Comic creators RIP thread

Man 2025 has not been kind to comic creators. Rest in peace to all of them.

As to Jim Shooter, let's also give him a nod for his contribution to GI Joe. I mean they even gave him official/unofficial OG14 status. That and getting Larry Hama on Joe are big milestones.

I don't recall reading much of his writing, but his editing and behind the scenes were work were pretty phenomenal, and as Matt said he was a major player for Marvel in one of their best periods.

I wouldn't be me if I didn't mention Jim Shooter's "No gays in the Marvel universe" policy. He has a complicated legacy given how successful Marvel was under his stewardship.

John Byrne snuck in Northstar right under ol' Jim's nose. Not sure how he missed that. :D
Did Claremont's long run of queer-coding tons of characters overlap with Shooter's run as EIC? Claremont is not without his missteps but being able to look at hundreds of issues of comics and go "I see what you're doing, Chris" hiding representation in plain sight is pretty fascinating.

AFAIK, the X books sold so well that they were able to do their own thing. They had X office oversight, but not much Marvel oversight.

Claremont pushed as many boundaries as he could. Storm's "friend" Yukio, Illyana's "friend" Kitty, Juggernaut's "friend" Black Tom, etc. Gay-coded Pyro literally got mutant AIDS.

If Memory serves, Chris started on X-Men the same year as Jim's appointment.

I should know this stuff but I think I was just young enough at the time I was just enjoying comics for comics sake. Claremont's Uncanny was what made little kid superhero fan Doc realize that reading print comics was even BETTER than cartoons.

While we're being negative about him--and fairly so--I think it should also be mentioned that he was the one who brought us Valiant Comics and in doing so brought back the dormant Gold Key characters, and a lot of fantastic stories and artists while there.

Aw man there goes another comic great this year. Secret Wars is what got me into collecting comics again. Kept it up until the early 90's.
Some amazing stories during that time that I still cherish today. Appreciated that Jim communicated with the fans a bit like Stan did. He will be missed. RIP Jim
