DC Studios Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

Well... That would be kinda amazing really. I've NOT been crazy about any of the Batman costumes, but would still love Year One to be on screen.

Edit: left out the important "not" part of that!

I had to listen to it twice to make sure I didn't miss something. What a noncommittal answer.

I wonder why "Everything DCU" thought that was worth singling out into its own clip.

I just really don’t think blue works onscreen, ESPECIALLY with other heroes around.
Black, please. Maaaaaybe some blue for a flashback of the “Dick Grayson as Robin the Teen Wonder” years. But for early years, and for anything post-Jason Todd, BLACK.

I know he's always in all black in the movies but I'd really like some grey. Affleck's Batman got the closest for me, but that symbol was too Dark Knight Returns for me.

I didn't like any of these really.

But something along these lines:

And this is just perfect:

But if they went blue and grey, I'd be cool with it just because it's so different from all the black we've had on screen.

And still a fan of the Dead End suit:

Any of those you showed would be great Ru. Especially that middle piece of art. I will say though, I do love the 89, 92, and 2016 Batman attires. I think all 3 of those were awesome. But they could still do better.

it always kills me for a fan made film how great everyone looks and is portrayed in that Dead End film. It is insanely good. Batman, The Joker, The Predators. they all look menacing and cool.

I’m totally fine with grey for the bodysuit. Just black for the gloves/boots/cape/cowl/TRUNKS (if bodysuit is grey, I want trunks).

I should say that I think the Batfleck suit is excellent and really the one movie suit I truly love.

Well... okay, I admit the Keaton ones I love for nostalgia and the movies themselves. And I love the Nolan movies, but as far as putting a figure on the shelf, none of those really work for me on their own merit.

SERIOUSLY.

Who knew Growing Pains' Boner would make such a fantastic Joker?

Just so long as it isn’t bullet proof Batman I’m good.
Yes!!

I hate bulletproof Batman, slightly more than I hate "it makes sense for him to wear armor" arguments. My idea of Batman is that if the thugs get off any shots at him, he's already failed as Batman.

I know that the muzzle flash tunnel scene from the Batman trailer was supposed to be badass, but come on.

Also, looking more into Sandy Collora (who directed Dead End), I remembered he did World's Finest before WB, heh.

Thing is, Batman has canonically worn Kevlar or the equivalent since at least the 80s. The problem, for me, is when it is OBVIOUS that he is wearing armor.

I don't mind a more grounded looking Batman. I love Battinson's suit because it does look very tactical and practical. I've always oddly been a "buckles and pouches" kind of guy, though- it just looks cool to me. I like Affleck's BvS suit in theory, but it just looks so big and bulky and costumey to me (though I did really dig what they did to change his voice in the costume- a voice changer is a good idea I wouldn't mind seeing a comeback in some form). I prefer almost any of his other looks- I quite like his Justice League suit for that reason too- it looks like what a real human would wear to keep up with all these superpowered demigods. Truth be told, I don't really mind what the DCEU Batman looks like- it would be nice to see the grey/blue combo, but if they want to offset Superman's colors a bit, I wouldn't be mad at grey/black, all black, whatever. The darker his suit, the easier time he has blending in to the shadows.

The one thing I do really hope to see his his cool drape-y cape. I saw a video the other day of a practical cape that does the really cool pull-in thing that happens like when he goes from crouching to standing in the Animated Series. If Batman is gonna be dark and broody, he needs to do the superhero equivalent of a depressed emo high schooler hiding in their hoodie.

Batman, “emo”?
Ooooh, them’s fightin’ words! 🤣

But yes he needs a drapey cape, so that he can be the dramatic *goth* that he is. I don’t know what superhero I’d call “emo”, but it ain’t the Bat.

[insert complicated history here of goths being called “emo” and really, REALLY hating it]

I certainly should apologize for it. My mom, sister, and nibling all have a punk, goth, and emo aesthetic respectively. I'm the only one in my direct family that went moreso to the "light" side of things, being a nerdy dweeb of a guy (though I do share their love for dark, spooky things). Anyway, my sister and nibling especially HATE it when I get their styles mixed up, but it's become one of those things, like OCD or ADD, that's just become synonymous with a certain style or mindset and way overused in the incorrect context.

That said, depending on how you personally define each one, I think you could describe Batman as any of the 3- punk, emo, or goth- and they'd all fit fairly well. But that's coming from someone close to, but not directly on the inside of, the respective communities. I guess the best descriptor of Batsy is just "brooding".

I'll do my Batman spiel which I'm sure others have heard here before. I'll try to be brief. It does affect how his costume should look (in my ideal world anyway) bc in a film the visuals should relate directly to things like character and theme. Anyway (roll your eyes) and here we go.

I don't really vibe with any live action Batman. I mean I have warm feelings towards Batman 66 but certainly don't think of them as "good" in any meaningful way. I do certainly like elements of some of them. The 2nd Burton movie has really fun art design, Ledger's Agent of Chaos Joker performance is really good. The main reason I don't really connect to them in whole is because they all miss the character (or at the least the most interesting aspect of the character to me) of Batman. They all rightly understand that Batman is as much a monster story as it is a superhero story. One where Batman himself too is a monster. "I will become something they fear" and all that. Become a monster to fight monsters; you get the idea. He very much is a classic gothic revival monster ala Universal or Hammer; (Yes gothic; not emo; not punk) The directors don't play him as the right one though.

Burton's Batman is a slow moving stiff creature that keeps coming. You can shoot him and he keeps coming. Unkillable. He's essentially Frankenstein. An unstoppable determined force; essentially an undead bulltet proof Batman. Nolan's Batman is all wild rage. A growling animal; seething with violence who prowls Gotham. He's essentially the Wolfman. Batman is neither of these classic monsters; its obvious who he is ... long black cape, bat on his chest. Batman is Dracula. His violence isn't a slow inevitable plod; nor is it animaliistic rage. Its a spirit that lurks in the shadows then erupts in quick controlled bursts.

What does this have to do with how he's dressed? The moving part of the moving picture is very important. Not just bc it is silly genre fun (which it is) but because it exposes character and theme. Batman quitely slips in and out of the shadows. That is his primary armor. Not costumes he can't move in or clank around. Batman's cape isn't a Nolan plotdevice or something to crumble up behind him b/c he's embarrassed of the source material. Its part of his character; you embrace it; silliness and all.
