G.I. Joe Head Canon & Fanfic Filecards

"There's a lot of ways to sink a battleship." Ouch.
Yeah, I almost feel bad about that one.
I love the idea of Keel-Haul, the boat commander dude, suddenly being a pilot again. It has like... Independence Day vibes, I guess.
His card talks about how he was a big swinging dick of a Navy pilot. Kind of a fun idea to have him thrown into the mix as a pilot. (I forgot he had that secondary specialty.)
LOVE Grand Slam. Immediately made me way more likely to pick up that figure when it drops. I'm a sucker for these 'I just want to be the -real- good guy' dudes.
It's funny, some of the O13 have the most creative freedom because their cards say the least, and some are really tough to find a hook for. Grand Slam was kind of in the middle but I mean... he's one of us, in the end?
Also really love Pathfinder. I mentioned in Ru's thread that, for whatever reason because it doesn't actually hit any of my usual buttons, Pathfinder was a favorite of mine. I basically treated that weird little figure like he was Rambo. Definitely feel like you did him justice here and made him feel important. Also also, this is one of those file cards that gets me all amped up because it feels like something is -about- to happen and I want like.. an entire comic book or TV show of this all going down. Right now.
I think Pathfinder whom I only VAGUELY remembered as a kid, might have just pushed me into writing up a non-file card post about the jailbreak.

Seems like Pathfinder and Muskrat are givens for the area. Would be kind of cool if a Dreadnok or two joined in.
That exact thought had crossed my mind...

THE BREAKOUT:

Official Statement by the Administration, released via press conference: The Lewis administration categorically denies that any kind of breakout or attack happened at any Florida detention facility. Security, both staff and consultants, assure us that all prisoners in our legal, official facilities are secure and that no such incident has occurred, regardless of what ... Mr. Ramirez states in his report. This Florida facility is a figment of the imaginations of those trying to sabotage the good work President Lewis is doing to restore our country to its former glory. Ensuring these dangerous individuals are not allowed to roam free remains our highest priority and our promise to the American people. We are here to keep you safe.

***

Internal Memo - Eyes Only: I want heads on pikes. President Lewis is apoplectic about this raid. He considered keeping Sgt. Hauser on ice as some kind of talisman for warding off activities by former Joes. The other escapees are of lesser importance but we cannot let it get out that anyone has escaped the facility. I want all night staff warned that anyone who says a word about this will know no peace for the rest of their lives. Also, there is no way we are paying for the PTSD treatment for Croc Master's animals - they're reptiles, not children, I don't care what he says. And what's this about... wait, who else escaped?

From "Shield of Truth with Hector Ramirez":

"Ladies and gentlemen, I'm joined today by journalist and former GI Joe member Leonard Michaels, calling in from a secure location. Mr. Michaels, good to have you on."

"Please. We're colleagues, Hector. Call me Leonard."

"Well, if we're being friendly, could I call you Scoop?"

"That might get us both in trouble, Hector. I think the U.S. military might own the trademark on our old codenames."

(Laughter)

"I suppose what I should call you is a free man. That's a new thing for you, isn't it."

"It is indeed. I've spent the last six months at a private internment facility in the Florida Everglades alongside dissidents, protesters, folks President Lewis just doesn't like - and at least one other fellow GI Joe veteran."

"I think the first thing our audience will want to know, Scoop - sorry, Leonard--"
(more laughter)

"I think they'll want to know: what crime did you commit to end up in that facility?"

"Doing the same thing you're doing, Hector. Reporting on the crimes and illegal actions of the Lewis administration. I was bagged and tagged out of my own apartment and taken in the night by men I believe were formerly Cobra Night Vipers."

"What about due process?"

"That implies what was done to me and the other prisoners there was above board and legal. I received no trial. No phone call. Certainly no Miranda rights. I know people think this can't happen in America, but it has, and it does."

"I may have misspoke earlier, Leonard. I think there is another question our viewers would want to know first. How did you get out?"

"I hate to keep secrets, Hector, but that information would put some very good, brave people in danger, so I'll have to keep that to myself. But I promise you you'll get the exclusive when I can talk about it."

"Are you saying I'd get the... Scoop?"

"Never change, Hector."

War Journal notes:

"We knew we had to get it right or we'd never see Duke or Scoop again, so Pathfinder staked out that prison for weeks, tracking patterns, documenting entrances and exits... hell, he counted the crocodiles they had in the moat just to be safe. Finally, we figured there was no more we could do to prepare - it was act or lose our shot. Pathfinder on recon. Muskrat piloting the getaway airboat. Our assault team was all volunteers from the old days: me'n Zap, Steeler, Short-Fuze. Small crew to keep it quiet. We did have one person we never would've suspected on the crew though: Monkeywrench from the Dreadnoks. Turns out some of his boys - not Dreadnoks, old school political demagogues, were being held there as well and he offered to light some fires, literally and figuratively, to help us if we'd help spring his buddies. Hey man, times like these make for strange bedfellows. Anyway, we're blowing our way through there, doors and corners. Place is crawling with ex-Cobra drawing a taxpayer funded salary now. We find Scoop easy enough, get into a real firefight to get to Duke (Scoop picked up a guard's rifle and jumped in right there with us like he wasn't wearing a prison uniform made out of recycled paper, and in the middle of all that you know who we found? Doctor Adele Burkhart. I guess if you find yourself a world-renowned nuclear physicist with an unrelenting humanitarian streak, you rescue her too, right?

"Anyway, we blow our way out of there. Monkeywrench leads his crew one way, Pathfinder peaces out back into whatever Swamp Thing cave he's been living in, and the rest of us have our teeth rattled as Muskrat gets us out of there. We stash Scoop with Gung-Ho who says he can get him to Dial-Tone so they can get to work on getting the word out and set up a conversation between Hawk and Dr. Burkhart about what she wants to do. And Duke, who looks like they've dragged him across ten miles of bad road, looks over at the rest of us with that perfect America the Beautiful row of teeth he's got and says: 'So fellas... what are we doing next?'"

This is a weird typo that I struggled to even figure out exactly what you were saying.

"Never change, Hector." Hahaha....

The War Journal is perfect. Not too much information, but evocative and punchy. And I love the team you picked. It feels very classic, but somehow also a bit out of left field consider all the potential options to add some crazier dudes in there. LOVE the inclusion of Monkeywrench, though. Man, we need more of these.

I actually went back in to fix that typo just before you posted - I had rewritten it because I wanted them denying the Florida facility existed and left a whole noun out.

The team was fun to pick because I was like: who have I established aren't doing anything other than working for Hawk, and of them, who would be happy to charge in and die rescuing their brothers in arms? (Narrator is Rock n Roll, btw.) Add to that Zap and Short Fuze being explosives-inclined to get through walls...

Monkeywrench fascinates me because he's the only Dreadnok with an IDEOLOGY. He's absolutely someone who'd bomb a building to free prisoners.

You probably could have just stopped that sentence there.

Oh yeah, I somehow only picked up on RnR being the narrator when he mentioned the other guys. I was like.. oh shit.. this is like an OG crew kind of caper.

Now we need more of these for a bunch of different events along the timeline. You're hooped now. We've basically got you chained to a typewriter for the next two years.

This just made me laugh loud enough Watson the Wonder Dog GLARED at me for waking him up.

I just had it in my head that this was the good old boys. I've got other stories for the newer characters but this one particular story felt like the OG greenshirts were made for it. I just love the idea of the two happiest O13 Joes going in with the two most asshole-angry O13 Joes. Zap smirking at RnR every time Short Fuze is bitching under his breath at everything going on.

It's funny, this was both VERY freeing but also felt scarily super freeform because I didn't have the file card guardrails. I wrote the whole thing in about 45 minutes but I'd been noodling on it for days and days. Also credit to @Ru1977 for letting me pick his brain for "what civilian might be locked up in the Florida prison that would make Rock n Roll go - oh shit, hey there, wanna come with us?"

This is so wonderful and I love what you did, and will gladly take more of that kinda stuff. I agree with Damien... What you've been giving us has been fucking great, but now you've put chocolate on it.

The opening was strong, and the interview was delightful as fuck, and the report was just GOLD. What I may love the most is fun pairings. It was true on the cartoon, the comic, and here, sometimes you get some guys teamed up that maybe you hadn't thought of how they'd be together and it's wonderful.

Man, I bet! It felt freeing to read too. The filecards are always a lot of fun, but this was a whole new kind of delight. I'm really glad you went for it. And again, Damien is right that there are definitely some other missions we already know about that could benefit from this!

Hee hee, thank you, but of course I did the scattershot method so I was bound to hit SOMEthing.

Well, I'm opening the door - I've set the scene with like 165 cards, so if you all have stuff you want something like this from, let me know. this was a lot of fun.

Though I do need to do Muskrat, Cutter, Paleo-Viper, and a named Cobra-La figure of my own creation for file cards this week too!

The opening almost felt like a warmup - I PLANNED for the press release to be the main thing, but really, the most fun I had was the fake Hector/Scoop interview. Scoop is my ex-journalist stand-in for my own belief that a good journalist can exist, and Hector I'm feeling like is the guy who became a shitty journalist to make money but in the face of fascism got his balls back and returned to his roots. Like we've been saying all along, this is a VERY IDEALIZED version of our world, though. Hector's grown on me in this thread.

What do you reckon next, the Cobra La stuff? Maybe Budo John Wicking his way across the country? I feel like I haven't given Detroit enough time lately with what Stalker's doing there.

Give yourself some credit - when you mentioned Burkhart I looked up her comic book appearances and was like holy shit, this is EXACTLY the scientist Cobra Commander would arrest. She's smart and doesn't take shit from ANYONE.

Nice. I love this format, but I'm glad the filecards are still happening. I actually think having these here and there may make the cards even more enjoyable.

Agreed. It was an appetizer.

Yeah, I love how you're handling both Scoop and Hector, and their rapport outstanding. I guess there's some of this with Monkey wrench too, but I really enjoy how this situation is forcing some of these guys to be their best selves. AND the others welcome it.

All solid ones, yes! I always come back to Shipwreck and the bunch on the boat too.

Yes! And she was really early, right? I love how Hama gave is Burkhart and Baroness right away, two awesome and badass ladies not even in toyline (yet anyway, with one... But I'll buy the shit out of Burkhart in Classified).

Oh, I WILL do the escape from San Diego. I've had that little story in mind since like the third card.

The file cards can be a bit of a sausage fest, but Larry's ladies are all absolute fucking badasses. Even Bongo the Dancing Bear has a spine of steel.
