MAFEX Marvel Figures

Got my first tariff sticker shock yesterday. I had been delaying most shipments from Japanese retailers due to the tariffs for months, but I finally shipped an order I had been adding to from AmiAmi that included Mafex Sony Venom, Mafex No Way Home Tom Holland Spidey, Figuarts Cyclops, Figuarts Yoda, and Figuarts ROTS Obi-Wan with a shipping cost of around $80 via DHL. But apparently that wasn't tariffs included which I didn't notice, so yesterday I got a separate tariff bill from DHL for $91.

Most of me wanted to decline, but most of that list is sold out so I felt compelled to comply. Would have been more from American retailers so it is what it is.

Yikes, that $171 for shipping and tariffs would've been $30 for shipping before Trump's taxes. And this is also on top of the rising prices.

I shipped three from AmiAmi from DHL. Now I'm expecting like a $50 tariff fee. I think I may switch back to ECMS shipping then. Takes forever, but these taxes are ridiculous.

To be completely fair that’s around $170 for 5 figures not one or two. That number feels to me like it’s still in the 20% tariff surcharge range. It’s not as grossly out of proportion as your thinking . It was way worse last year when my orders processed for the X-Men AoA Cyclops and Weapon X and the final shipping plus taxes were totaled up to $270 and that’s just for two figures. No extras, no preorders no crazy expensive shipping options

Why are we paying that again?

The worst thing we can do is say "it's only X..." It's a $91 working-class tax increase.

My figures from AmiAmi shipped via DHL will be coming in the next few days, and I got the import payment request from DHL for about $75, so $25 a figure. That means, all in, each figure was about $150.

Fuck that.

A year ago, I was importing these from AmiAmi for about $80-$90 a figure.

I’ll be shipping ECMS going forward and cutting back significantly on Mafex if the US Supreme Court lets the tariffs stand. Their decision should come by June.

Most of these simply aren’t worth $150 to me. Just want to keep up on the X-Men and Hush figures in that case.

And I know this is, relatively speaking, way less horrible than all the rest of the stuff Trump and the Republicans are doing, but, gotta say, no other politician ever directly went after one of my hobbies and raised the price in a way I can directly quantify.

I wanted to complete the Jim Lee X-Men and sell off my Marvel Legends versions, but between the tariffs, the limited output (new releases), the constant delays, and the inflated prices beyond the impact of the tariffs, I’m rapidly losing interest. I don’t think I’m being facetious when I say that it could take 10 years to finish that team…if the line even lasts that long.

What exactly is ECMS exactly and what should I expect to pay for shipping/tariff on a single Mafex figure given your experience?

My AOA Cyclops and Wolverine can sit in limbo in the HobbylinkJapan warehouse. I'll probably look at BBTS for anything Mafex going forward to just do without. Not worth the hassle.

It’s a shipping service AmiAmi uses. I’ve had three orders come that way. None had any fees. They just took a while to come (3-4 weeks from payment to shipping and an additional 1-2 weeks from initial ship to delivery).

It was maybe $30 to ship an order of 2-3 figures. DHL was about $95 plus the $75 import fees for a similar sized order.

I’m okay with waiting because I’m not adding an extra $150 every time I have a Mafex order (which is most months).

I would cancel a bunch of figures I’m so-so about but I believe AmiAmi will close my account if I do so.

I just paid an Amiami invoice yesterday using ECMS. It was $40-$50 less than BBTS. All my overseas packages have been coming from HK lately. I was looking at my old emails, the last Amiami I shipped was queued for ECMS on 9/29, the carrier accepted on 10/8, and delivered on 10/14 by USPS.

I finally pulled the trigger a few weeks ago on shipping Mafex Deadpool (the red reissue), and the Age of Apocalypse versions of Weapon X and Cyclops, and the combined shipping and tariffs from Hobby Genki was around $70, which definitely hurt. I had them ship Fedex, so I paid the tariffs to them upfront, and didn't get stuck with a bill upon arrival, which I will absolutely be doing again for Rogue, Iceman, Jubilee, and Nate Grey. The Age of Apocalypse figures are incredible, though. Both huge upgrades over the Legends versions. Factor X is one of my favourite comic book runs, and this is the Cyclops I wanted back when Legends tried their hand. Incredible what a difference even just the boots make. They won't, but I'd love Mafex to try their hands at Age of Apocalypse Beast and Havok, as the Beast headsculpt from Legends wasn't the Factor X version, and nobody has even done Havok yet.

I ordered a Revoltech Harley Quinn from HobbyGenki and chose DHL because we'll be moving, and I'd rather get it faster. Guess I'll see if/what extra fees they end up hitting me with. I had forgotten a few people had mentioned that when I chose them for shipping.

Anyone know if HobbyGenki utilizes this? Sounds preferable to selling a kidney to ship myself an AOA Wolverine whose chest may or may not shatter upon arrival anyway.
