Best Spider-Man Figures

I mean I think this is about as definitive as it gets for Spider-man figures

Yea, I'm the same. I don't hate cell shading, but it's not my preferred look. If I get to choose, no cell shading always wins.

Hmm maybe it’s just me then. I’ve been buying up pretty much every scarlet spider figure since 1996 and despite the fact that we have had numerous figures casted in bright red plastic with no added detail, I’ve been able to accept them for what they were, but it didn’t change the fact that I still felt the costume was off model most of the time. The shades of reds were usually too bright and he needed the shading on his costume. My mental image of the character just isn’t complete without it. So I’m glad that Bandai took risks that other companies don’t usually take. Also they nailed the costume colors full stop. The electric blue and tomato red combo are perfect

Oh, you're definitely not alone...many seem to love cell shading. Personally, I don't care for it because shading in comics is due to it being a 2D image that they are trying to convey depth with shadows. Since a figure is 3 dimensional, having shading there just doesn't make sense to me...lighting provides shadows for 3D things. To each his own though...if you like it I'm not gonna yuck your yum...it just isn't my thing. Hope I didn't come across as a dick in my response, as that wasn't what I was going for at all.

The Spider-Man figure pool is a difficult maze to navigate. For years and years they could never seem to get Spidey just right, and then suddenly there was a flood of excellent figures of the ol' web-head to choose from. As my personal favorite I settled on RYV Spidey. I loved Retro Spidey, but RYV dethroned him as my default classic red and blue wall-crawler for few reasons I won't get ino. So, for a couple of years I thought I was out, then they dragged me back in with Maximum Spider-Man. But between the two, I can't really pick an absolute favorite. I like them both for different reasons.

But to be honest, my actual favorite Spider-Man for size and articulation is probably AF-15 Spidey. But the black and red deco and the silver-age spider symbol on his chest firmly anchor him to a particular era. But if they had offered that same figure as single carded release in a red and blue costume with a more standard spider symbol and head sculpt, that would probably be my default classic Spidey. But unfortunately they chose to release that version in an expensive 3-pack so I had to pass on it.

I’m still using the Retro one. I wanted to like the RYV one more but I just couldn’t get over its relatively massive noggin and the huge over-bold chest emblem. He’s seems a little bulky for Spidey too. The House of M Spidey’s head looks a lot better on him and matches the paint really well.

Only problem I had with the Retro was that he was all over the place design-wise. The body had really defined musculature so the sculpt looked very modern while the heads were 60s/70s Ditko/Romita Sr. The chest symbol was pretty much the 80s one. The colors and card art match the 90s. I swapped a Spider-Punk head on him and scrapped the spikes so he looks kind of like he did in the Spider-verse crossover. That one sticks with my Spider-Verse stuff.

The Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends one as-is knocks it outta the park for classic Spidey. His colors really pop and I’d absolutely buy him again if they got a good Romita Sr head and chest emblem on there.

I thought the eyes on the Retro looked a little off to be from the cartoon. I couldn't figure it out and you just placed it. I wonder what other head would work of the ones I have. I have almost all the ones on the Pizza Spidey buck...

I felt like the retro body would have made for a nice Ross Andru Spidey if only they included the web wings and the correct vintage spider logos on his costume. The one we inevitably got felt kind of half assed.

If we're talking Legends it's Max Spidey or RYV. RYV is great proportionally, but id s bit too tall IMO for Peter when compared to other Legends. Max fits that bill a lot better, but is very slim and has a terrible unmasked head. I still; prefer the Max, but since we are less likely to get the main peter variants on that buck (Outside of the Black Costume) I hesitate to say its the best.

I ended up customizing a Movie Quicksilver head for my unmasked Peter.

Why not use any of the unmasked heads that came with almost any previous Spidey? I think all of them from the past 7 to 8 years fit, or at least almost all of them do. I know the retro Peter heads fit, the animated one fits, the one from the Spidey/Kraven 2-pack fits, the one from the Spidey and Mary Jane Toys R Us 2-pack fits, and others I've forgotten fit because I've seen all of those tried in various reviews.

Mostly because i didn't like those heads.

The RYV/MJ 2 pack Peter head fits, but looks a little large on this body. It works great on the RYV, but this is much smaller and slighter, so he looks like a bobble head.
The Peter Parker head is OK once u get the glasses off, but is still a smidge large and also has those "Just saw Aunt May Naked" raised shocked eyebrows that kind of wreck it.
The head it comes with i tried to do mods on to see if i could improve it (I had 3, so I repainted one from scratch and one I just modded the eyebrows and stuff, but it didn't look very good.).
The animated series head is a great animated head, but feels specific for that version of Spider-Man. Its also designed for the AF body so felt large as well.

Meanwhile the MCU stuff tends to scale a smidge smaller on average than most legends, which made the head a little smaller. It still looked good on the Peter Parker body (And had a similar skintone) and the peg sizes were pretty close so all I had to do was deepen it and it locks down fine. I ended up really liking it, so I nabbed a couple of cheap Quicksilvers on ebay and make a head for Ben and Kaine using the ame thing so all the clones matched.

My unmasked Maximum Spider-Man has the RYV Peter Parker head and it looks great. The Instagram photo above has the age-old issue of being taken at head-level making the head look larger than it is. Those fully painted Peter Parker RYV heads are the gift that keeps on giving. I put one on the Animated Series Peter Parker body and it is my default civilian Pete. I've also got the glasses head version on a 4 pack Bruce Banner body for the Parker Industries era...

You must not like Steve Ditko's art then, and I get that because I never liked it much for the first 30+ years of my life. I don't mind it now, but as a teenager I thought his style was too messy and exaggerated.

I like Ditkos art just fine, and if the head looked like the one you posted Id be down for sure, but this isnt what it looks like.
