poorly with bad coverage and a missed 40 yard field goal.

If there’s a silver lining, the Dolphins got manhandled by the not expected to be good Colts and they’re on deck. The bad news is the Patriots historically are terrible at Miami to the point where it definitely gets in their heads. The Jets lost though and if the Bills can’t topple the Ravens they’ll be tied for first so all is not lost, but I was expecting a better showing today in Mike Vrabel’s debut as head coach.

Yeah the AFC East put on a display today. Not a good display, but a display.

This is at least good news for my Bills tonight. Should they lose to the Ravens, as you said, everyone is still at square one. If they win then they get a nice leg up in week one on the whole division. I watched the Jets/Steelers and I am definitely not looking forward to the Bills playing them. They showed they were definitely improved on the run game which was, and may still be, the Bills weakness last year. Though the Bills also have a pretty thin secondary again this year so I am apprehensive about how the defense will do against the Ravens with Henry and Jackson being huge threats.
