U.S. Politics

Kimmel can get back to work if he apologizes and donates to Kirk's family. I'm still not clear for what. The butt of his joke was maga people. Either way, don't do it Jimmy.

I don't actually think it'll matter because rich people are fucking morons, but Disney shooting itself in the dick on auto might be the clearest indicator that people are done with Trump's shit. If you get Disney Adults, who have made Disney their entire personalities, to cancel enough stuff to tank one of the most reliable stocks in history, some dumbfuck in the board room in every major business in the country has got to be logical enough to realize you don't have an economy if you don't have people to buy shit, and Trump wants a country without consumers. Meta and Google might be too fucking dumb to figure it out but Disney has got to realize the public will punish them for capitulation. I swear the only reason we didn't see something similar with Colbert is Paramount Plus doesn't have the numbers for it to matter.

(of course these are the same fucking idiots who gave people like Trump enough power to ruin them, so we won't actually fix anything but maybe they'll know who to blame when the proverbial axe falls on them too.)

oh yes complain she is "costing tax payers money" while completely ignoring the fact her sons & grandchildren are TAX PAYERS plus she herself paying taxes

so who is going to fill all these vacancies? no one ... not like he cares about the economy

I haven't branched out in conversations for a while here and I'm kinda wondering where all my 'soft/centrist' conservatives are at with all this. The ones that just 'aren't sure who is right/honest' but tend to skew conservative. Those types typically value themselves as reasonable and intelligent. Would LOVE to hear their thoughts on all this democracy-destroying bullshit going on.

Yeah, I keep wondering what the breaking point is, but I think this is just proving how many centrists were just extremists with good manners.

So I've always known the neighbor behind me was a MAGA guy, but I've kept it cordial since we share a property line. Just had to nuke him on socials today though because I was jawing about not wanting government censorship over television shows and he, who NEVER engages with me politically, said it was about listening to the Disney customers who wanted Kimmel gone. "I own Disney stock, I'm not worried, it'll be higher in a year." This is a white guy, retired at 52, owns multiple properties (retired to become a professional landlord), two beautiful kids in college, three fast cars and a 90,000 pickup and a motorcycle, and he's all in for a fascist America. It is ALWAYS the guys who have everything they want to don't want anyone else to be free, ever since the dawn of mankind.

Anyway, now I can't talk to the neighbor behind me and the neighbor on the right side of me has windows that are melting my house and won't help me do anything about it, so I now have only one neighbor I'm not in a feud with and I deeply regret not buying that cottage in Galway and never coming back to America back in 2011.

The center right is the far right. Even making a distinction at this point is another thing that makes me worry that we've learned nothing.
But 80 years is not a long time in the grand scheme of history. A better way to put it is that it ONLY took 80 years for GERMANY to bring back its Nazis. If FUCKING GERMANY, where most Nazi bullshit is straight up illegal, can fall this far back in less than a century, we may be well and truly fucked.
I'd make a small distinction between the center right and the far right in a parliamentary system. In this country, the psychos and the Low Tax Brigade were forced to share the same tent. When right-wing media and the internet really took off, the psychos took over. Now there are no moderate conservatives in the U.S.

As we've seen in Israel, the far-right can benefit from a parliamentary system, but it's not the norm.
North Korea is another absolutely wonderful example of what a cult of personality can do.
I think we can both agree that North Korea is significantly further down the road than we are. They have consolidated state media; open brainwashing. Trump is in the process of building that as we speak.
Everyone keeps saying Trump's cult of personality dies with him because he's the only one with charisma (which is such a gross way to put it because he's as charismatic as rusty nails shoved into your dickhole). That's bullshit.
This is where I really disagree. In 2015, Trump was funny. I didn't laugh because his shit was all punching down, but he had stage presence. He was willing to laugh at Marco Rubio's dick size to his face. On a stage with 16 or whatever other candidates, he stood out. Between that and The Apprentice, a show designed to make Donald Trump look like America's Smart Business Boy, he built his cult.

It's also worth remembering the context around Trump 2016. We were coming off our first Black president, an insult that sent conservatives into an all-consuming rage. His special formula of Racism Pixie Dust was the icing on the cake. That particular brand of charisma doesn't jive with anyone in this thread, but it was catnip to a certain segment of the American populace.

He was rich (aspirational), racist (just like them), and able to say or do whatever he wanted without consequence (aspirational). Here we are.
Kim Il Sung was charismatic and developed a cult of personality. His son, Jong Il, and grandson, Jong Un, were/are subhuman little monsters with the force of personality of a dead cockroach floating in spoiled milk. It just doesn't MATTER anymore. It's crazy to think there is no chance that it won't matter to MAGA either.
I'm not so sure. Like 2025 Trump, everything Vance, Don Jr., whoever says is a whiny grievance. That's cool when you're coming out of 2024, the hottest American economy in recent memory, but not so cool in 2028 after Don Sr. has shanked the American economy and kneecapped American science.

Maybe this is all hopium. A lot of what I post here is.
some dumbfuck in the board room in every major business in the country has got to be logical enough to realize you don't have an economy if you don't have people to buy shit
Yup. We need to teach them to fear liberal consumers the same way they do a vocal minority of conservatives. Target is feeling it. Democrats are furious and need somewhere to channel their energy. I'm betting this legitimately hurts Disney.
so who is going to fill all these vacancies? no one ... not like he cares about the economy
Well,

I wonder if we'll see a further spike of cancellations Weds morning after the season finale of Alien: Earth.

It's mind-blowing how tone deaf the Disney decision is given that their most popular shows the past few years have been politically the opposite of this. Andor, Daredevil, Alien, all VERY anti-whateverthefuck we call what's happening now.

Respectfully... naaaah.

The Right-Winger dipshits that won in Germany are literally called The Christian Democratic Union. They're theocrat fascists. They're just like.. theocrat fascists in the George W. sense instead of the MAGA sense; the theocrat fascists that are still smart enough and scared enough to dogwhistle, lie, and misdirect rather than just say what they want.

But let's not fuck around with their policies: tax cuts for businesses, limited immigration, deportation of 'illegals,' 'third country' holding areas for asylum seekers, massively enhanced presence of and funding for law enforcement (including surveillance of the population and closing religious institutions that it deems problematic - particularly those that it sees as anti-Israel), mandatory military service for citizens, hates China, loves Israel. ~takes a deep breath~ They're also WHOLLY and ENTIRELY against all emissions controls and legislation against automotive pollution, is pro-emissions trading, and wants to bring back diesel subsidies. They want language barrier tests for children to be in public school (i.e. anti-immigrant measures).
Then when you look deeper at the like.. 3 things that maybe they are good on, you find that it's either couched in other awful things, or is just probably shit they don't really mean and won't actually do (like Trump promising lower grocery prices).

In other words, to literally the surprise of fucking nobody, the CHRISTIAN Democratic Union right-wing Germans are just MAGA without an orangutan to shout into a mic for them. They are absolutely, 100%, far right theocrat fascist idealogues.

I think we can both agree that North Korea is significantly further down the road than we are. They have consolidated state media; open brainwashing. Trump is in the process of building that as we speak.
The point I was making is that North Korea didn't start out where they are now. We are on exactly the same trajectory they were on to get where they are. We have to stop pretending 'it just can't happen here.' It absolutely can. We've watched it happen elsewhere and have, apparently, learned nothing. Mostly because of this bullshit American Exceptionalism that taught us that we are somehow intrinsically, inherently different from everyone else on earth.

This is where I really disagree. In 2015, Trump was funny. I didn't laugh because his shit was all punching down, but he had stage presence. The second two points bely the first. Trump didn't have to be charismatic to win. He just had to say the right horrible things and hate all the correct people. Which is exactly what he did. He was a dumb, ignorant, loud piece of shit. ALWAYS. Everyone just ignored it because he was rich and powerful. But I don't believe for a second he was ever -charismatic-. Or funny in any meaningful sense beyond 'horrible people will laugh if you say the N word.'

Jong Un is a whiny pathetic little bitch. Just like Vance and Don Jr. It just doesn't matter once the deification of the original leader is allowed. Then everyone who follows becomes untouchable. We're seeing that kind of attitude already manifesting in large scale with the Charlie Kirk situation. You think those same people won't rally behind everyone closely aligned with Trump if Trump were to die? I envy your optimism. Don Jr. will be the new Christ if Trump kicks it right now. There will be Republican pundits seriously publicly commenting that he should be just MADE the president, without elections, to honor the 'sacrifices' his father made to 'Make America Great Again.' I guarantee it. We are becoming North Korea and not doing nearly enough to stop it, it seems like.
