Marvel Cinematic Universe Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

Oooooh so conflicted!

She-Hulk is a top-tier MCU favorite of mine, and Maslany is a big reason why. Buuuuuuut obviously I totally understand why she wouldn’t want to work for Disney and I completely support her.

But, like: just recast it. Not because I’m on Disney’s side, not AT ALL, but because it’s just time to stop being so precious about “only one actor can play this character” in general.

I just read four volumes of the latest She-Hulk solo title which prompted me to rewatch some She-Hulk and then I went to the gym and finished S1 of Orphan Black on the elliptical.

That's seven different versions of Tatiana in one day!

Would hate to lose her in the MCU, especially because she nailed that character *so* well. But also yes - recast.

It would be interesting if Doomsday isn't a hit at all. Not because of her, but likely several reasons.
I think Doomsday is going to be a really good test on whether or not the MCU can still generate enough excitement to put butts in seats. On paper, this project should have people chomping at the bit. But between how fucking LONG it takes movies to come out now (therefore, lots of time for excitement to wear thin) and general MCU/superhero fatigue, I'm wondering if even the potential this film has will make anyone care.

I still don't have superhero fatigue, and part of me is excited for the movie, but I definitely have Disney fatigue and want them to fail... probably more than I'm excited for more Avengers. Also, the waning MCU figures in Legends makes me more willing to scuttle the franchise, heh.

I don't think you'll find -too much- superhero fatigue in a place like this because we're people that can surround ourselves with superheroes and read superhero comics and watch superhero cartoons every day. But I would say it's definitely settling in with the general public and more 'casual' fans of the material.

Disney I can take or leave. Generally I'm anti Disney due to the union busting, Red scarring and the white washing in the company's history. I remember 20 years or so ago on the Fwoosh being attacked for being anti Disney. Even then I respected the technical brillance of particularly their 30s and 40s films and think parts of Pinnochio, Dumbo and Fantasia are brilliant. Still I was a Warner Bros guy like I was a Marvel guy b/c you know ... those cartoons were actually funny and the characters had weight to them.

That said the current Russian funded viral campaign against Disney is total horseshit just because they suggested gay people are welcome in their space. Its sorta like when they attacked Taylor Swift b/c the camera cut to her during NFL games. I mean how dare she bring a vagina into a football space? Still; sort of an unnatural fit to be placed on the side of defending her.

This stuff isn’t Shakespeare though.
Ironically, Shakespeare is *exactly* my template for why recasting is absolutely fine.
Like how many actors have played Ophelia? Richard III? Iago? Thousands. And far from diminishing the characters, the wealth of talent and diversity from all those actors enriches the characters.

And makes them truly timeless.

I was thinking about the potential She-Hulk recast - shouldn't Tatiana be under contract? No way they signed her up just for one season of one show. She's a big enough actor playing a probably small enough part to get out of it, but at that point it's the negative publicity no one wants that will let them let her go.

I can see Doomsday being a hit, if only because people are curious for the return of RDJ, the X-Men, etc. The Avengers movies are, and will probably always be the big moneymakers, if only because it's when the most heroes come together and interact, which always gets people curious. But whether or not the movie makes people satisfied is a whole other thing. If it feels like it's gimmicky just for the sake of getting butts in seats- like if there's any point to RDJ being Doom other than just having RDJ back- then I can see people starting to finally see through the facade a bit. Infinity War and Endgame had a decade of build-up to them, whereas this one comes at the end of a bunch of disjointed movies and shows of varying qualities, not to mention a hard pivot away from their original plans. I haven't quite gotten superhero fatigue yet either, but I've also admittedly been a bit more picky with my choices, at least as far as the shows go. Still haven't gotten around to watching a bunch of them.

I wouldn't be surprised to hear that Tatiana and Oscar maaay have had something in their contracts for one season, and maybe they'd re-up them after that. It may just be coincidence, but I find it a bit interesting/amusing that of all the actors, it's the only 2 that were introduced in their own TV shows that haven't come back, and are outright refusing to come back, unless Disney gets their act together.
