McFarlane DC Multiverse

Not super familiar with Image, but how did they get to $60 for that figure? It’s Hush Batman with a new belt and head.

Guess I picked a bad time to start selling off my DC figures. Re releasing Wonder Woman knocks down the value on one of the only figures I had that was retaining it. Guess it’s my own fault for buying this many characters in a line I had gripes with.

As much as I want to offload these…it stinks to know I’m not getting close to what I paid. New figures like 89 Joker (sold out everywhere at $34.99) are available on eBay in mobs for $50 shipped. Even the resellers can’t make back cost + shipping on the popular figures.

Why do I have a feeling I’ll one day look back and see 90% of these figures in the bargain bin, but 10% of them will have insane value for being niche or short printed.

My 90’s comic journey is a little circuitous.

I grew up a Marvel guy. Slowly migrated to DC after New Teen Titans and even more so after Crisis. By 1990 I had quit Marvel entirely. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve read 50 Marvel comics in the last 35 years. I was happy with DC.

But Valiant came along, and I largely ignored it except for Magnus, Robot Fighter. I do remember Gold Key from childhood. I was intrigued, but didn’t act on it. Image came along soon after and I couldn’t ignore it. I tried all the initial Image titles from the founders. Irony being what it is, I’d ignored all these guys when they were at Marvel. That fell apart pretty quickly, style over substance left me a little disappointed. But the fuse was lit. I’d fallen away from DC for reasons I don’t quite understand to this day. I was fascinated by the different Universes like Ultraverse, Comics Greatest World from Dark Horse, and Defiant from Jim Shooter among others.

But what really got to me in the 90’s was the different imprints that represented the huge talents from that time. Mainly Legends and Bravura pulling in Mignola, Byrne, Simonson, Starlin, Chaykin, Adams, and others. Guys who were arguably more talented, but less commercially successful than the Image guys. Hellboy continues to this day and Dark Horse has a debt to Mignola that can’t be repaid in a lifetime.

Slowly much of this stuff started to dry up after the speculation bubble burst. The JSA returned, and I was ready to come back home to DC. And I haven’t looked back other than to wish I’d kept up with Hellboy over the years.

Is that really reuse? I was looking semi-closely at it before I lost interest and I was wondering......To answer the question, they get $60 out of it because fans have demonstrated time and again that they will pay whatever price is set. For example, if Todd takes a $25 figure and puts it in a bigger box with tons of empty space and prices it at $35, fans will say, "Well, I guess I have to pay $35 now", and Todd gets an extra $10 for no extra effort.

Anyway, I took a closer look at the Batmissile just now. I'm surprised/not surprised that they went with the same inaccurate canopy that they did for the Batmobile....the one everyone went out and bought a 3rd party fix for. Myself included.

My 90’s comic journey is a little circuitous.
My comic journey is as follows:

80's kid who was into the GI Joe cartoon and GI Joe action figures, had a dad who would pick me up the occasional GI Joe comic book from the magazine shop on his way home from work. That was the gateway book. The adds in that series got me curious about Spider-Man and X-Men comics.

I would then discover comic book shops. There were (and still are) more than a couple of choice locations in my area. I delved into back issues, particularly GI Joe and Uncanny X-Men filling holes and catching up on (what was at the time) a relatively easy-to-follow continuity. This was all around 1990. GI Joe was winding down, but X-Men and Todd Spider-Man was heating up.

I followed Todd McFarlane, Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld and co over to Image like a rock band groupie, just like all the other pre-teen comic fans.

Then DC did what it set out to do and hooked me with Knightfall and The Death of Superman, two storylines that I love to this day.

Down the rabbit hole I went.

Got lucky today at Target - an employee said they had the Shazam wave in the back and she came out with four figures - but not Shazam. It was the other four and I *really* need Shazam for the display I'm currently building.

Larfleeze is a really nice figure - is he an original sculpt? Love the orange.

Got Shazam and Larfleeze today. Larfleeze is no frills and pretty basic, but I doubt we'll see another of him, so it'll do. Shazam seemed like the definitive version if I wanted one so I went with him. Both are "fine." The wired cape on Shazam is nice but too small to do much with.

On to Poison Ivy and Catwoman now...

Got Larfleeze in from my Best Buy pre-order today. He's great!

My Gamestop Bloodwynd should be here tomorrow. Can't wait!

Seeing that base reminds me - anyone have any recommendations for solid flight stands for McF figs? The ones I usually use for ML aren't working well for McF male figs and even the ones like Larfleeze is on is hit or miss depending on the figure. Black Manta's can barely hold his weight, for instance.

I can’t tell if it’s PP Superman as Shinigami said above, or Red Tornado trunks/thighs/body (looking closer, I think the wrinkles on the trunks and shoulders match Red Tornado and Alan Scott) but it’s definitely the Hush Batman boots. One of 2 re-used bodies with some gauntlets, a head and belt.

Really does seem arbitrary though. $35 for that mostly new Hellboy, $60 for the mostly re-used Shadowhawk.

Jack Knight just arrived and while it’s a nice figure…reinforced my choice to sell these off. Even with the inaccurate shirt, I way prefer the DC classics head sculpt. The spiky/flowing hair on the McFarlane just doesn’t look right unless he’s in flight.

I can't personally speak for those exact ones- they may be different, but I never have much luck with those types of stands that have the screws. Even when I screw them in as tightly as they go, often times they're super loose and either can't or won't tighten any more. Out of, say, 10 stands, I get maybe half that are usable as-is; the rest I have to end up gluing in place.

I have only had one break on me, the screws suck but they do stay nice and tight. I probably have 40 figures using them currently. I have not tried many different ones, I have been burnt on stands before, but I actually prefer them to the McFarlane flight stands now.
