NECA 2012 Turtles

So on the first day of this year, what's everyone's verdict on the 2012 turtles.

Are they definitive enough to be my standalone squad or should I just hold out for the Sakai. I really haven't seen much discussion on these anywhere.

You’re looking to pick one set of the four bros to be the only turtles in your collection? Oh man, that’s a hard call to make because people’s tastes and ties to the property are so varied. I’ve just got Mikey and Donnie and I’m waiting to do some of the articulation mods to help them pose better (you can trim out part of the crotch piece that holds the plastron in place so you get more leg and hip movement) but I think with that done they’d be the most articulated and physically expressive within the NECA range. Also it’s likely they’ll do an accessory set with more heads later on, so more options, whereas the Sakai ones will likely be one and done I’d assume. But really it might come down to what aesthetics you like the most and how much dynamic articulation matters to you.

Yeah, I recently dumped my Mirage collection except for Splinter. I think I do. Just want four multicoloured turtles. I love the whimsy of the Sakai, but I do have a fond memory of the 2012 and I also like their unique appearance.

I'm not looking to fill out the rest of 2012, and they will be accessorized with Mirage Splinter and cartoon April. So there's no real logic to play either outside of "I think it looks neat."

These are definitely the definitive set of 2012 Turtles. But they couldn’t be the ONLY set representing the Turtles in my collection.

It’s all about the aesthetics. If 2012 is your jam then these figures will get the job done (unless you want to see Leo’s eyeballs). Those Sakai turtles will likely articulate in the same level or worse since they look pretty boxy - even by turtle standards. Personally, 2012 is a look I had to warm up to and I like it enough to want it in my collection. I adore what I’ve seen from those Sakai turtles so I’d personally side with them. They’re also pretty unique so if you like talking points in your collection they would probably provide that.
