DC Studios Movies and Streaming Series Discussion

DC Comics first began life as National Allied Publications in 1934. The very first comic book they published was New Fun: The Big Comic Magazine #1 in February 1935. National officially changed their name to DC Comics (Detective Comics) in 1937.

Superman, their first superhero, first appeared in Action Comics #1 in June 1938.

Adventures of Captain Marvel holds the distinction of being the first superhero film adaptation ever. It was released in 1941 by Republic Pictures as a 12-chapter serial.

Superman and the Mole Men, released in 1951, holds the distinction of being the first feature-length film based on a DC Comics character.
The first DC Comics-based television show was The Adventures of Superman, which aired from 1952 to 1958.

The first DC character to make the transition to animation was ... you guessed it ... Superman on September 26th, 1941. Fleischer Studios produced 17 shorts featuring the Man of Steel between 1941 and 1943.

See a pattern here? The first superhero to appear in a comic book, a live action movie, a live action TV show and a cartoon. It always seems to come down to that big red S.

In 1967, DC Comics was acquired lock, stock and barrel by Warner Brothers. And the WB has held the purse strings ever since.

This thread is for you folks. You can talk about anything DC here. Live action TV, feature films, cartoons, comics, video games, I don't care. Knock yourselves out. And it doesn't necessarily have to be produced by DC Studios. Any DC project, any year. From the very beginning in the Golden Age to now.

A little later, I'll create a list of what DC Studios has in the works. We can use it as a reference guide.

Have fun!

Soooooo excited for Gunn’s Superman.

I feel like Goldilocks regarding superheroic cinematic universes: the MCU (at least the Infinity Saga) had too many mean put-down “quips” from supposed heroes and jocks-playing-grabass “humor” for me to truly love it (also they blew it with most of their villains), and the DCEU was closer to my personal aesthetic and tone but ultimately was just too scattered and never really formed into something cohesive.

I’m hoping the DCU is “just right”.

Took my son to see Minecraft today and the trailer for Superman played. That was the first I’d seen more than the teaser. Very hopeful for the Gunn led DC cinematic universe.

Wishlists are like Thanos. They are ... inevitable.

Nobody asked, but here it is anyway.

SD's DC STUDIOS WISHLIST
1) The Legion of Super-Heroes

A Legion live action movie or TV series would be hella expensive to produce and perhaps too ambitious, but maybe as an animated series? Either way, I want one.

2) Deadman

Whatta great concept. A ghost, who can't be seen or heard by anyone, tries to solve his own murder. A Max show would be wonderful.

3) Swamp Thing

Len Wein, Bernie Wrightson, Alan Moore, Stephen Bissette, John Totleben, Rick Veitch, Mark Millar .... Swamp Thing is one of those crazy cool characters that just seems to bring out the best in whoever works on him. I don't think you can do him justice in a two hour movie, though. It would almost have to be a series.

(And I know it was announced as a movie with James Mangold attached to direct. I really hope that happens. Mangold is a great director. I loved Logan. And he seems to have a lot of reverence for Swamp Thing. The problem is James seems to have a lot on his plate right now. Hopefully someone can get it done.)

4) Animal Man

Grant Morrison's Animal Man was one of the best comics to come out of the 1980's. It really was breathtaking. I want a movie.

5) New Gods

Kirby. More you need to know?

6) Sgt Rock

This is apparently already in the works with Colin Farrell attached to star, and you can't imagine how terribly happy that makes me. When I was a young'un, I loved the super guys but I also had a soft spot for DC's war books. Enemy Ace, Haunted Tank, Unknown Soldier and the Losers. Bring'em all on, I say. Rock was the best of the lot, especially with Joe Kubert doing the penciling. I never had the pleasure of meeting Joe in person, but I truly wish I had. What a fantastic artist.

7) Adam Strange

With Silver Age DC, superheroes, war and science fiction ruled the day. Adam Strange is DC's answer to Flash Gordon, a present day character who can travel by Zeta Beam to the planet Rann.

8) Rip Hunter

Speaking of Silver Age and Sci-Fi, who doesn't love a good time travel story? This would be a great series.

9) The Justice Society of America

I've been head over heels in love with this concept for 60 years. All-Star was my father's favorite comic when he was a little boy and he passed his love for this group on to me.

Ideally, the story should span the generations, from the darkest days of World War Two to the present day. What an awesome way to showcase DC's amazing 90 year legacy.

10) The Justice League of America

Someday, before I shuffle off this mortal coil, I want to see a truly great movie called Justice League. Zack Snyder's cut was good, if a little too ambitious. We won't talk about the theatrical version.

I want to see the glory and grandeur of the Silver Age, with the imagination of Grant Morrison. James Gunn appears to be heading in a JLI direction, which I understand. I liked JLI, I thought it was cute and funny and that concept is in Gunn's wheelhouse.

But man. Give me the big guns, the icons, the superstars ... with epic scope that spans several movies. A saga, if you will. I want a Justiice League movie every bit as great as that first Avengers movie.

Okay, that's it for now. But there are so many more. Metamorpho, Plastic Man, Kamandi, The Doom Patrol, Starman, Nightwing, Teen Titans, Birds of Prey, Green Arrow, Blackhawks, Metal Men, Hellblazer, The Outsiders, The Spectre, Black Orchid ... I could go on all night. But I'll spare you.

Assuming people go back to the movies again and this franchise takes off, what do YOU hope to see in the DCU?

We've already seen Sgt Rock in this universe! He was in flashbacks in Creature Commandos.

I want a great many things from DCU, but you know what I want most?

AN ACTUAL TEAM OF SUPERVILLAINS.

Bruh we got the Thunderbolts before the Masters of Evil, Suicide Squad before the Legion of Doom or the Secret Society of Supervillains OR the Injustice Gang. It is waaaaay past time for a team of heroes to have to fight an actual supervillain team.

And just . . . villains in general. I miss the “old days” of superhero movies where the villain was the big draw (and usually played by the “big actors”).
I’m soooooo tired of “heroes” slinging insults at each other and generally being dicks. Let the VILLAINS be the villains.

Assuming people go back to the movies again and this franchise takes off, what do YOU hope to see in the DCU?
I'd love to see everything you mentioned. Imagine a big budget, period All-Star Squadron movie that led into a modern day legacy-centric JSA movie/franchise. That would be terrific.

AN ACTUAL TEAM OF SUPERVILLAINS.

I hear that.

Besides the Injustice Society, I'd love The Legion of Super-Villains, The Secret Society of Super-Villains, The Secret Six and others I'm forgetting.

On the Marvel side, I hope that the Frightful Four and the Sinister Six show up at some point.
