G.I. Joe Classified Series: The Chatty Pointless Thread & Performance Art

I never even saw the movie but I think the Snake Eyes is an excellent figure - he's the sort of Snake Eyes that if someone were, say, a new collector pissed off at not being able to get the first Classified version, the movie one can stand in JUST fine.

(I also think the likenesses on Baroness and Scarlett are not strong enough to the actresses that they can stand in for both characters, too, though. Storm Shadow isn't awful but he kind got the boring end of the stick with costume design.)
I agree with all of this, except...I never like Baroness's hair. I feel nitpicky about it but Baroness with anything but the long hair feels incorrect to me. I also didn't see the movie, but do like the Snake Eyes design, and even had Scarlett as my Scarlett until I got the retro figure. I keep considering Storm Shadow maybe as a new character but yeah, really bland. Somehow the classic design works way better despite being kinda AS bland on paper.

Okay, I do use movie Baroness as like Baroness's long lost punk-ass younger sister or cousin or something. She does need the perfect long hair to truly be Baroness. But I also have a soft spot for angry women with choppy black hair and glasses. I'm an easy mark.

When I had a stuck hip on my original white Storm Shadow I was going to use the movie one as a stand-in... but he ALSO had a stuck hip. Goddamn, those early waves...

I'll take a pinless Snake remake in v1 or anything because regardless of looks, pinless is sturdier and doesn't bow out. At least in my climate and shelf.

Whenever I get an update it's night and day and worth it.

That makes total sense. I do like the figure and love her as a different character.

Goddamn indeed! I think my original SS had a hip problem, but he is one I posed after opening and haven't messed with since.

My SS just felt like it was going to break on any joint. And yellowed immediately on the knees.

Never did find the retro.

Surprised we haven't had a sidegrade for Storm or og Destro even if it's just a Classified reissue with tweaks.

Same! I would probably go for both if they did something even closer to the originals, or comic/cartoon looks or something. All of which are planned for the One A Day poll heh.

I ended up getting a functional Destro second-hand (maybe the seller put in the work to get the hip to ratchet clean? Never asked) but it took work. I'm a little surprised they haven't reissued him yet, but now that the big ticket Destro item is out I wonder if that means they'll open the gates to a new version of the silver mask, too.

I like the retro one but would like something like the original card art that looks more like a non-emotive mask.

It's just part of my old Evergreen supply fantasy. I've met people that would be interested in this line or Marvel or whatever but they can't get the specific figure that I showed them so they have no gateway and tap out then.

But I'm sure they know what they're doing

Well, especially when the popular or "main" characters do have several versions from the original line, and beyond. Like, do we really need a Renegades Rock N Roll? Probably not. But a Renegades Storm Shadow? Some characters should get a new figure at least every other year, which I think keeps it from getting too Wolverinee, especially when it's, what, a dozen or so characters you keep in rotation rather than a few.

Right there with you with the on-ramp characters. I think the only line that truly does it well is Marvel Legends because while long-time collectors are always pissed that there's a ANOTHER Wolverine, Spider-Man, or Deadpool in a wave, Legends seems to be aware that there should always be a Spider-Man, Wolverine, or Deadpool to buy somewhere to hook the new buyer. Actually I think MOTU is pretty good at this, too, making sure there's always a He-Man and Skeletor on the shelves and usually a Teela and Man-at-Arms in the pipeline.

(Side-eyeing McFarlane because it's possible to have too many Batmans and not enough everyone else.)

I guess with Joes the original concept of the line was to always be shufflin' new characters in to get kids to buy new toys, but I think that's a concept they should probably abandon for modern creators. I just don't know who the "always available" characters should be limited. Snake Eyes and Cobra Commander for sure. Maybe Duke/Scarlett and Destro/Baroness? Arguments to be made for different characters cos we all have different on-ramps to the line. I'm sure a lot of folks on the board would call Shipwreck an always-available character, or Cobra Blueshirts maybe.

Well... I imagine I'm counted in that group, and rightfully so.

But like Alt said, there's probably a different on-ramp every wave or two based on ages of the fans. Some would argue there should be a Salvo on the pegs every year. Falcon and Jinx could be to some what Flint and Lady Jaye are in my eyes. Spirit feels crucial to me, and regretfully... Duke. Hawk, Stalker, Beach Head, Gung-Ho all feel like big standouts that were frequently featured on the cartoon. The comic did a great job of rotating in new characters throughout, and showcasing a lot of them somewhat equally, but Snake Eyes, Scarlett, Stalker, Storm Shadow, Cobra Commander, Zartan, Baroness, Destro, and the Dreadnoks seemed to remain in the spotlight throughout, even when some of those hadn't had a new figure in years.

Yeah, even discussions of Joes here reveals all the layers of parfait strata people existed in.

This all makes Joes that much harder to have always available characters. Even back in the old days, the way they made characters repeatedly available was with repaints, which worked for kids (Tiger Force Flint will always be my favorite flint cos I had him longest!) but modern collectors are going to push back on not getting their perfect collection with the precise version of the character they identify with.

(By comparison, there's always a Wolverine available, he is probably not the Wolverine YOU want, but it's an impulse buy to get someone in the door. House of M Spidey was released to stick a cheap Spidey in there to oil the gears. Sometimes He-Man has a gimmick like Thunder Punch but he'll do, for now, I guess... I think Joes collectors are more persnickety. Except maybe if there's always a mostly-black Snake Eyes with both swords AND guns as your first hit to buy in on the line.)
