Mattel DC Figures

I very much expect the lineups to be more:
A lister
A or B+ lister (B+ lister is the Martian Manhunter line - too big for the B-list, not big enough where you'd rely on them alone to anchor)
Corresponding villain
Team builder from A-list team (ie, JLA/JSA/Titans, not like the Metal Men)
Cult favorite or team builder from cult team

I think as a general guideline it's going to be very Marvel Legends in that way, although the trouble with DC is that there's a much smaller A-list and then a greater gulf between A and B than Marvel has. You could also roughly patch it over onto WWE Elite, which is generally Main Eventer, Main Eventer, Female Wrestler, 3 wrestlers from some mix of Midcarder/Retro Midcarder/Tag Team Member/NXT Wrestler.

So a DC Collector wave might be more like: Batman, Scarecrow, Flash, Stargirl, and Nightmaster (that one's for you, Damien!). This is wild speculation, of course, we don't even know how many figures would comprise a wave and a lot of my guesses are based on what they're doing with WWE, which has different needs. I just think at a minimum, with the requirements of retail now, we can expect 2 A-listers a wave. Even if the waves are only 4 characters, which seems distinctly possible.

My guess is Mattel is going to do exactly what Hasbro is doing with Marvel Legends: It's going to be a mix of comic, movie, animated and video game figures, with the occasional deluxe figure thrown in.

That's okay. For me, that's money saved.

I will just say: I hope BAFs are nowhere to be seen with this line. I want the focus to be on good figures and accessories. Will that kill the chance of getting characters like Ultra-Humanite for a while? Maybe, but that's a fine price to pay. We have lots of retailer exclusive deluxes nowadays, anyways.

Yeah, that's one of the questions I have - are they going to integrate media figures into standard waves like McFarlane tried early on, or have waves or even sub-lines with new SKUs specifically built around media properties? The release schedule for the upcoming movies seems like it's meant to be pretty gradual, so they could pretty easily get away with the latter, I think.

I think BAFs are pretty dead at this point for most lines. Mattel WWE only does them with the quarterly event waves, and even then it's cost-effective suited figures and referees who wouldn't be very appealing released on their own. I think some kind of Deluxe sub-line is likelier by far; they're probably not going to avoid making Swamp Thing, Clayface, Doomsday, Killer Croc, Grodd, Bane, Darkseid, etc.

This point can’t be emphasized enough. It’s a real challenge for any DC line.

Even if it was only a four figure wave with Batman, Scarecrow, Flash, and Stargirl, I would consider that a great start. The only Stargirls I have in my collection are the DCUC Stargirl and the DCC New 52 Stargirl. (Have there been any others in 1/12 (ish) scale?) I would love to get a new Stargirl from Mattel.

You had me at "Scarecrow". I guess the one fun part about starting from scratch is seeing how another company handles all your favorites. I'm sure we won't get as many versions as someone like Todd gave us, but I'm interested to see which design they choose.

I just hope they don't completely neglect some of the older or smaller properties. There's still a lot of life to be had in an Arkham subline, I think. There's still a lot of Injustice designs I'd love to have, though those are far less likely. Same with the Burtonverse and 66- a lot of cool designs from the comics that we've never gotten before. I'm sure they won't do any of these out of the gate, but I hope they don't skip entirely.

There's got to be a reason why Mattel keeps licensing a property that demands endless variations of a central hero with an almost equally popular creepy/campy lead villain played at one point by Jared Leto, but damned if I can figure out what it is.

See? We all like to fly our deep cut freak flags, but it’s not THAT hard to make us happy!

I was just thinking the other day that having the DC license “reset” so often might not be such a bad thing. TBH, I’m bored AF with Marvel Legends at this point. A lot of that is on me, not Hasbro, but that’s just where I’m at.

Arkham subline
Can I just say that I'd be down, if this ends up being a 'unified style' line, like Marvel Legends, for an Arkham games Batman where the sculptors aren't trying to replicate the weird body proportions and tiny head we get in the actual game. I really don't need that in my action figures... at all.

A little head is better than none, but to each their own!

I do generally agree, though. As nice as the existing Arkham Batman figures we have are, those little pinheads are something else. Feels like the Multiverse one is especially egregious. They've taken liberties with the suit, suit color, and other things before, so I'm cool with them doing so on the head, if it means giving him more realistic proportions. Poor guy looks like he got his head stomped by Bane but is still walking around.

Heheheh they are doing it for me.
I’ll buy Batmans and Jokers until my dying day.

Could someone who collects the Mattel wrestling stuff explain how they approach collector figures? How many waves/figures come out a year? How easy are they to obtain? What’s the character mix (A-listers vs. everyone else, themed waves or mixing of different eras, etc.)? Are the kids lines and collectors lines meant to be separate or complimentary (like some characters only come in the kids line)?
