DC Studios Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

So James Gunn has said there will be 4 movies in the "Superman Saga".

Superman, Supergirl, Man of Tomorrow and ... ?

I personally am hoping for a World's Finest movie.

I have no idea why I love team up stories so much but I have ever since I was a little, little boy back in the 60's. There was just something about comics like World's Finest, Brave and the Bold, Justice League and Avengers that thrilled me as soon as I saw them on the spinner rack.

I guess maybe one of the reasons was it seemed like a bargain. You could buy an issue of Action Comics and Detective Comics for 12 cents each. That would cost you almost a quarter. Or you could just buy an issue of World's Finest with Superman and Batman together for 12 cents. Believe me, when you were six years old and funds were limited, that 12 cent savings was a big deal.

But I think more it was just the world building aspect of it. It was cool to me that all these characters existed in the same universe. Superman hanging out in the batcave, Jimmy Olsen and Robin teaming up, Supergirl and Batgirl causing mischief, Luthor and the Joker plotting deviltry. There were some pretty interesting dynamics there. You couldn't get that if Superman and Batman both existed in their own little worlds.

Shared universes is what makes DC and Marvel so great in my opinion. Without that there'd be no Avengers Endgame. Hell, there'd be no Avengers. Just solo Iron Man, Hulk, Thor and Captain America movies. Yes, they would still be cool but the fact that they could all get together in one movie makes them so much cooler.

Just like in the comics.

I don’t need Lex to keep being the “main” villain each outing, but at this point I don’t want the films to be without him. He’s just too good.

Yep. Totally agree.

Lex should be in every movie as a master schemer, but Superman has got some cool villains and they're overdue for some live action big screen love. Cyborg Superman, Metallo, Livewire, Ultra-Humanite, Parasite, Mongul and Kryptonite Man, to name a few. And a Luthor/Brainiac team up would be classic.

Let's save the Composite Superman for a World's Finest movie. That's a character that James Gunn could have a lot of fun with.

I don't need Lex in each movie the same way I don't need Joker in every movie. At some point it neuters any "defeat" in the prior films. I like the idea that maybe Lex is needed to deal with some bigger threat like Brainiac and you can't tell if he can be trusted. One the biggest issues with Supes is finding a villain that can keep up with him physically, because then it falls into a big fight, and if they can't keep up, it is like why not just knock him out. Ultimately this is why the very first Superman worked so well, he didn't have a physically powerful enemy....made it more of a challenge.

I sort of wish in hindsight that the idea of him being sent to "rule" Earth was saved for a later film. I felt they could have built enough distrust in Supes just by going against the Government policy of non-intervention in Boravia and therefore a more nuanced "he's great but is he on our side" take and Lex trying to undermine his reputation on other ways. Then once he is fully worshipped as a hero in a later film, maybe go back to Zod again but this time have Supes welcome him at first, and then have the whole idea of "could I, Superman, be the benevolent dictator" come into play. There is an interesting story there, of Superman being tempted by what Bruce Wayne might do if he had unlimited power to "fix" things.

. . . like housing everyone, giving everyone jobs and access to mental health care?
🤷‍♂️

Lex doesn't have to be in every Superman movie, but I should know where he is in every movie. That said, I'm good with him being a big player in the sequel.

Re: “big” villains appearing in multiple films, I like Matt Reeves’ approach where most everyone is “around” and seen, but the focus is not always on, say, the Joker, but yes we the audience do “check in” on him.
I consider guys like Lex and the major Batman villains to be full-on supporting characters in the overall story, and I want to see them every time.
Also Lex was clearly the breakout (human) performance in the film, and he’s earned our time.

I hope Gunn's careful about rehabilitating Luthor. He was pitch-perfect as an egomaniacal billionaire; I don't need him getting a redemption arc.

I liked the implications of (I think) Frank Miller's take on the character, that if Batman had superstrength and could fly and was near invincible, he might lean towards more of a "I'm in charge now" mindset. Even more so than your thoughts about Tony in the MCU. Batman may not kill, and may have the right attitude towards mental health, but what if he was the most powerful person on the planet? Byrne was also interested in this, that Batman might feel he is limited in what he can do, but Superman less so.
