You know I never considered WD-40. Is that shock oil under a different name? That's way more of a household staple.

They are not the same.
WD-40 eats away at plastic over time. Shock oil, which has more in common with something like a throat seal or even vegetable oil, does not.

I've been using Dawn the past few years. Little drip, work the joint, set it aside for a few hours. Takes everything to factory perfect for me.

I’ve never had any issues with it eating plastic, but I understand it can destabilise paint applications so I’ve only used it sparingly inside an internal socket or unpainted joint usually

Most people don't seem to have - but it is a listed as a side effect and if you talk to your local rep and ask them if they recommend using it as a lubricant between plastic elements, they will tell you absolutely do not do that. So while it's maybe a small chance of it causing damage, it's enough of a chance that the manufacturer won't recommend doing it. So always worth mentioning.
