Tracking toy tariffs

I was searching around for info and came across links to a DHL reddit

According to Hobby Genki, EMS is suspended as part of Japan Post. And with them, they're not shipping via FedEx and will only ship DHL or UPS. Not sure the reasoning there, perhaps it's simply because FedEx can't tell them what the added cost will be for them and the buyer?

Granted it was 5:30 am on Saturday but I don't recall seeing a DHL option when I paid Amiami.



I'm at work and trying not to take a deep dive into this, but it looks like this guy bought something valued at $2K and was expecting to pay a 10% tarriff, about $200, not over $700 more dollars.

I'm pretty sure one of my earlier posts here compared the couriers to the mafia.

Well I got my order from BBTS a couple weeks ago. Granted this is US to Canada, but BBTS says they will only use FedEx to ship to Canada now until the situation is more clear?? Sure Canada Post is in negotiations will their union workers but they are only limiting overtime not stopping service.

Anyway, the order was $66.50US (approx. $91.50Cdn). I got hit for $24.03Cdn from FedEx. That works out to about 26% of the purchase price. Taxes locally for me are 13% so another 13% on top for duties/brokerage/whatever. That was before the Trump 35% tariff on non-CUSMA (USMCA) goods. Still the items probably don't fall under any sort of enhanced tariffs/costs and still got dinged for almost 15% (not counting taxes).

I can only imagine what it must be like for stuff going into the US right now, and that is probably why so many companies are just saying "fuck it, let's wait and see what happens." Because why get dinged by FedEx and the other couriers, then the customer gets dinged as well for who knows how much?

I think that is exactly what is happening. Companies that can afford to wait and see are going to do so, only the ones that can't are going to try to ram their products through.

This article says that the 15% tariff rate did actually go into effect as of August 1 even though Japan's confusion over the terms of the deal led to their trade minister cancelling his trip to the US:


So as long as they work it out relatively soon that 25% rate shouldn't go into effect.

I guess I'll find out for sure when Rogue ships. I've got her pre-ordered at Hobby Search and they don't let you cancel pre-orders this close to release. They also don't do warehousing and only offer shipping services that are currently suspended so it'll be interesting to see what happens in September.

Maybe they'll just stick it on a raft and hope for the best? Like the old message in a bottle.

Sorry but some schadenfreude incoming:

I have to admit in some smug satisfaction in seeing that post about US buyers being locked out on Ebay. I can't count the number of times over the years that I was on Ebay and locked out of something I wanted to bid on because the seller wouldn't ship outside the US. The usual response was it was too much paperwork (sure). Now the worm has turned, muwahahaha.

Ok back to being (superficially) normal.

I get it though. Even living in the US, part of me is kinda "yeah, fuck em all!" Even though I'm also screwed some. I'm so anti maga that I am just as bad...

I spent much of yesterday thinking about how sad it was that MAGA finally poisoned our hobby.

If this is the pain we need to experience to dump fascism for good, it's a worthy sacrifice.

Nothing new, really, but a decent summary of hobby hell from 404 Media today.

I had a friend in Australia gloating about how the US will be locked out by the rest of the world for shipping and I was like yeah, but I've got friends in Europe who are artisans for whom 75%+ of their business is US buyers, and they're basically seeing their shops and careers die rapid deaths. I don't blame any country that locks us out, but this shit hurts... well I was going to say everyone, but it really just hurts the people who won't survive it.

This thing is a pain in the ass for our hobby, but it’s a hell of a lot worse for those who are having their careers and livelihoods upended.
