Mattel DC Figures

My only experience with BAFs was buying an entire wave of figures I didn't want to get Stilt-Man. I accepted it as a necessary evil because there's really no chance he'd get released solo.

So I guess if a DC BAF were one of the weirdo characters I wanted I'd be game, but if they were to BAF, like, Geo-Force, I'd flip a desk.

One of the few things I liked about McFarlane DCM was that you could complete a BAF by buying four figures. Even if I didn’t want one or two of them it was a lot better than having to buy six figures ala ML.

Pretty neutral on the BaFs. It’s fun if it’s a character I like/want. I’m pretty apathetic otherwise.

I never really liked bafs for this reason.

I guess I'm lucky.. my want list is big enough that usually the BaF is always something I want. There are some frustrations when they do split comic/MCU waves - like I had to buy three figures I didnt want to build Cho Hulk... and I have several parts of MCU Stature I don't want to have Egghead and Crossfire... but overall I like the BaF program and enjoyed it with DCU Classics as well.

If Mattel chooses to return to that model I doubt I'd be mad... unless the wave selection was like Todd's and I'd have to buy 3 different Batman figures to build a unique character.

I’m at the stage of the game where I would rather pay a premium for a BAF on eBay than be stuck with more unwanted figures to unload.

I’m pushing 60, so as others have said, Mattel is going to really have to bring it to get me to invest long term in another line.

Honestly, I’d probably be fine to call it a day with my DCUC collection, but they’re really starting to show their age both literally (UV discoloring) and figuratively (overall design). However, when it comes down to strictly character choice, they’ve pretty much got me covered.

My biggest concern with the new Mattel line (aside from overall quality) is the time it will take to build teams (be it modern or classic) with so many irons in multimedia fires and cross promotions. I’m a classic guy at heart, but I would much rather they have a contemporary comic focus than no focus at all.

It's funny, I think I'm more enthusiastic about the Mattel deal because I COMPLETELY missed DCUC. Wondering if I'm an outlier, actually. Got into collecting at the scale very late in the game. I bough into DC Icons and loved them but that line lasted what, twelve figures? Twenty? And then I tried DC Essentials and that line got abandoned hard too. McFarlane caught my attention with the first few waves but his character selection has perpetually left me wanting. And my main experience with Mattel as an adult has only been MOTU (Origins and Masterverse) so maybe I'm spoiled cos I really liked both of those lines.

I'm kind of over BAF figures, but I'd probably get sucked into them for a good DC line. At least with Marvel Legends I found that if I wanted the BAF there was always one character I'd have to buy I didn't want, but if I didn't want the BAF I'd actually want the whole wave, so there was always a "one more figure tax." But also the benefit of getting into collecting 1/12 late is even characters I super wasn't into were often ones I'd never had before, so I didn't hate the extra figure tax too much. I'd prefer to skip BAFs but I'll grumble rather than rage if Mattel does it.

Many of my favorite figures in my collection (both Marvel and DC) are due to the BAF concept. If it didn't exist, those characters likely never would have gotten made. For that reason alone I would like it to continue and come back again more broadly.

Mattel has sometimes used it in their WWE Elite line to offer supporting characters (announcers, managers, plain clothes figures etc) that wouldn't have likely sold at retail otherwise. This could be a great way for Mattel to potentially offer characters they wouldn't want to make stand alone offerings like Lois Lane, Jimmy Olsen, Perry White, Oracle, Jonathan & Martha Kent, Amanda Waller, Harvey Bullock, etc.

If that's the only way that we'd likely get those characters, then I'd happily take them that way rather than not at all.

Chemo is still one of my favorite figures on the shelf. BAF are still a draw for me, blockbuster being my no.1.
