I always viewed it as almost OCD. Trying to impose order in a world made chaotic with the loss of his parents. That is why the Joker is his arch nemesis. Batman is neurotic and compulsive; but inherently a good person.

He always seemed smaller in the show to me. More physically vulnerable.
