G.I. Joe Head Canon & Fanfic Filecards

Thank you for my daily reminder of how fortunate I am to have found this message board.
I think the same thing all the time.
Ripcord has a ring touched my heart.
My little nod to what happened to her in the comics and how if these cards are from a different timeline, maybe things can turn out different here.

Yes... that was so short and sweet, just nailed it.

My little nod to what happened to her in the comics and how if these cards are from a different timeline, maybe things can turn out different here.

Awwww, man. See, I've always wondered how these fit in exactly, or when, so I appreciate that little clarification. Is that Airborne again? Or someone like Flint?

Great take on Quick Kick. I don't think I ever fully clocked that he was not officially military, but this is such a great way for him to undermine Lewis. Also loving Ripcord. That last line just feels so perfect and lived in as something a guy would absolutely say about his buddy. Really dig the idea that Ripcord is the kind of scary that even the Joes are like 'nah, but for serious, this guy is scary.'

"I heard Ripcord has a ring." Jeeeeeeeez. Nothing better happen to her, I tell you.

I don't know if they ever fully addressed it on the comics side but they literally like, pick him up off a TV commercial set or something in the cartoons, which always struck me as odd. His background almost sounds like Jackie Chan.

Ripcord is one of those characters who is so kinda... there? like there's nothing that makes him feel super unique. But his file card literally says "what he does behind enemy lines... just don't ask" or something like that and that reads as this guy's fully assassinated people. Bad Hombre.

She got such a bad end in the comics, I feel like this could be one of those Sliding Doors things where on the other side of the looking glass, things turn out differently.

So funny enough, canonically Ripcord meets Candy while he's on the run with Blowtorch and Spirit (!?!??!?!). So this commentary is totally Blowtorch, whose card I need to do soon. I'm trying to figure out how to place a fire expert into the story, but I always loved him as a figure so I want to get it just right.

Nice, thank you for clarifying! And it's fun when a commentary sorta leads into a new card. The SLiding Doors thing is really awesome, and a great way to view this whole series!

Because the universe has a sense of timing and humor, why not write up Candy's / Bongo's dad to the file card coincides with The One a Day thread, too?

Code Name: Crimson Guardsman Jones
File Name: Appel, PhD, [First Name Classified]
Primary Military Specialty: Geophysics
Secondary Military Specialty: Thermodynamics
Birthplace: Staten Island, New York
Rank: Crimson Guardsman Rank 3

The Lewis administration welcomes Professor Appel in his new role with the Department of the Interior. A world leader in the areas of geophysics, geology, and thermodynamics, Professor Appel has groundbreaking, one might even say earth-shattering ideas on how to use the Earth's own qualities to power America and the world well into the future. Originally from Staten Island, Professor Appel will spend much of his time in Washington and traveling the nation to share his wealth of knowledge with Senators, business leaders, and the American people. Privately, Appel has been a high-ranking and valuable member of the Crimson Guard for many years. His loyalty is unquestionable. That being said, his daughter been found to be consorting with members of the GI Joe unit. At this time the connection appears to be accidental, but we remain vigilant. Care must be taken if we need to eliminate Appel's daughter - we need his expertise. If the need arises, it would be in our best interest to make it appear the Joes are to blame.

"I swear if half the mad scientists Cobra attracts to their ranks turned their genius toward good, they could save the world. Instead these idiots do things like figure out how to time a thermal explosion on the bottom of the ocean to cause a new land mass to form in the Gulf of Mexico and create a sovereign Cobra nation. So no, I do not believe Appel is going to propose any great scientific advancements in the name of clean energy. Like all of his colleagues, he's going to take that egghead of his and do something to enrich his employers and make life for the rest of us miserable. Why do these guy get all the geniuses? The smartest guy we have teaches English."

Kinda fun timing these to go with Ru's one a day poll:

Code Name: Doc (II) (Disavowed)
File Name: Greer, Carla P.
Primary Military Specialty: Medical Corps Officer
Secondary Military Specialty: Chaplain's Assistant
Birthplace: Concord, Massachusetts
Rank: O-3

Subject was a very recent addition to the GI Joe Unit just prior to disbandment - she joined to follow in the footsteps of her uncle, Carl "Doc" Greer, and had just been deployed with the team when it was shut down. A medical doctor by trade, Greer has returned to her previous role as a trauma surgeon at Detroit Medical Center. While her uncle has become something of an outspoken critic of the administration, the younger Greer appears to be fully focused on her work with the hospital and is considered a low-level risk. Standard surveillance has been deployed.

"Ever see someone so mad it's funny? That was Doc when he found out his favorite niece had enlisted with the Joes. She didn't even tell him and he was heated, just showed up at a muster one day. Didn't want her out there risking her life like he was. But she says to him, I heard her say it to his face, 'you think I'm not in danger treating gunshot wounds in the ER, Uncle Carl? If you didn't want me out here saving people you shouldn't have made it look so exciting.' Damned shame she was only with us a few months before Lewis took the team apart. Of course Uncle Doc would have a myocardial infarction if he knew what she was doing right now, working with Stalker's cadre of ex-Joes out of Detroit as their medic. She sewed up Shockwave off the books when an undercover Alley Viper stabbed him in the left butt cheek. Being the best damned medic in the world just runs in the family, I guess."

Fucking. Awesome.

My aunt was a Chaplain's Assistant and that may be part of my affection for Carla. One of the most incredible hearts I've ever known.

It's funny how i always fall for the set-up on these. I read the first paragraph and get a little bummer, then read the second and get excited with a "fuck yeah!" Even my dumb "huh.... i wonder why she went to Detroit when she- ohhhhhhhhhh thats so awesome!"

Really a solid entry for a new character!

Her original file card had her working I. Detroit and I thought—once again these cards tell their own story, let’s tie her to Stalker and crew!

This one was legitimately hard to come up with, because what the hell does a flamethrower operator do if he's forced into civilian life? I always loved the action figure as a kid so I wanted to make him interesting, and I kept honing in on the elemental destruction of fire and how intimately he knows it.

Code Name:Blowtorch (Disavowed)
File Name: Hanrahan, Timothy P.
Primary Military Specialty: Infantry Special Weapons
Secondary Military Specialty: Small Arms Armorer
Birthplace: Tampa, Florida
Rank: E-4

Subject retired from the GI Joe Unit after dissolution and briefly worked as a consultant in the areas of fire safety and risk analysis, scoring lucrative contracts with several large industrial clients. Less than a year later, however, Lewis administration agents lost track of Hanrahan entirely; the man went out to lunch one day, lost his tail, and never came back. While we have not had any sightings since, it is presumed that Hanrahan must be in contact with, and potentially working alongside, the former Joes coalescing under Abernathy's command. His expertise in the combat application of incendiary devices makes him a person of interest. A warrant has been quietly issued for his arrest.

"You meet Blowtorch, you think he's just a nervous guy. He's a doors and corners type, y'know? Wants to know all the exits. Every potential risk factor. But he's not anxious - he has spent his entire career working with the most primal form of mass destruction Mother Nature ever created. Timmy has a philosophical, damned near poetic understanding of fire. If he weren't so controlled, so practiced, you might think he's some kind of firebug, but he's more like the criminal profiler tracking the serial killer when the killer is open flame. He understands destruction, and he fears it with the righteousness of a man who knows in his heart that fear is justified. So the question is: what does a man do with himself if all he knows is how to control the elemental wrath of God? We don't have a true saboteur. We don't have someone like Firefly. But we have a guy who knows the heartbeat of fire, and he's going to aim that heat at Lewis and help us burn it all down."

Another couple of great ones. Doc II has that great touch of 'I do it because of you, even though you don't want me to.' If she ever gets hurt, he's gonna feel like shiiiiiit. I still have trouble reconciling there being a 'Doc II' while 'Doc I' is still alive. That's a me problem, but it's something I'm still mulling over.

Blowtorch went in a different direction (maybe .. more poetic?) than I expected. But I say that in a good way. Risk analysis is so sideways to what he actually did and not something I would have thought of, but actually works so well and makes perfect sense. You're not getting me to buy a Blowtorch figure, though!
Probably.

If I were doing this as a long-form comic Carla would be something else, like "Stitch" or "Patch." Some classic playful nickname for a medic or surgeon. But that's also me not wanting Uncle Carl dead in this timeline yet. Maybe she'd start as Stitch and take on Doc if something happens to Carl.

Blowtorch was so hard to figure out. His OG file card says he's utterly paranoid about fire, won't sleep in a room without a smoke detector or be around people smoking cigarettes and I figured that could make him sound crazy... or maybe once you've looked into the flame you know how small you are. (My house burned down 25 years ago and I can STILL see the ball of flame that blew out the roof when they vented it.) So that might be a me thing: fire scares the FUCK out of me, but I want to express fear in poetic ways, so I projected that onto Blowtorch.
