Mattel DC Figures

I’m a huge JSA fan.

I kinda doubt we get the rumors the way we do with Todd.
It's all about who is doing the "leaking". Hasbro is a similar company and has their stuff leaked just as much as Todd's. It's mildly rare to have a surprise show up. I don't closely follow Mattel lines enough right now to know about them, but I'd expect it's about the same. The only difference with Todd is I feel like we truly get a new list leaked every single month. Hasbro is probably less often but larger all at once. Sometime we get an entire year of Hasbro stuff leaked all at one time. That's my experience with the Marvel Legends line at least.

Mattel WWE gets a reasonable amount of leaks, but they tend to come from German retailers or the Walmart system. But most stuff just gets announced way before leaks are even conceivable. The Mattel WWE team is actually super forthcoming with new product way before it's even up for preorder, but Ringside and the associated forum being such a central hub for wrestling collectors means that it's a lot easier to do that than with something as fragmented as superheroes.

Whether that has any impact on how the DC collectors' line is going to engage with fans, no way of telling that now, obviously. But the WWE team's fan outreach seems to do a lot for that line and the fanbase seems reasonably satisfied with the team's presence and the line itself. It probably also helps that there are a lot of wrestlers who are willing to do figure reveals on streams and at in-person events, which is a pretty exclusive benefit to a line based on real people.

Pixel Dan with a hands on look at MOTU Chronicles...

This may be a good idea of what we’ll see in the DC collector line, at least in terms of style and articulation. Just imagine it is Warlord, or even better Shining Knight and Winged Victory…

I like Battle Cat except for the weird geometric fins on the helmet. Much of his armor looks more organic like the original toy, then you just get these weird deflector fins on the sides of the face. If it came with a more traditional looking head armor as well I'd probably get it since the cat beneath looks great. He-Man looks decent. The face is a little too "Skaarsgard" looking, whomever the guy who plays Penniwise and the big bad French guy in the latest John Wick movie. The plastic looks a little dull, as is often the case with Mattel, but I like they gave him a decent length sword as in a lot of media He-Man is a brute and then they give him a sword that looks undersized compared to his body type.

I appreciate the shouts for Warlord and Amethyst. Always been a Grell fan, and been reading Amethyst this month after much pestering. They'd both be great for figures. Hell, I could see a MotU vs DC line in Origins featuring Warlord. That'd be an insanely good callback to the original toyline. Amethyst would also just perfectly suit there.

If we are to start with deep cuts, we really need a strong foundation shown off alongside it, and deep cuts that go in several directions to please more than one hyperspecific niche of fans. They SHOULD show off two or three waves at once anyways, they have a lot of faith to build up in the audience

It's more of a mental thing. Always hard when I disagree. Probably the opposition disorder. But I've made my peace with it.

Either way, He-Man's sword doesn't need to be massive just because he's strong. In fact, I think this sword might be a tad big, especially with how large they decided to make the... let's call it a crossguard. Doesn't BUG me, but I'd like it even more if it were like 10% smaller.

So then the question becomes “what is a deep cut”?

Main continuity superheroes like Sideways, Loose Cannon, or Shade the Changing Man?

Different genres like Amethyst, Warlord, or Jonah Hex?

Outside of the main continuity like Superman: The Dark Side, Batman from Gotham by Gaslight or New 52 Earth 2 Flash?

All valid selections. All head scratchers to the general public and even some comic fans. If Todd made ‘em, I’d be buying. Would Mattel even consider them?

I like both small and large variants of the Power Sword, just depends on what the specific art or version is going for. Either way, it's a magic sword, I think it'd be fun and sensible if it got bigger when things get more exciting.

I don't think these count as deep cuts because they're still recognizable enough as those characters. Mom and dad might not know why Batman looks like that, but they know it's Batman, if that makes sense. If anything, I think we're -more- likely to see Gotham by Gaslight Batman than we are to see even someone like Spectre.

I hate few things more than the 'it's magic, so do whatever' thing. Personal preference. She-Ra's sword polymorphs, so it makes -some- sense in continuity that He-Man's can change as well. I just personally don't like the idea. But I also dislike the idea that 'bigger sword hit better.' It's never been true in real life and so it doesn't really make sense in a magical world either.

Then again, I am known for strong sword opinions and I am very aware of that.
