As a strategy, instead of having a random few pegs of Marvel stuff all the time and customers not knowing what is going to be available at any trip, start promoting "it's Marvel month again" and having a large display 2 or 3 waves and exclusives and box sets would be an interesting way to do it...

Lots of Lego based on what I saw in a redesigned one. Think of displays that were more like the endcaps highlighting a toyline that they do now and rotate through during the year. I didn't explore it in depth to see what was "missing" but it felt that way. I wonder if the WalMart Hasbro ML+...

I suspect that is it - I think they want to have the store look full with less in stock and look more sophisticated with smaller displays and not just aisles and rows. Parents have said this about teenagers forever I think.

The only time I have seen true "build your own from parts" work was the Droid Factory stations at Disney when they had dozens of Astromech Droid parts and you could make your own combo - either keeping with the established pairings of dome and bodies by model or just whatever color and part...
