Last Series Watched

I'm two episodes from finishing AppleTV's "Bad Monkey" and really enjoying it. Anyone else watch this? It has such a firm and delightful sense of tone and personality. Terrible title.

Also, anyone watching The Sandman? This series is fascinating and meticulously crafted - aside from some very wonky beauty fixes on the actors faces throughout. We're almost at the end but these stories and concepts are so interesting. I have not read much from the creator who shall not be named - I think I got through half of American Gods the novel? - but this show is done so well and like Dream, is never rushed.
I am extremely gutted that the creator who shall not be named gave us a reason to never name him, because Sandman blew my mind as a kid and the show has done a staggeringly elegant job interpreting the comic to screen, and once again, shitty people are why we can't have nice things, cos it is so, so well done, or at least S1 was. Haven't started S2 because my feelings on the whole thing are complicated and I am, in proper American Male Style, refusing to deal with my feelings until I have to. At least on this.

Unrelated, I'm halfway through Black Sails and I am so angry at myself for waiting this long to watch it. This show is so good.

That's on my 'to watch' list. My wife wants to watch it too, which has been the seemingly eternal impediment to ever getting to actually watch it.

I dragged my feet too and I'm mad that I did. It's fricken great. I will say I went into it thinking it was going to be Pirate Game of Thrones, but it's more Pirate Sons of Anarchy - it's subjectively terrible people trying to find a way to escape being terrible and find a bit of dignity, rather than just all murder and backstabbing, which makes me like it better. Toby Stephens should be a bigger star.

Yeah, it looks awesome. I'm actually very excited to watch it. But with my wife's condition, we only watch about 2 or 3 movies a year and maybe can finish 4-5 shows in total, including whatever new stuff is out. It's really hard to get caught up on past stuff that we missed that way. I think we're currently about 25 shows and double that amount of movies behind.

When we finish a show or a season, my wife always hates being involved in deciding the next show to binge, so I just started Better Call Saul again. Definitely one of my top three shows of all time.

I have Archer running in the background while I bring new display cases to the Dork Dungeon. It's reminding me what a banger this show was!

Archer might be one of the funniest shows I've ever watched. The writing is top notch.

My wife and I are on the younger side of the millennial generation. As such, we didn't watch The Simpsons growing up. We're not watching all 850+ episodes, but we are watching a hand-picked list of the best episodes. It's been a worthwhile exercise.

I was raised on Family Guy and raunchier Adult Swim shows. The Simpsons is chaste in comparison, which is funny considering its irreverent reputation. They're basically the all-American family. It makes me nostalgic for an America that didn't cook its collective brain on the internet.

For those curious, these are the episodes we're watching:
  1. Lisa's Substitute
  2. Mr. Plow
  3. Marge vs. the Monorail
  4. Last Exit to Springfield
  5. Cape Feare
  6. Treehouse of Horror IV
  7. Treehouse of Horror V
  8. Lisa on Ice
  9. Homer Badman
  10. Homer the Great
  11. 22 Short Films About Springfield
  12. You Only Move Twice
  13. The Springfield Files
  14. The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show
  15. Homer's Enemy
My wife abhors animation, so she's been a good sport for participating at all. If I can convince her to watch a couple more episodes, I'm looking at Homer the Heretic and Deep Space Homer.

So many good Simpsons episodes out there. Really, so many good 5-30 second bits that have stuck with me all these years.

It’s funny, I was a freshman in high school when the show became popular and I remember Simpsons shirts being banned. “Eat my shorts” and “I’m Bart Simpson, who the hell are you?” tees were just too much for them. This was a public school btw.

Speaking of “adult animation” I’m three episodes into the King of the Hill revival. It’s weird- it’s like eating a comfort food you haven’t had in years. Not quite as good as you remembered because the recipe changed a bit, but it’s close enough that you’ll go in for seconds.

Finished Sandman S2. Really very well done. I didn't know where it was heading, but I really liked the ambition of this show and how much they did achieve.

They could do so much more, but I think this is a great place to stop - no diminishing returns.
