General Marvel Legends

Don't feel bad. If I were to share my true feelings on Bill Sienkiewicz's art I would probably be run off these forums.

I never liked him, but I've also never liked Picasso and they have vaguely similar expressionistic styles. I respect both of those artists, but I like neither of them.

And we're in the majority on that, but that's not me suggesting the majority is correct. Very often it isn't, and knowing that is why I respect those guys. I see the artistry in the style they're going for even if it doesn't appeal to my own tastes.

That's kind of where I am. I don't deny that he is a talented artist. It just doesn't work as comic art for me.

I love most of the 90s big name X-artists, but for me, while I like Mark Texeira and Barry Windsor Smith's Wolverine, there is no better Wolverine artist (at least to me) than Dwayne Turner. His chaotic mutant midget in a perpetually destroyed costume in the #70s issues of Wolverine's stand alone title was pure excitement for me as a kid. I would love nothing more than a battle damaged 90s Wolverine figure that reflected this.
I absolutely love Barry Windsor-Smith. I absolutely love Weapon X (looking forward to the upcoming Legend!), and not to be too on the nose for me, but he plotted and drew my favorite issue of Iron Man ever written as well:

A selection of panels of non-spoilery panels I love:

Which issue is that? I'm down for some BWS Iron Man.

I like Sienkiewicz art but he is mostly just a Neil Adams clone with a veneer of Ralph Steadman over the top. Toss in a little late 80s fine art mixed media.

Alright, here's my top 6 X-Men artists. Yeah, just picking my top 6 is hard enough. 5 wasn't possible.

John Cassaday
Jim Lee
Paul Smith
John Byrne
Dave Cockrum
Chris Bachalo

Paul Smith is the top of my list, especially as I get older. Just pure meat and potatoes good storytelling. Does the work and gets out of the way. He's not as flashy as some, but I think he's pound for pound one of the best.
As a kid I had that Wizard 30th X-Men mag, and when they covered the best artists, Smith's praise was: "no line was wasted".

And I always carry that with me when I'm working out my own art. Phenomenal storyteller for the medium.
