S.H. Figuarts Marvel Figures

I was just able to order Spider-Man from Amazon Japan. Sold and Shipped by Amazon Japan proper. 12,701 yen (around 86 USD) all in. Whether or not I will have to pay tariffs over and above that when he actually ships next year is anyone’s guess.

Why would they be likely to do that? BBTS, EE, etc. would bring these over in bulk and pay the tariff fee on the whole container, not 80 bucks an item. And if the fees are outrageous to the point where it's not viable, they'll do what the importers are doing and keep them overseas until it makes sense to bring them over.

If BBTS had the ability to do that from the start they wouldn’t have made customers pay an additional tariff tax on all of their products store wide since the month of April. Their hands have been tied since the beginning of this mess. Things won’t suddenly improve 100x fold when the situation gets unfathomably more complicated from this point forward.

I could be wrong here, but I think part of the reason import Disney IP figures are expensive when sold domestically in the US is because of Hasbro's license. All other companies are blocked from distributing 1/12th scale in the US. I think BBTS gets around it by ordering the figures and either marking them up past a certain threshold, or ordering the figures close to retail and charging less of a markup than they would on wholesale - just enough to make a small profit and to keep people in the BBTS ecosystem.

SHF's Star Wars figures couldn't even be advertised in the US. If you go to the Bandai USA site you wouldn't even know they had made a pretty big lineup of 1/12 SW figures. They could only advertise their movie realization line, which was larger than 1/12 and consisted of samurai versions of the SW characters, and could be sold in the US. If you see the Tamashii setup at a con stateside, there's no Star Wars except for the movie realizations.

However, they were able to show Sony Marvel characters like Venom and Scarlet Spider, as well as the Marvel vs Capcom Cyclops, probably because the video game license is a separate thing and falls outside of Hasbro's ability to block them. If so, this is a pretty smart way of making Marvel figures that they can sell and market in US stores. In theory, this should make the SHF Capcom figures significantly cheaper than MAFEX bought at domestic sites that don't have that loophole. However, Bandai is aware of what US customers are used to paying in dollars, and are choosing to price them at $100 a pop, when they are $67 in translated yen. This is similar to how they price their DBZ SHF figures... 3,400 yen equals a $35 figure at US retailers, even though it's only ~$23 if you are doing a direct conversion of currency.

TLDR - Unless the de minimis exception is reinstated, it's probably a better deal to buy SHF non-Disney Marvel from US stores, depending on your state's sales tax. Best shipping I get (which is slow, not DHL or Fedex) from Japan is around ~$15 per figure. So Cyclops would cost me ~$85 after conversion fee, to my doorstep. From BBTS, he'd be $114 (with 10% sales tax and shipping). That's a $32 difference, and significant. But without de minimis, that figure could theoretically be $165, which is ridiculous. There's a possibility the de minimis will be reinstated for items valued less than $100, then we're good to go. Or that they will streamline the process and we'll pay a 15% tariff on the item itself, which would bring Cyclops up to $95.50 shipped to my doorstep from Japan. Still cheaper, but with a lot of what-ifs and potential headaches. Up to you whether it's worth that risk.

That's what they've been doing and will continue to do. The de minimis removal has nothing to do with BBTS. They still take-in everything in China and have it loaded into a shipping container and brought to their warehouse. They pay a tariff fee on the container and pass some of that onto the consumer. For my $26 Storm Arena figure, it ended up being less than 2 dollars so they ate most of the fee (and it's still the only figure I've been charged a fee on). The de minimis exemption only applies to individual parcels shipping from out of the country through a mail carrier. If anything, BBTS, EE, and other US-based retailers are okay with the exemption going away because it makes costs more expensive for out of country retailers and discourages US buyers from going to them.

I went with BBTS for Spidey. I'd be fine paying a 15% tariff after buying from Japanese store, but I won't be too happy paying DHL a brokerage fee for them to do paperwork.

EE has free shipping, too. I'll have to decide between them and AmiAmi by 7 p.m. PT.

Doesn't it seem relatively clear that AmiAmi will be at least $20 cheaper?

And if it falls through the odds are decent you'll be able to order later anyway from one of the American retailers. The risk there is that we're talking about Spidey, and he's the most popular superhero around so he might sell out everywhere in the coming weeks/days/hours.

But I don't know that this particular Spidey is in high demand. Maybe it will be...hard to tell!

I dunno what DHL charges, but earlier today I saw that both FedEx and UPS raised their international processing fee they've been charging all along anyway from $1.50 to $2.50 to account for the new tariff processing.
It's so hard to find reliable answers. I'm looking at DHL reddit and I'm seeing a handful of people say $17 + whatever the tariff percentage. That's not too bad, but then I see other people getting stuck with big invoices. I probably need to stay away from reddit.

If $17 is correct, I would put a $60 Amiami Spidey at $111 - $116 shipped with DHL. You also have to take into account, Amiami isn't offering DHL at the moment. That's why the Bane I just bought from them with EMS was at risk for an $80 fee because USPS can't figure out the correct percentage. EMS was 4740 jpy, around $32.50.

What's the math here? $60 + $17 DHL fee?? + $9 tariff + shipping?
Yes, $9 for the tariff and I was estimating DHL shipping to be $25-$28.
If the info on the DHL fee is correct, they charge either 2% of the item's value or $17, whichever is higher. I can't stress enough, I'm pulling this info from reddit 😆

If I could guarantee Amiami and BBTS were equal in total price, I would go with Amiami if it means getting a package three to four days after release.

Yeah been at amiami since a few minutes before he dropped and I still missed Spidey. Couldn't add him to the cart properly and he sold out in less than. Minute.Crap. And it's 4am for me right now! Missed him on the other Japanese sites yesterday as well when I took a few minutes of break from refreshing them. Hopefully some of the local stores will have him eventually, cause I'd really love to have that fig but I'm not gonna pay double to a scalper.

I hate limited preorders so effing much.
