G.I. Joe Classified Series

@docsilence I really appreciate that. Only if you think it will help. I feel pretty convinced they won't work by each other and I'd definitely want them together and looking uniform.

Just a quick shot, one with flash one natural light. The solo ones match up better than I thought. The three pack ones look a been darker/weathered.

@docsilence thank you so much! Damn, where my display is, it's kinda dimmish so that first picture has me rethinking, but that the second one is pretty damned clear about the differences.
I'd say it just depends on what you're going for and how many you have. If you really just want -more- Vipers to add to a uniform display, I really do think these guys will stand out. If you want someone to hang out with your Vipers and look like he belongs, but be a distinct character or specialty? The new Retro works fine. I'm kind of liking the idea that Retro Vipers are regular Vipers and 3-pack Vipers are 'night operations' Vipers thanks to their more subdued colors and lack of exposed skin.

If you're adding like.. one or two Retros to a group of 10 regular Vipers - make the Retros the heavy gunners, or grenadiers. Or maybe Retro Vipers are part of the armoured division and accompany the HISS everywhere. Or maybe they're groundcrew guardsmen for the Rattler. Or vice versa if you plan to have more Retros than regulars.

That is all to say that I do think there's a lot of opportunity here to enjoy both figures equally, you just may have to head-canon it so you don't go crazy constantly noticing the differences between the figures.

Do you guys have a preference between cardback and boxed releases? I much prefer opening the boxes, personally I keep them all in nice shape and line them up on the wall in my garage (the side art is so fun). But the cardbacks, not so much, I just rip into them like a savage and throw them away.

I keep the boxes for Classified so it is nice to have them both as accessory storage, and display when a figure is not on display. So far I have only opened Retro Destro because I snagged a couple for cheap. Otherwise all my other Retro releases are still sealed on card (well the ones I only have one of.....Scarlett is next to get opened).

That is, mostly, my modus operandi if I have two, or more, of a figure/vehicle I will open up the packaging (and toss it) while keeping one boxed/carded. However that isn't as often as you would think because I usually only buy multiples on sale/clearance. Which is why I have 3 TF Duke w/RAM.

I would love for more toylines to release art books of their packaging art like Mattel/Dark Horse did for Masterverse/Origins. I love toy art and always have (vintage TMNT, Joe, and MOTU all had fantastic art that is now, of course, immensely nostalgic) but I literally have nowhere to store that much cardboard just for the sake of being able to look at it sometimes.

I always wished the Joe team would have been able to get an art book done for Classified (before it switched to a single artist). They had some really great art for individual figures. Plus it was nice to see them giving different artists a chance to offer up their interpretation of characters.

@Damien thank you, and damn you a bit, but yeah I wanted the retro as an officer or what have you. A Sergeant maybe, but want his different vest and holster placement to stand out more than the colors.

I don't have the space to keep boxes, so I end up photographing figures unopened and then recycling most of them. I HAVE saved flattened Joe boxes for now but I'm going to actually cut the numbered side out next time I've got room on my recycling and get rid of the rest to clear up space. I keep meaning to just razor off each number because they don't take up nearly as much room.

If I could remove the card back cleanly I'd like those better, especially with the file cards on the back, but it's so tough to actually peel the thing apart in a way that looks nice after opening.

I liked the original boxes where every character had bespoke work and the artist had a purpose. Noto on Scarlett, Veregge on Spirit. That was beautiful and worth keeping. I used to keep it, but purged all but a handful.

The new render probably AI stuff is for the streets, I toss those.

For the opening experience, I prefer the Retro cards. Less plastic, easy to rip in. I also like opening them carefully with a blade to keep the sealed look. I use a skinning knife or KA-BAR tip and run it into the gap on the bubble, then around both sides to slide the tray out.

I do find I will occasionally buy an extra of somebody purely because of the Retro packaging and I was never an inbox collector before. But I like having Scarlett, Baroness, Snake Eyes, and Commander on my wall.

I prefer the Marvel retro for the same reasons.
