Marvel Legends Maximum Series

I feel like I’m about the only person who’s low key looking forward to getting Hulk. I did find him with about a 20% discount off RRP, which helped.

I didn’t bother with Spidey, and I get the arguments that Hulk offers very little that’s new. But something about a nice bright green Hulk still gets my radar pinging. I’m planning to tweak the grinning head into a Capcom Hulk, and the other 2 into some more classic looks, so maybe it’s the custom challenge I’m anticipating.

I think ultimately though, I needed something to quench the drought. I don’t buy Gamerverse or MCU, and I only pick very sparingly from the mutants, so it’s been a very quiet few months. Guess I just needed that fix…

I’m with you. Honestly, I think he looks pretty great in general and agree that they nailed the colorway. I don’t really care about the thunderclap so won’t be putting him in a pose that compromises the soft torso. I think that decision also enhances the aesthetic by hiding the butterfly cuts.

I also skipped Max Spidey and have no regrets (I can’t see a Marvel Legend Spidey ever replacing the Mafex 185 Spidey in my collection).

I’m looking forward to him too!! It’s really only the McGuinness head that I *hate*, and the colors and build are great. Jury is out on the chest, I guess, but it looks fine in pictures.
I’m just hungry for Hulk stuff. Hulk is easily my favorite of the characters that have been lumped into “MCU Avengers” in the movies, and he’s got nowhere near enough figures in modern ML. I miss the days of full Hulk waves.

Have we ever gotten a Hasbro Marvel Legends version of the Peter David '90s Hulk?

I'm not really a Hulk fan but that is my mind's eye Hulk. He was like smart Hulk then right? I just don't recall seeing that particular portrait/ hairstyle over the years.

Nope. And we NEEEEEEEED him.

Preferably a version that’s got the black a-shirt, brown slacks, and swappable shoes/bare feet/BUNNY SLIPPERS.

And huge guns.

That's one of the few TB MLs I kept when I started clearing them out years ago.

My Hulk was delivered this morning, but I'm off to work, so won't be able to open him up until tomorrow morning before I go to work.
Preternia shared some pics on Twitter of this Hulk with the 80th head. It fits, but the green is a little darker from what I can see.

Regarding reviews:

I don't have any respect for any kind of star-based or numeric review system. They're always arbitrary, and meaningless without context. And the video or written review -is- the context, so why toss on the numeric system? It's stupid. So I always ignore the final 'rating' a product gets. I want to know the 'why.'

I'm torn on what kind of reviews I want to watch. I like stuff like D_Amazing and Robo specifically because they're upbeat and just want to have fun with toys. In terms of a video review, I can usually see if there's any issues that are going to bother me even if the reviewer doesn't specifically lay into that problem. But I also like someone that's very critical of a product and does call out the issues directly, as long as they're also showing what's good or neutral about it and letting me still get a full picture of what the product is like. I think Johnny Nostalgia is really good for being fairly objective (although I also think sometimes his priorities are different from mine, so I don't always agree with him - and that's perfectly okay).

That being said; overly negative reviews are a chore to get through. I understand where it can come from. Some people can't help it. I, myself, tend to be a negative person by default and I have to put effort into trying to balance that side of myself and present more positively where I can (it helps when I just really like something - but even then I will tend to focus a bit more on what I don't like about it). But 'I tend to focus on the negative' is still very different from 'I complain nonstop to the point where I mostly just post videos so I can whine like a little bitch all the time.' That's a reviewer I just don't want to watch. So there's a balance to be had.

And to be fair, I also don't want a positive reviewer that glosses over problems or refuses to even talk about them. Or worse - outright lies and pretends they aren't problems. ToyBro is like that. Dude stopped reviewing S7 either because they stopped sending him free shit or because they were so bad that he struggled to glaze for them, but in his time with them he definitely openly lied. I watched him talk about solid joints while the figure flopped around in his hand. Dishonest as fuck, and probably because he was directly benefiting from misleading his viewers, not because he genuinely loved the product so much that he didn't notice faults.

So yeah, don't be a whiny bitch, and don't be a dishonest lying shill. You wouldn't think those would be such steep hills to climb, but....

RIP Peter David. I was all in on his Hulk run, and many of his other 90s works. I met him at a con years ago. Another of my favorite comic book talents who will be missed.

Nope I'm pumped for him! Not ideal exactly, but I love Hulk and there's a lot to like here. Big, colorful, fin missile thing and some super comic-y heads. Can't wait to see how Deadpool rounds out the year's offerings. I ordered Hulk off Pulse and hope he ships in a week or so.

Sooo I just opened Max Hulk and I . . . love him. I like all the heads better in person especially the “big teeth” head. The chest overlay feels pretty sturdy so far. He’s fun, bright and expressive. Worth the $$? Dunno. But he’s very cool.

The chest feels like the rubber bulb you squeeze repeatedly on those blood pressure cuffs. Best way I can describe it. Soft enough that you can squeeze it, but it pops right back into shape. It’s thicker rubber than those bulbs. Doesn’t feel like plastic. It’s softer than any ML cape.

It’s also hollow, to a degree. There’s what feels like a lot of room under the pecs before you get to the interior structure of the torso that houses the butterfly joints. Probably could press the skin down a quarter of an inch before feeling hard plastic. It’s only like that in the front, the back is flush with the interior torso.

The thunder clap ability is a nice touch. But is hardly the move I need the Hulk to be making in a display. Glad the swooshing effects can work on the back of both the clap hands and the fists, and probably the grip hands. I think the clap hands could be used for a push motion, but they’re not the most versatile.

The heads are not my favorite. The open mouth scream (McGuinness?) looks like his lower jaw is dislocated. The toothy head exaggerates their size way too much. (Which artist is being represented here?) The slick hair grin head (Keown?) is easily the best head and the one I’ll be keeping on him, designating him as my ‘90s Hulk.

The greens and purples are beautiful. The articulation works. Though I can’t believe they didn’t give him a hinge neck, it’s the same ball/socket set up that limits the range on previous Hulk figures, one of my biggest pet peeves. I’m trying to be as objective as I can about this figure. I like it, but it really isn’t as special as the label on the package, nor the price, wants it to be.

All right, playing around a bit more today, and I’m feeling more frustration.

The neck range being so limited is a problem that should have been fixed. He can’t look up. That is a problem. There’s no acceptable reason for this in 2025.

The clap hands are growing on me. Can be used for running poses, push or carry poses, not just the thunder clap. This should benefit toy photographers, but I’m not one of those.

The impact effect of the thunder clap is weird. It’s shaped like a C-clip. But he’s supposed to hold it between his clap hands? It doesn’t make sense, unless it’s meant to be repurposed for something else eventually. It just falls out because there’s nothing for it to grip to. I’m open to explanation.

The toe articulation messes with his stability. On a figure this large and heavy, those joints should be tighter or should ratchet. It’s challenging to get him into a dynamic bent toe pose that can still support his weight.

His boobs are more hollow than I explained, there’s probably a half inch of space between the rubber skin and the butterfly joint. I think I would have preferred the cuts in the torso. The squished pecs probably look better, but functionally, it’s one of those innovations they took a chance on that shouldn’t be repeated. This is a Toy Biz move.

So the heads are based on Dale Keown (grinning), Ed McGuinness (screaming), and Mike Deodato (overgrown teeth). I rank them in that order from “easy favorite” to “will never display” with a big gap between Keown and McGuinness.

I can relate here. It's way easier to talk about what's wrong with a figure most of the time than what is right because usually what is good about a figure is apparent just by looking at it. We know what a good double-jointed elbow should look like and what it should do to the point where it feels almost pointless to point it out, but when one is bad it jumps out. It's doubly hard when the criticism is all in text. I don't talk about toys with anyone in my personal life and I don't go on video when I want to talk about a figure so when it comes to writing it out I'm going to focus on what stands out, which for me is often the negative, over what's readily apparent. Some fanbases are also just way too sensitive to criticism of something they like. It's entirely possible to find flaws with something and still enjoy it on the whole. Nothing is perfect.

I feel like the era of negative criticism for the sake of negative criticism is kind of dead. It was definitely a thriving thing back in the aughts, or maybe the algorithms know I'm not interested in it. And the YouTube shill might be dying out as well, or I'm just not watching them. Companies seem less inclined to send out samples these days either because it was an easy expense to cut when times got rough or because they've done some research that says they don't equate to better sales. Usually when I see one it's a smaller company trying to get some exposure, and most reviewers seem pretty forgiving in those settings which I don't find fault with. Not many people want to kick the little guy.
