I know this post would probably be more at home in the TV show thread, but I had a rewatch of Midnight Mass this week- one of my all-time favorite Netflix miniseries and one of, I think, Mike Flanagan's best. I hadn't watched it in a year or so, but MAN did it hit differently this time with everything going on- watching everyone just blindly follow a stranger because he talks pretty and seems to be doing magic in front of their eyes. I loved it before for its well-written themes and clever subversion of old tropes; I'd already seen the horror element to it (it's certainly more of a religious horror show than anything else), but this time it felt twice as scary because, aside from the fantastical elements, we're basically seeing this play out in the real world right now. I think Flanagan really managed to nail that cult mentality of slowly starting to do horrible things and not even questioning it, just because it can kinda loosely be traced back to scripture; there truly is a Bible verse for everything if you look hard enough and twist meaning hard enough. And not to spoil anything for anyone who hasn't seen it, but in the end, when some folks start to realize what they've done, it hit all the harder. I can only hope we have one of those collective moments; I just hope it isn't too late like in the show. I also look forward to the moment when the most evil one of all has the most cowardly reaction to meeting their fate. But all it takes is a small group of people, those who've been "othered", being willing to step up and away from the masses to put an end to things. We've obviously seen people in our world are willing to step up and have their voices heard, but now it's time to put those words to work.

Two things:

First, oh my *GOD*, y'all, please go watch Midnight Mass. Drop everything and go watch it. I cried like a baby my first watch-through when Riley discussed his thoughts on death. I've watched it thrice through since then, and I still cry at that scene. Few things have ever spoken to me more on an existential level.

Second, I don't know how many people follow legal happenings in the country, and it makes sense given the sheer fucking VOLUME of happenings. But this text exchange between the prosecutor doing Trump's bidding on the James indictment and a reporter for Lawfare is *jaw dropping*. Absolutely mind-boggling. The lunacy and sheer ineptitude is just...it's just. Talk about a "lawyer" who clearly coasted through on looks:

I mean, for real:

"
At 4:10 p.m., she texted me: “By the way—everything I ever sent you is off record. You’re not a journalist so it’s weird saying that but just letting you know.”

I responded: “I’m sorry, but that’s not how this works. You don’t get to say that in retrospect.”

Halligan was unpersuaded: “Yes, I do. Off record.”

“I am really sorry. I would have been happy to speak with you on an off the record basis had you asked,” I said. “But you didn’t ask, and I still haven’t agreed to speak on that basis. Do you have any further comment for the story?

To my surprise, she kept going: “It’s obvious the whole convo is off record. There’s disappearing messages and it’s on signal. What is your story? You never told me about a story.”

I didn’t respond. It was time to publish my story. I’ll text it to her."

That is the most beautiful monologue ever given on TV.

@canprime I would love a revival of Newsroom.
I can't even imagine what that would be like today. (Only half joking here) A show that splits time between Legacy media and their utter failings in today's age (along with the sinister propaganda machinations) versus independent media online?

I'm just glad I don't have to write it.

I have a hard time watching the Newsroom because I was a newspaper reporter for over a decade, watched papers all get swallowed up by private equity and venture capital scumbags, laden with debt and turned into propaganda machines, and every good reporter I know has been driven out by a combination of unethical ownership and catastrophically terrible pay. I'll always consider myself a journalist, but that industry stood there and let finance bros hang it by the balls until it died. I don't blame the reporters who left. Hell in a lot of ways I blame the readers because if you weren't telling the story they wanted to hear they wouldn't buy the paper which is why organizations like Fox are so powerful. Nobody wanted the news, they wanted a fucking binkie to suck on and tell them they're right. And then once the full finance / tech bro takeover finished its job like late-stage cancer there was no one left with a spine in the entire fucking industry.

Frankly, I'm fucking tired of watching the same fucking people fuck every decent thing in this world to death like chimpanzee deep dicking a cat corpse into paste, and good journalism is just one of the things we lost.
