Star Trek

The proportions and bicep cut are wack.

At least Sulu looks good.
Bicep cuts are wack... but so were DSTs... not that its a defense... just means they have not improved.

I've pulled out Weyoun and MM Archer. Weyoun Looks good as well to me... but the head ball... and in fact many joints on all these figures are pretty loose... the Head sculpt on MM Archer is the horror I expected. But my Kit Bash of that figure (Archer head on AA Kirk casual uni... isn't great either. I really want the AA head on the Nacelle body as the body sculpt is very nice! A may have to get my dremmel out and see what I can do.

Here's a side by side of my archer kit bash and the Nacelle Archer. This is easily the most disappointing figure of the series. The sculpt just isn't there IMO. The body is great... but my AA kit bash isn't standing up to time very well either.

Looks more like Darren McGavin than Scott Bakula...
Archers head sculpt is a complete miss for sure...

On the other hand... Valkris may be an unexpected favorite. The paint apps on the head still suffer the same issue as the entire wave, however, the body and head tones match nicely, and though the detail promised in the promo shots aren't there... its hard to complain too much for a character that got maybe 5 min of screen time... and the genesis device pack in is really very nice!

I've got Valkris on PO thru BBTS to get the Genesis Device and Console for my HiyaTreks; but now I'm wondering if/how many deco pieces I could pull off her for an 18th custom. Either I use her for fodder or I chuck her out the window at the school bus-stop so a kid can have her like I do with the rest of the 12th figures I don't need.

Hmm...

They didn't get the details on the eyes, but they got something detailed on her.
I mean... I kinda think I should make little bags to put on the heads of all the figures in this wave... cause everything from the head down is pretty good!

All the accessories that come with these figures are very nice. Sulu probably came out best of the lot... and I really haven't decided to even open Tuvix yet. Based on these I def scaled back what I pre-ordered for wave 2 to just Nog, T'pol, and Lt Valeris. Kirk is clearly the "deluxe" figures of the wave... that is if you want a horsey... which I do not. If Nacelle can show they got the head issue fixed in wave 2 I could be back all in for wave 3 especially since it gets an update on a complete bridge crew, but if not I guess I'll settle for the Nurse Chapel and Yomen Rand we never got from DST.

If there's one figure to buy strictly for the accessories its Valkris.

Not that I'm up for it, but I wonder if the head could be stripped and painted proper... alternatively... someone that want to make few bucks 3d printing and selling replacement heads might do allright.

Definitely there was a problem with the heads, some of the sculpts are a bit off from the renders, and the paint apps were poorly applied. It is odd as the bodies all look good to me both in terms of sculpt and paint.

Got my Nacelle figures today and I love them! As everyone has stated, the accessories are amazing. The bodies and articulation, all good. I’m not an articulation junkie and none of these guys are doing martial arts, so I have no complaints here.

I’m even happy with most of the heads. Valkris is clearly missing some paint apps, but I had to look at the renders to really pinpoint what was missing. Others like Sulu, Tuvix and Weyoun look great. Even Archer looks much better in person, no Muppet here.

My biggest issues are with Garrett and Jellico, the paint apps around the eyes are too heavy, it looks like they were both punched in the face. I wonder if they are all this way or just mine? I may try to get replacements on these.

I get that that these may be lacking for the modern day collector who prioritizes the art of the action figure over the character, but for me, world building is priority #1 and I’m happy to collect figures of different styles (and subjective) quality. I think Nacelle succeeded in creating a line that is a clear evolution of DST, with similar aesthetics but more modern articulation, sculpting and awesome accessories. Compare that to Playmates attempt a few years back, where they tried to create a line that was intended to be a successor to their own original line, but failed on both counts, resulting in mediocre figures that brought nothing new while having very little ties back to the original.

I don’t know if there are really enough Star Trek action figure collectors to keep this line going, but fingers crossed that they keep making these for a while, because I want all of them.

I think they are all this way. Sorry to say the "rouge" app on Garrett makes her look like cheap working girl.

This is a good question! Obviously collectors are driven by interest in the franchise and even though it's behind the Paramount paywall, new Trek does seem to be doing well, but does it translate into new collectors? And are there enough collectors that want to plunk down almost $30 a figure?

While the deep cuts like Tuvix and Generations Sailors are fun, based on the effort of Wave 1, collectors like me are going to be waaay more cautious. Wave 2 is slated for 10 figures, and I'm only in for 3 based on the quality of wave 1... and I will say 8 of the 10 would have been an easy "yes" for me and, well... in for 8 then why not get the whole wave.

To get new collectors I think they need to do new shows... I'd love Strange New Worlds or even lower decks animated style figures... but they gotta figure out how to get the head sculpts right or I'm not a buyer. Same for upcoming wave 3, the entire bridge crew of TOS is a no brainer... but not if the head sculpts are worse than AA and AA put out some really good figures for its time! I could see myself begrudgingly only getting two figures in that wave. If by some miracle they get to wave 4 and stilll haven't figured out the head sculpts I think I'll be done.

Actually going back to new shows, maybe Nacelle really should refocus on something like Lower Decks... animated characters may be easier for them to render.

Glad to hear this!

This is what got me interested as well - these first two waves supplement what I already have with some desired characters. I am not all in as I am trying to downsize a bit and avoid character variants, but the accessories like the aquarium made me buy Jellico and really wanted Peter.

NECA did well when they did the Simpsons Celebrity series in the same scale as Playmates, so there is precedent to "continue" a line in the same scale and aesthetic. I think if we could see the sale numbers, there may be way more DST/AA Trek figures made than we realize. A decent portion of that base might be enough to match the sales of most boutique lines at this point.

I think $30 is not far above the norm anymore for prices especially for fan channel type lines. The strategy of starting off with Waves 1 and 2 as a continuation of DST/AA, get the kinks worked out, then hit with a full bridge crew (and bridge) - that could be a huge hit if they can get the likenesses down.

Yes, they have made it harder for themselves by Wave 1 not being a full home run. I admit my enthusiasm has dropped a bit, but I am still on board and prepared to go all in on Wave 3....

Agreed - I hope they can pull this off, I think that Wave 3 will be the true make or break for them. I would think it they want to go for the newer Paramount+ shows, then they would start with the Picard show - if that doesn't sell with a mix of new characters and legacy characters then I doubt the others might.
