Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

Blu-ray Sales: July 27-August 2: Thunderbolts* Crashes the Top of the Charts

For the week that ended on August 2nd, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Thunderbolts* topped the Blu-ray-only, overall packaged media and UHD Sellers charts in its debut. The 36th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe opened in early May 2025 and naturally, it topped the box office with over $74 million. However, though it saw positive reviews and went on to make over $190 million domestically and over $382 million worldwide, those numbers still put the film in the bottom ten MCU films and behind the earlier 2025 release of Captain America: Brave New World. This week, Thunderbolts* had a strong HD share of 74%, with 39% of units sold from the 4K UHD format, enough to top the UHD Sellers chart for the week, as well.

Glad to see it's doing well on home media! Definitely lends credence to my earlier point of needing to re-evaluate what a "flop" is in this day and age. So many folks just can't afford to go to the movies on a regular basis, and so choose to go see the more well-known, established heroes. I'm sure the movie will find a new audience now, as will F4 when it gets released. I'm glad Marvel slated them both for Doomsday regardless of box office success, so they're not just gonna disappear like it seems the Eternals might/have, but I do hope we get more solo films for both teams.

I'm so tired of Ryan Reynolds

I can't tell if I'm tired of Ryan Reynolds, live-action Deadpool, or both.

Ryan Reynolds is falling into the Jamie Lee Curtis camp for me- I still like them both as people and as actors, but I can only take them in small doses anymore. Both of them have that sorta "kid in an adult's body" feel to them anymore- they're both witty and quirky and full of recent, hip references and always seem to be leading the discussion/interview no matter how many others are around.

And this all feels hypocritical to say because, as someone with ADHD, I'm more often than not the unintentionally annoying person in the room, so it's all very much in my wheelhouse (not saying Ryan or Jamie are annoying, but I digress). It's like that person at the party who's maybe had one too many and isn't fully out of control, but is maybe talking a bit too much. They're still fun, but they gotta dial it back by like 5%.

Maybe it's just a product of my growing pessimism and depression in the world at large. I've become a wrinkled, bitter old man who hates seeing others enjoy their lives and having fun. Hopefully something will come along in act 3 to make me change my ways. 😅

Anyway. Still like them both, and I wouldn't mind seeing Deadpool in the larger MCU. I think he could have some really fun interactions with some of the heroes, but it's all about who they pair him with. We already have a lot of quipsters in the MCU, we don't want it to be too grating as they battle for the spotlight.

All the quipster characters grating for the spotlight sounds like a way more entertaining scene than yet another pre-viz action sequence full of fake characters.

She-Hulk vs Deadpool in a Pitch Perfect-style quip battle!!!

I would still like to have She Hulk breaking the fourth wall, but Deadpool behind her breaking a totally different fourth wall but confused about how she is doing it as well.
