Best Spider-Man Figures

I've been going back and catching up on some Spiderman figures I missed over the last couple years. Mainly because I thought "ehh, the ones I have ate good enough." Then I saw some comparisons so now I'm starting to go grab some of them. Most of them are reasonably priced if you find some good deals. But I do have questions.

Which is the best Spiderman figure of Peter? I've been looking at both the RYV and Retro. The Retro looks like what I want cause its closer to the 90s cartoon. But both of those are so expensive. May as well buy the Max Spidey. I'm just not sold on the price of that figure yet.

I got Ben Reilly, the blue one. Why are his eyes so small? I always thought Ben had some big ass eyes on his mask. Is there another head I could look into that looks better? Although I do remember the old old old Ben Reilly with the baby blue tint and shitty articulation also had small eyes I think. But most of the source material they even look larger. And I'm also wondering what a good unmasked head would be for him. Requiring paint for his hair most likely. Also, so the old heads fit the new body? The engineering is a little different but I can't imagine its too far off.

I also bought the Retro Symbiote Spidey and Chasm, both of which will be here next weekish. I was debating on the Secret Wars versions of Symbiote, but I went with the Retro cause it looks closer to the 90s cartoon as well.

Also looking to maybe pick up Hallows Eve and maybe a couple other random characters. Maybe some B list villains. But none of them really jump out at me as being necessary. And they didn't really invoke "ooh I want that" in me.

Also nabbed the new Flash Venom and Scarlet Spider. Both are really nice. I just wish Venom had some tendrils coming out the back like the old one and some different guns. I gave mine a giant assault rifle from Vala, and he kept the laser pistol, even though it likes to fall out of the holster. Not sure if I'll give him anything else.

Any additional comments besides answers would be cool. I kinda wanna make this a straight up Spiderman discussion where people give me some ideas and info about their likes and dislikes and why. Especially about the Peter figures. Cause there are so many, and none of them are cheap.

I have owned most of these and more. If you are between RNV and Retro, I'd go Retro.

I prefer those colours, but RYV has a horribly executed ball peg head that floats and looks detached in many poses. I abhor it.

At that price and this point in time, just get Maximum. Why pay same or even more for less?

I prefer the Secret Wars black suit to the retro. Just more fun to pose and feels better. I get the bulkier appeal of the retro, but it was an easy drop since I don't really double up costumes like that.

Old heads do fit the new bodies, but proportions may vary. I use the RNV head on Maximum and SW black suit.

I have the retro black costume and like that one a lot. I'm waiting to have a bit of stockpiled Amazon credit to nab the RYV Spidey. I'd go for the retro one, but I cannot stand a Spidey that doesn't have wall crawling hands.

I had Pizza Spidey for a while and he's not terrible, but I think the RYV buck is an overall improvement. I don't have Maximum because I'm just not that big into Todd's style. It'll probably be another year before a classic Spidey release again and it seems even money that will be the Maximum body but with none of the accessories. We'll see what the paint looks like on it. Still think I might like the RYV body better for looks.

I've also got the retro 2099 (pizza Spidey body) and while that was good at the time, I hope the rumor of a new one coming out is true. I'd love to get Miguel on the RYV body with accurate colors (he's supposed to have a black and red suit, but like Pete people misunderstood the coloring and it got bluer or more purple over time).

I found a Retro Spidey on Ebay for $35, and the seller sent me an offer for less, so all in all, it was $31 and change. I feel like that isn't a bad deal. It is loose, but it comes with everything and I saw the paint before I bought it. It's not awful, but I may need to fix a few spots. And paint the pins. I'll have to wait till it gets here first though lol. I'm hoping its also not a knockoff, not that the knockoff is apparently any worse. But it's a US seller, so I'm sure it'll be fine. I may end up picking up the Max one later anyway, but not at $50. Still needing another head for Ben Reilly though. He needs bigger eyes. Maybe I'll see how the old one fits after I dig it out lol.

Just Legends? Probably the animated two-pack that came with Vulture. Allowing for the subjectivity of favoring one style over another, I think that one is probably best. If we're going outside Legends then I still think the MAFEX Spidey is the best Spider-Man figure so far. It's not perfect and I don't know that it's so much better than the best Legends figures that it's worth the expense, but if I had to trim the collection down to one Spider-Man that's the one I'd probably go with.

Maximum is best, but stylized as others mentioned. A lighter color scheme with a Romita Sr/Jr head on that body will become an instant default.

For a classic Spider-Man I use the Amazing Friends 3 pack version. Was hoping the classic costume would get a single release on that body and there were rumors for Secret Wars wave 2...

I got a few SDCC RAFT Spider-Men back in the day, in my mind the Pizza body releases are all basically irrelevant, so I put the heads on a Retro red/blue and a Ben Relly Spider-Man. Those kitbashes still hold up for me.

RYV is essentially my modern Spider-Man. The head isn't the best and he's a little too big for my ideal representation of Spidey.

Anything late 90s and 2000s era I use the Retro blue/red Spidey with the smaller white eyes. Reminds me of how Finch drew him in New Avengers. That Retro release is still great, just needs to be pinless. Proportions are still way better than RYV.

I got Chasm and Symbiote Spidey. They are really really nice. Pinless would've been good for Chasm just cause of the color mismatch, but I'll eventually fix it myself. Still, I am quite pleased with them. Symbiote has some crooked paint on his back, but I may try to fix it. I won't be looking at his back much anyway lol. Now for the Retro. Should be here later this week.

This is my elitist answer, too.

This thread has reminded me of the awesome Spider-Man classics line and how we need a Legends update on the Weiringo Spidey.

And F4, F it.
While not technically Legends, there was some re-use between the lines and it really did start the whole Legends revolution - it would be nice to see the wave honored in some way. Single card Maximum Spider-Man, single card Daredevil, battle damaged Spider-Man... brand new Man-Spider...

So I finally got the Retro Spidey in. I must say, hes really cool. The pins suck, but I knew that going in. I'll paint them at some point. I also like the colors. I noticed his left and right web lines don't match up on his arms. But I looked online and most of them are like that, to varying degrees. So that's also a bummer. I'm not really worried about the no wall crawling hands because I'm sure I have a set from another Spidey that would work if I care enough to use them. The lack of a Parker head is the real lucky part. And they made one for this figure too. Its just in the Smythe/Parker box, lol. Anyway, after I paint his pins this is my default Spidey.

Right now, RYV is my default Spidey in the main display, as he has the Romita Sr. look I grew up with. That having been said, I wish he had better articulation, and I actually prefer the MAFEX overall (I have him in my cubicle at work, since I like to pose and play around with him when I'm on boring calls). At some point, I'm sure RYV will move to the Spider-Verse shelf and be replaced by something I like even more.

I don't have Maximum Spidey, as I just didn't feel he was worth the price tag, but if I find him marked down at some point I'll consider adding him to my collection. The McF look isn't my favorite for Spidey, though that figure nails that look for sure (some say the MAFEX does, but to my eye he is far more Mark Bagley inspired).

What do you mean about the web lines not matching up?

Look at the forearms. On his left, the web line is basically on the same spot as the elbow cut. On his right arm, the web line is in the middle of the elbow cut. And it throws the rest of the arm lines off because it's misaligned. I'm not sure which arm is supposed to be proper, but the one I own is like this picture, which is not mine. And all the ones I saw on Ebay were the same, with varying degrees of how far up on the right arm the red also goes to that elbow joint. Most of the left arms i saw were fairly close to the one I have and this picture, so I think the right arm may have been where it fucked up. The chest lines also don't always match up with where the blue and red come together to seperate them. Its just Hasbro paint apps being Hasbro paint apps. It just sucks that I can see it easily since I notice things like that, my brain will almost instantly tell me if something isn't symmetrical.

Peter Parker civilian best is the animated 2-pack that comes with Smythe. Best comic one is fairly obviously the retro Peter with the goofy glasses head and the SUBLIME half Spidey, half Peter head. That is one of the best Spidey head sculpts ever made, and I'm surprised it's the only one I'm aware that's ever been done.

Best Legends Spidey is Maximum. Don't overthink the price; if you're passing him up you're passing up the surefire Legends figure of the year and possibly the best version ever made in twelfth scale.

Across all lines and source material I'm not as sure because I'm not a huge Spider-Verse guy, but the Sentinel Spider-Man does look incredible but I can't compare because I don't own it. If it's not the Sentinel then it's either Maximum Spidey or one of the Mafex Spideys, and for now I lean towards Maximum because the articulation is better. I have all of the Mafex versions and they're all functionally equivalent for the most part, but either the classic version, symbiote version, or the Scarlet Spider version are probably the best and it's hard to choose between them since personal preference plays so heavily into choosing between those. Objectively it's probably classic Spidey since he matches the most versions out there. You could also say Symbiote Spidey because he comes with that VERY cool web backpack accessory that no other Spidey I own has that can be used with pretty much any other Spidey figure ever made.
