McFarlane DC Multiverse

This is the first time I am ever ordering direct from Todd's site, but I really want both Mr. Bones and Obsidian. I am in a conference tomorrow at 9 am so am going to have to try and get this done on my phone under the table.

I remember when people couldn’t wait until Mattel to lose the license and that the 7” scale was superior to 6” scale.

I mean... that means you were hanging around the wrong places and talking to the wrong people. That wasn't the prevailing sentiment on this site at all. I was happy enough with Mattel and had zero interest in seven inch scale figures.

Also my complaints with McFarlane remain the awful proportions on some, the inconsistent sizing wihin the scale, the tiny heads. I do think there remain some issues with odd character selection but every line has that issue so that is not why I'm happy the license is moving on.

I will attempt to pause whatever I am doing today and see about Mr. Bones. Gonna depend on how much he costs me. MTS10 is the coupon code, correct?

I recall a whole lot of people on the fwoosh basically telling me to shut up and get over it. “It’s our turn for 7” scale DC figures! Go back and buy all the old 6” scale figures if you want”. Crisis of Infinite Crashes makes going back to check impossible now.

Back then, my attitude was very much to “stick with the devil you know”. I didn’t want to change scale, I didn’t want to start over, and I was unsure of what Todd would actually do. Turns out, he saved the DC brand. So much so that the biggest toy company in the world has basically bought the entire license in perpetually.

So yeah, fuck Todd.

Let me just say something else, if I sound like an apologist for Todd, I don’t mean to be. The pricing is a function of lots of things. I’ll pay or I won’t. Up to each of us individually really. My main issue is with feeding the scalpers. Todd does it on purpose. Always has since the days of “Party Angela”. I hate that. I bought a Steve Trevor I didn’t need yesterday to keep the local scalpers from getting him. Pure spite. Traded it for credit at a local toy shop. Lack of females is a big problem too.

But I’ve come to appreciate the 7” scale. I enjoy that the figures aren’t completely homogeneous. And I like that Todd does versions of characters that aren’t “classic”. I’ve been buying “classic” since 2000 and it’s worn on me.

So yeah, I like the product. I don’t really want to quit collecting, but starting over for the forth time is probably not in the cards for me. I feel like Todd is just getting started. And now it’s almost over.

Furthermore, if I’m collecting a line, many of the decisions about it, I make subconsciously. Scale, price, engineering, etc. are all baked in to me. That’s the quiet part. The part I say out loud is “OK, now what characters are you gonna make?” It is by far my biggest issue with any figure line I follow after I decide that I’m in.

JSA. Check. Todd has done a great job here. The next few months should set it in stone.

70’s Kirby. Todd has done terribly by Jack even as he spouts his admiration for him.

Titans. Pretty good IMHO. Way better than Mattel.

Multiverse characters. Also pretty good. I do love these alt characters.

Non Legacy characters like Animal Man, Deadman, etc. Decent enough. Could use Creeper, Hawk and Dove, etc.

Given more time, I’ve no doubt Todd’s character selection would’ve blown DCD and Mattel out of the water. Shame we’ll never know.

Nothing against Todd, but you're attributing Mattel reinvesting in DC to him more than the brand's renewed mass-media push?

Not at all. But he did lay the foundation for merchandise portion of the equation. Mattel left the license in ruins. How many Batmobiles did Mattel make?

The one thing I can’t seem to get pest with the DC Multiverse line is McFarlane’s unwillingness to invest in blank bucks if they’re going to reuse them ad nauseam. I mean, I get it now that the license has reverted back to Mattel, but this started a few years ago.

I thought Mirror Master looked great, but upon closer inspection, there’s that damn Speeding Bullets body with it’s character inaccurate sculpted details.

I’m not against reuse or even repaints if the costume details are correct. I like the Marvel Legends FF She-Hulk just fine. However McFarlane just painting over or pretending like the sculpted details aren’t there bugs the bejezus out of me. Maybe I’m just anal, maybe that’s just my pet peeve when it comes to action figures, or maybe I’m just plain nuts, but I will never understand how so many collectors are okay with that.

The main reason I’m looking forward to Mattel getting the license is that I feel like McFarlane simply can’t afford the license. If McFarlane had been able (or willing) to invest a little more money into the line, it could have been spectacular.

To use a Godfather analogy:
Todd is not a wartime consigliere.
Peacetime, by which I mean not a time when DC is being “pushed” hard in the public sphere? Sure, he’s a fun pick: he caters to old-old-OLD-school collectors, drums up talk with his absurd manufactured scarcity, does his narcissistic dance and makes noise.
But when it’s time for DC to “come out of the closet” and really shine? Nah, Todd’s not the one. He’s a niche guy peddling niche stuff in niche ways, and he’s centered on his own vision, not a collective vision for the characters. And yeah, he doesn’t have the resources to do what needs to be done.

So I thank him for carrying the torch, but I won’t give him credit for “saving the brand”.

Got in, got out with the bundle of Bones and Obsidian, no prob. They were even up a little early, at 11:58am.
