I was saying earlier today Republicans have always been like this, but 20, 30 years ago the party would've disavowed them, got all those losers jobs at Bain or McKinsey so they can be rich and fuck people over professionally, and just swept them out of politics publicly. But today we have the VP of the United States defending them with the "I know you are but what am I" defense. It's the same Nazi-worshiping cumstains, they just don't have the shame to go take a seven-figure contracting job and go away when they get found out.

This is what I'm always wondering. Is it always like this, was I just unaware and in a bubble. And I get varying answers but I think those people were also just drinking the Kool-Aid when they say no it wasn't.

I saw somebody on FB yesterday saying that when Obama was elected his friend said 'now we can move past all this racism', then he was listening to Rush Limbaugh that night and Rush said 'no, now it will only get worse'. He was so happy that Rush was right ('as always', he said).

He was right, that's US History in a nutshell. We didn't go from Reconstruction to Jim Crow or from Obama to Trump by accident. It's part of the fabric of the country's identity. With all of the talk about the rise of neo nazism there is barely ever any acknowledgement that the Third Reich was directly inspired by the Jim Crow southern US. It all comes full circle. White Americans have a...particular pathology that has never been properly addressed and we're living through the result of that.

I always love the It's Kids talk, taking this back to racism. My entire life, a 16-17 year old black or Hispanic teen (definition) shoplifts or gets in a fight, it's a Legal Adult, Grown Man. But four white 25+ men premeditate and fail armed robbery (this was years ago in Milwaukee but pick your news article of choice), and they're just kids. They don't know what they're doing. They're just kids, peer pressure, brain isn't developed, yada yada.

Because those leaked chats are full ass adults. I can't fault them, though, it's hard to have accountability when the most powerful people in the country don't have to.

I think it's also just that people have gotten a lot bolder since some of the most powerful people in the northern end of North America are just outwardly saying the most vile shit now. If you're a white dude that's fairly 'normal-presenting' or whatever, you are very likely to have people just say things to you assuming you're on their side.

I genuinely believe people are right who say that the mind virus of the Republicans has been EFFECTIVE at making their base believe that 'actually, everyone agrees with us and they're just afraid to say it.' They really do think you're, maybe secretly, on their side when they make their racist or sexist comment. Of COURSE you're on their side. 'We are the silent majority.' By definition, that should mean most people they meet feel the same way they do.

I am a fucking IMMIGRANT and people will openly tell me how much they hate immigrants. Worse, when I point out that I am an immigrant, the response is almost always 'you know what I mean.' Yes, I do know what they mean.
