I love a franchise film that clearly despises franchises.
Ironically, I think the future films in the franchise may have helped Alien 3 by expanding the Alien myths beyond Ripley and not letting this be the "end".

When it came out, for me at least, it really burned all of its goodwill away in the first few minutes due to killing off Newt and Hicks - undercutting the relatively happy, yet earned, ending of Aliens. Naturally the whole film stays that dark so I understand the point, but it is an example where I think it is a mistake in any sequel to undermine the emotional beats of the prior film so that the hero's effort was essentially for nothing. To me it almost didn't matter how good (or not) the rest of the film was after that decision.

Exactly how I felt. I LOVE Aliens, and Alien3 really threw away everything that mattered in that movie. And knowing some of the BTS stuff that was happening reinforces how much Alien3 just doesn't matter. But yeah, I cannot stand sequels that piss away the great ending of the previous movie just to get back to status quo or because the filmmakers have their own story in mind despite what just happened.

I just watched Alien 3 for the first time. More so to catch up on Fincher's filmography than Alien's, but I'll get there eventually, too.

I understand why people hate it. It's overstuffed to the point of boredom. The middle third drags. I can't possibly give it a thumbs down after the ending, though. I love a franchise film that clearly despises franchises.

The Matrix Resurrections is bad, but I begrudgingly respect it for sabotaging its own intellectual property.
Did you watch the theatrical release or the Assembly Cut?

I never really saw the Assembly Cut as adding anything worthwhile. Instead of a dog, it's an ox. Instead of never being seen again, Doctor Who screws everyone over and releases the Alien after they manage to trap it. If there was anything else it brings to the table, I honestly can't remember. Neither version addresses the real issues: killing off Charles Dance when they do, or how unforgivably bad the film looks at times. It's an entry in a series that was over a decade old at this point, making a film that looks worse than the original is a crime.

Completely agree about Newt. The only redeeming factor there was that it didn't boil Ripley down to woman = mom. That's one of my major issues with Aliens.

I couldn't believe they killed off Charles Dance so early. I expected them to find him alive later in the movie.

Personally, I think the Assembly Cut does make it a better movie, but, like Revox stated- better doesn't necessarily equal good. To be fair, I'm someone who always appreciates a little more fleshing out, even when it's not necessarily warranted, so my opinion doesn't really count. I'll admit it's still a middle-of-the-road, bleak as hell movie. Fincher did as Fincher does and perhaps went a bit too dark and dour, which certainly works for the universe, but doesn't necessarily make for a fun watch. I can see why people love it, I can see why people hate it. In many ways, I'd prefer Resurrection to 3; again, not because it's better, per se, but it's certainly an easier, arguably more entertaining watch. If nothing else, I applaud them for taking a new approach to the series and not just repeating the formula (more or less), but it's certainly a hard turn that can leave many feeling a bit alienated (no pun intended)

The other thing for me was I had read Dark Horse's comic series that were a direct sequel, then a followup, to Aliens following the survivors of that movie and of course I preferred that, then 3 comes out and immediately made it clear none of that is gonna happen.

I saw Happy Gilmore 2, not my choice. Full disclosure: I have never been an Adam Sandler fan. I enjoyed the first movie at the time but I don't think I have liked anything else he's done until Funny People, which felt like a great movie to retire after.

HG2 had some funny bits but it's a sequel that takes "leaning on the original" to a higher, aggravating level. If you feel like watching it but think maybe you should watch the first to remember everything that happened, no need. They will explain every call back immediately before or after it occurs. Probably 20% of HG2 is footage from the first movie. Sure, the plot has a lot of regurgitation, but I expected that. But man, it's more like Call Back: The Movie.

I did appreciate #justiceforshooter though. And Happy's golf cart mishap got an immediate rewatch.

Watched AVP a couple days ago and I'm about 30 minutes into Requiem now.

AVP is just not fun. It's only like 90 minutes and it takes 45 of those for Xenos and Preds to actually show up. Then the action itself was ok? Nothing really memorable. The huge exposition dump about the origins of the temple made me lol.

Y'all weren't kidding about Requiem. I have a pretty decent tv and it's hard to see anything. And they kill the kid! Who I know as young Shawn Spencer from Psych, making it even worse!

Finally was ble to take my son to see Fantastic Four. I actually really enjoyed it, even more so than Superman. They nailed Johnny and Ben’s dynamic. Loved all the fan service for comic readers.

Over the weekend, my wife was at a Girl Scout Camp overnight thing with my daughter. This gave me free reign of the TV. I started watching The Worlds End when my 13 year old sat with me. It was kinda late and I was gonna get him to bed, but decided heck it, and let him watch. He absolutely loved it. I mean, it may be his favorite movie now. He was picking out stuff I haven't ever noticed in it (the same guy is playing the arcade machine in each pub). Sunday we watched Shaun of the Dead, and he loved that as well. Soon we will watch Hot Fuzz (my personal favorite), and then just have to watch them all again.
