I do this same thing that you're describing for Mer-Man with Beast-Man as well. Different figures as different additional members of that "species". Honestly the same thing with Man-at-Arms as palace guards. To some degree, I could see someone doing the same with Buzz-Off, Stratos, etc.....

Still to this day, my favorite DC action figure purchase ever is the Mattel DCUC 12-pack, which I've supplemented with a handful of DC Direct LOSH figures that didn't appear in the 12-pack. My 2nd favorite DC purchases are my DC Direct Silved Age Jimmy Olsen, Perry White and Lois Lane.
