DC Studios Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

I tried a couple but couldn't get into the style of it. I also never got into the X-Men cartoon, but did watch The Tick so I wasn't totally out of animation yet.

Art and aesthetic style, or storytelling, or all of the above?
Genuinely curious.

I also never got into the X-Men cartoon
Mmmm I kinda get this one, honestly.
I was at the magic age when both cartoons came out where BTAS felt like a gonzo neo-noir reimagining of legendary Batman lore, while X-Men was “stories I already read in the comics, just with less-cool art and more simplistic writing” and that didn’t really cook for me, although I enjoyed watching the show well enough and certainly appreciated the excuse for them to make toys. I had a similar ambivalent reaction to the 90s Spidey cartoon, although that one felt like it had tighter, more intentional design work and a better storyline.
I was also a fucking Batman *snob* in the 90s. So there is that.

Now THAT was a quality cartoon. I still think of jokes and bits all the time and laugh out loud.

“Blowhole!!! If you were a tree, what kind of tree would you be?!?!?”

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Now I need to know which episodes you watched, because I'd say that makes a difference too. The show- and Mask of the Phantasm- are all phenomenal, but like any show, there's definitely stronger episodes than others.

But I guess we're all allowed one or two wrong opinions.... ;)

I also thought the X-Men cartoon was just an OK reworking of some of the X-Men comics I was familiar with - it was fine but didn't engage me. Not sure why but Marvel Animation never clicked for me the way the Timmverse did for DC.

I liked X-Men: Evolution a bit better honestly than the main X-Men series.

If X-Men had happened a few years earlier it probably would have landed better for me but just wasn't feeling it. I liked the concept, and many years later I appreciated Earth's Mightiest Heroes doing something similar as far as reworking a ton of continuity into a few seasons, but even that one... the animation style was something I wasn't into.

I'm a really awful animation fan.

Penguin Season 2 confirmed!

"[There's] a lot more in the works: Supergirl and Clayface movies next year, sequels to Superman and The Batman in 2027, a second season of The Penguin and a true-crime series based on super-intelligent villain Gorilla Grodd."

Not a big fan of much Marvel animation myself either. Its all pretty generic and flat with little to no design sense, barely passable voice talent, and pretty bland overall vision. Basically just a safe presentable version of existing Marvel stories and characters. Timmverse and the Tick on the other hand.

This still holds generally true for most Marvel animation.
