The Reading Room

A few things I'm reading currently:
  • Daredevil (Brian Michael Bendis). The full collection, still just on volume 1. It's been many, many years since I read this - probably pretty close to when it originally released. I'm planning on continuing through to the Brubaker run when I'm finished (which I've never read), and Zdarsky after that (also not read). Plus anything in between worth reading.
  • Rom: The Original Marvel Years Omnibus vol 1 (Bill Mantlo). Picked it up when the figure was announced. Not sure if I'll get volumes 2-3 after cause I'm reluctant to spend the money, but it's a real fun read. Glad I got it, excited for the figure.
  • The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Klay (Michael Chabon). Read this several years ago, probably 2018 or 2019. Absolutely incredible novel, a historical fiction based on the Golden Age of American comics . We just got our books back on proper shelves after moving a year ago and this jumped out at me - time for a reread.

@hmmberto BMB's DD run is the perfect companion to the Disney+ revival.

I'd recommend Brubaker, Waid/Samnee, and Zdarsky. I quit on the Soule and Ahmed runs.

Ah man... I need to go back and read some Daredevil. I didn't get into him until I was an adult, and was fortunate enough to read several runs before the Netflix show hit (I loved the show so much, so maybe I wouldn't have read after that.) But I can't even remember who was writing which ones because I just consumed them so quickly. The Echo stuff, and when Matt went to jail, and when he declared himself Kingpin, etc. Man they were good. Dark Reign is what got me back into comics after so many years, and Daredevil was part of what I was reading for that crossover, and I enjoyed that so much that his book and New Avengers were the ones I backtracked on.

I'm not sure if I mentioned this on one of the old forums but I recently completed the 70s Dracula run. That was a fantastic read and I have found appreciation for a character I thought was just a lame ripoff of a classic property. Colan's art is probably my favorite comic art of all time.

Can anyone recommend me some more Dracula stories besides that one? Even modern would be ok.

Ah, the Waid run is the one I was leaving out - that's actually the one that most caught my interest at the time, but I've never really been able to keep up with comics in real time. Thanks for the reminder!

Just about to finish Lev Grossman's Bright Sword. A truly elegant retelling of Arthurian legends. Deeply moving but also action-packed and fun.

Tomb of Dracula is, bar none, my favorite run of a comic ever. I love it more every time I read it, and as a hardest-of-hardcore Dracula fanatics I think it’s one of the best mass media uses of the character ever. And yes, Colan’s art is absolutely my favorite comic at of all time. I continue to yearn for an official Marvel Legends figure of Colan’s design IN COLAN’S STYLE.

There’s actually a four-issue “sequel” series from the early 90s, by the same team, called “Day of Blood! Night of Redemption!” It’s worth a read.

I loved Tomb of Dracula too. I just picked up Stoker's Dracula by Roy Thomas and Dick Giordano. Haven't started reading yet, but stoked (pun intended?) to. Flipping through, looks like Giordano gave it his all.

Its Colan and Palmer together. They bring out the best in each other. I have all but two issues (#1 and one of the Giant Size) of the original run b/c I can't take looking at their work on modern shiny paper with the overly loud color grading.

Started re-reading the novelization of Revenge of the Sith recently, but then they announced the absolutely beautiful anniversary edition coming later this year, so I may hold off on it (or just read it again). It's not only a great Star Wars novel, but just a damn good novel in general. Matthew Stover was on something when he wrote it, that's for sure.

I loved that novel, and I don’t even like the prequels! My favorite part is how he wrote Palpatine’s disfigurement: he made it clear that it was not an injury, but rather an unmasking of Palpatine’s true face. That was a HUGE selling point for me that I wish they had made more clear in the actual film.

I read the first issue of H2SH yesterday. Is it just me or is this not Jim Lee's best work? The ad they keep using has Batman's neck stuck way out.
